The abbey church of Vigeois is one of the most precious examples of Romanesque art and architecture in the Lower Limousin. Built between 1082 and 1121, this monument lived through the hardships of the medieval period (looting, attacks and fires). The monastery?s history is documented in the precious chronicles written by the monk Geoffroy de Breuil, prior of Vigeois, from 1170 to 1184. Several attacks resulted in the complete disappearance of the nave, which was rebuilt in a neo-Romanesque style between 1866 and 1868. The building was listed as a Monument Historique on July 12, 1886.
