The paths of freedom are routes that were used by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: resistance fighters, Allied pilots, Jews and those refusing to participate in the STO (compulsory work service). By attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the Nazis who threatened their very existence.
Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" invite you to discover the first part of this route, from the Col de Balès to Portet de Luchon.
This hike is suitable for families with good walking shoes. The elevation gain is 547 m, but the route is mostly downhill with a total descent of over 1,000 m.
By taking this route via the Col de Balès, you will be following in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the Françoise resistance network, one of the first to help and involved in the escape of at least 700 people.
Like André Bon, who made it to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees.
A dangerous and demanding human adventure, this gruelling journey cost the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or Nazi troops.
You who walk in the footsteps of these shadow fighters, escapees, smugglers, networks of helpers, anonymous people who contributed to the rescues and many of whom never returned... Do not forget them.
To find out more about the history of these fugitives and their smugglers, visit the website of the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" (Paths to Freedom through Comminges and the Val d'Aran).
To walk in peace and discover the flora and fauna, a mountain guide can accompany you on your hike: www.pyrenees31.com/planifier/activites/randonnees/trouver-accompagnateur/

1 - As this hike is not a loop, you will need to make arrangements in advance: you will need to leave a car at the finish point in Portet or be dropped off at the Col de Balès. In the past, this route was only taken in one direction!
2 - From the Col de Balès, take the track located 50 m below on the Bourg d'Oueil side for about 1.5 km before arriving at a cromlech and finding an ascending path.
3 - Follow this path to the Col de Peyrefitte, then descend towards the Lac de Bareilles. Be careful, some sections can sometimes be slippery and some steps are quite high.
4 - Once you reach the lake, you can enjoy its clear waters and dip your feet in! In autumn, this is where you can hear the deer bellowing. To continue the trail, take the steep slope to the left of the lake, which climbs up to the Col du Lion. This is the steepest part of the climb, which takes about 45 minutes.
5 - The arrival at the Col du Lion is spectacular: a panoramic view of the 3,000-metre peaks of the Luchon area and the Louron and Aure valleys is breathtaking. The escapees continued on their way by following the path to the left towards the Col de Pinata, but there is nothing to stop you from climbing up to the Pic du Lion (an additional 20 to 30 minutes of climbing).
6 - Once at the Col de Pinata, a 1,000-metre descent begins, still following the red and yellow markings. Pass by the Conques hut, a pretty summer pasture in the village of Jurvielle. The path then descends into the forest and passes on the right bank until it reaches the village of Portet-de-Luchon.
