From Port de Balès, take the path 50 m before you reach the pass, which will take you to Port de Pierrefitte via a track and then to Lac de Bordères via a footpath. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious nature reserve. Sporty option: From Bourg d'Oueil, follow the GRP signs (red and yellow) to reach Port de Pierrefitte. The elevation gain is 535 metres.

Road closed from 30/11 to 15/04, trail inaccessible. A beautiful hike starting from Port de Balès. You will pass by Lake Bordères and then climb to Pic du Lion, the highlight of the day. This route will allow you to explore the GR de Pays Oueil-Larboust, a 43 km long trail. From Port de Balès, take the trail 50 m before the pass, which will take you to Port de Pierrefitte via a track and then to Lake Bordères via a trail. At the lake, follow the trail climbing up to the left, marked in yellow and red (beware of herds with Patou dogs). Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious reserve.

The paths of freedom are routes that were used by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: resistance fighters, Allied pilots, Jews and those refusing to participate in the STO (compulsory work service). By attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the Nazis who threatened their very existence. Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" invite you to discover the first part of this route, from the Col de Balès to Portet de Luchon. This hike is suitable for families with good walking shoes. The elevation gain is 547 m, but the route is mostly downhill with a total descent of over 1,000 m. By taking this route via the Col de Balès, you will be following in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the Françoise resistance network, one of the first to help and involved in the escape of at least 700 people. Like André Bon, who made it to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees. A dangerous and demanding human adventure, this gruelling journey cost the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or Nazi troops. You who walk in the footsteps of these shadow fighters, escapees, smugglers, networks of helpers, anonymous people who contributed to the rescues and many of whom never returned... Do not forget them. Mont Né is an accessible peak from which you can admire the peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées, including the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, the 3,000-metre peaks of the Luchonnais, the Aneto and the peaks of Ariège! All this with only 400 metres of elevation gain. From the Port de Balès, take the path 50 metres before it, which will lead you to the Port de Pierrefitte, then the path climbs up on your right. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious reserve.

The climb up the Portillon Pass through the pine trees will not leave you indifferent. It is a Category 1 pass (average gradient 6.8%, maximum gradient 8.2%). From there, you will take From Marignac station, turn right towards Saint-Béat-Lez and then Spain to reach the foot of the Portillon pass at the exit of Bossost. At the top, descend towards Luchon and then return to Marignac via the D 125C and D 125. Each bend in the climb up the Col du Portillon honours one of the Spanish winners of the Tour de France, with a stele summarising their victories. The view is worth stopping for a moment to contemplate.

Pass through Saint-Bertrand de Comminges and you will be climbing towards the Port de Balès. This unclassified pass (average gradient 6.3%, maximum 11.7%) is tough, but at the top you will be rewarded with an exceptional 360° panorama of the high peaks of the Pyrenees. From Marignac station, head towards Loures Barousse / Saint-Bertrand de Comminges, then Sarp to reach Mauléon Barousse. This is the start of the climb up to the Port de Balès. Once at the pass, descend towards Luchon, passing through all the villages in the Oueil valley, before reaching Marignac station via the D125.

Enjoy this beautiful wooded hike to discover the magnificent 12th-century signal tower. This easy walk offers views of Estenos, Fronsac and the plain from the shade of chestnut trees.

As surprising as it is beautiful, this hike has plenty of surprises in store for you. The hike will first take you to the Esputs (or Sputs) chapel, nestled on a promontory. Every year in September, a pilgrimage takes place with the inhabitants of Chaum and the surrounding villages. After mass at the chapel, everyone climbs up together and ends with a picnic.

Come and discover an unusual tree. The Rié mountain is home to one of the first trees to appear in the Pyrenees after the ice age 14,000 years ago: the thuriferous juniper. Start at the top of the village of Marignac and head to the Saint-Martin chapel. Then climb up the wagon track to complete the Thuriferous Juniper Trail loop. It runs through the Rié mountain with beautiful views and takes you back to the hamlet of Saint-Martin through the chestnut grove.

An ancient marble quarry: one of the few in the world still in good condition, known for its "Roman breach" (in the township of Lez). Votive altars and marble quarries bear witness to the Roman occupation of Saint-Béat (ex Passus-Lupi). The Roman quarry, one of the few in Europe still maintained in it’s original state, has what is known as "Roman breche" marble, where you can still see signs from the marble quarrying.

A 12th century feudal castle with a keep, stately manor, a cistern and ramparts. The present castle dates back to the 12th century. It was built by the Lords of Saint-Béat to ensure the protection of the city and the control of the valley. It was enlarged by its consuls, and under Henry IV, as well as the city was equipped with walls and gates. It was held by captains of arms until the 16th century, and if necessary, they did not hesitate to requisition the citizens of Melles to keep the place. Over the centuries, the castle did not have to endure any important military events, so it has been preserved in its present state. During the epidemic of 1855, a chapel was added to it and the statue of the Mother of God was built.
