The walk is a 5.3 km circular route, easy to access, just follow the yellow signs for almost 1h30. Along the way, you'll discover the orientation table on the small castle esplanade, the castle, the 13th-century market hall, the collegiate church, the canonical house or collegiate dwelling known as ‘La Commanderie’, and the English cemetery (Wellington Passage). The GR®653 crosses 10 départements, including Haute-Garonne, over a distance of 140km. This section of Via Tolosana arrives in Toulouse via the Canal du Midi and Lauragais hills and plain. Starting in Arles, Via Tolosana or Via Arletanensis heads towards the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater. From Camargue to Toulouse, GR®653 first follows Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road, then enters the foothills of Haut-Languedoc. This historic route runs through a vast landscape, enhanced by a rich architectural heritage. After Toulouse, GR653 crosses Gascony, northern Bigorre and Béarn. Then it enters Aspe valley and Aragon, in Spain. Voie d'Arles joins ‘el Camino frances’ at Puente-la-Reina. Starting out from Maurens, you can explore Lauragais. This 15km walk is suitable for all levels and takes around 3 hours 40 minutes. Between Maurens and Le Vaux, this round trail will take you to Le Vaux castle, church and castle, Juzes castle and Maurens church. On Lauragais hillsides between Maurens and Le Vaux. A route along Rigole de la Plaine, linking Saint-Ferréol and Lenclas lake; a shaded route with steep slopes. Notice to amateurs! Start: from Revel at the Moulin du Roy municipal campsite (departure area of the green route) This route has an ochre-coloured compacted sand surface that is not suitable for rollerblades. With a width of 2m, it is reserved for non-motorised modes of transport (except for horse riders). It is ideal for walking, mountain biking and provides a 17 km link to Lenclas lake from Revel. Once you reach Lenclas, the green route ends. You can then continue for around 25 km on a track to the Canal du Midi. V84 or Véloccitane is a whole itinerary from Béziers to the Canal du Midi at Naurouze threshold, via Bédarieux, Olargues, Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, Mazamet, Castres and Revel. Don't miss a visit to the Réservoir, a kind of museum dedicated to Canal du Midi history at Saint-Ferréol.

A route in the heart of the village will allow you to cross the Vendinelle via the Pont-vieux, a 15th century structure from which a toll was collected, and to discover the classified windows of the flamboyant Gothic style of the Sarda de Caumont House, an outbuilding of the old castle. A former Gallo-Roman villa, Auriac sur Vendinelle is a picturesque village that was built around its castle in the 11th century. Its religious heritage is quite atypical. The square bell tower of the Sainte Marie Madeleine church is indeed the former keep of the fortress castle. The listed chapel of Noumérens, in Romanesque style, contains a fragment of an 8th century sarcophagus containing a chrism and a rosette, symbols of the early Christian Church. The village of Auriac-sur-Vendinelle was founded by the Roman owner of this land. In fact, there was a Roman villa roughly on the site of the place known as La Durande (to the south-east of today's village). This villa, the first sign of organised settlement in Auriac, probably belonged to a local lord named Aurius, who gave his name to the village. The oldest textual reference to Auriacum dates back to the 11th century. It tells us of a castle, owned by several lords, protecting a ford. A ford is a place on a river where it is possible to cross on foot. The ford at Auriac was an important ford on a busy trade route. It was the crossing point for the vendinelle on the road from Toulouse to Revel, via Caraman. The town's golden age came at the end of the Middle Ages. It was elevated to the rank of barony at this time, under the county of Caraman. But the town's destiny was to be turned upside down in the 16th century, and on several occasions. Auriac suffered greatly during the Wars of Religion between Protestants and Catholics. In 1563, Protestants from Puylaurens attacked Auriac and pillaged the town and its inhabitants. This was a major blow for the people of Auriac. In 1568, having barely recovered from this first raid, the town was once again attacked by Huguenots. This time, an army of more than 1,000 men attacked Caraman and all the churches in the county. And again in 1570, this time to establish a more permanent presence. Fortunately, this time the inhabitants had been warned and were able to evacuate the town. This time, the town definitively went over to the Protestant side, although the inhabitants tended to be Catholic, and a few years of appeasement were in prospect. Until 1591, when Catholic troops attacked the county of Caraman and Auriac. They came from Joyeuse and ravaged the town, its houses, its castle and ... its archives. Returned to the Catholic fold in 1622, the castle was destroyed stone by stone in 1625 by order of the King. All that remains of this building is its keep, which today serves as the bell tower of Sainte-Madeleine church. It wasn't until the 19th century that the village rose from the ashes. Thanks to the development of wheat growing, Avignonet and the Lauragais region enjoyed another golden age. Developments in farming techniques transformed the region into the "granary of Toulouse". It was during this period that the village hall, which you can still admire today, was built. It was also at this time that the Rue Major was lined with shops to enable the new influx of inhabitants to live in Auriac. The town's population reached 2,000 by the end of the 19th century. A symbol of this revival, the famous "little black train", a railway line linking Toulouse to Revel in the heart of the Lauragais region, passed through Auriac as soon as it opened in 1906. A real link between the villages of the region, this train transported not only passengers, but also local agricultural produce. Used extensively by the local population, it had a lasting impact on everyday life in the village. Even today, the old station, close to the football pitch, is a reminder of a time when the railway contributed to the dynamism and openness of the Lauragais region to neighbouring towns. Today, Auriac-sur-Vendinelle is a thriving, lively town (the link with the vendinelle was added in 1927 to distinguish it from the 8 other towns with the same name in France), and a great place to live. The market is held here on Tuesdays, and many events enliven local life, such as the Festival des Ruelles at the beginning of May. You can also stock up on regional products in the "Les moulins de Perrine" shop, located just outside the village. A little further on, the chapel of Noumérens is a little jewel of Romanesque art well worth a visit.

This church, located in the heart of the village of Puylaurens in the Tarn department, is unique in that it has two bell towers. Gothic elements: Bell turret, remains of the 13th-century fortified church. The base of the bell tower and the 17th-century nave (1658); the vaults and bell tower date from the 19th century; and there is a 15th-century wooden Pietà. Located in the heart of the "Pays de Cocagne", Puylaurens is a wonderful look-out spot, overlooking the plain of Lauragais, the Montagne Noire and - when the weather allows it - the Pyrenees. This old protestant town is also the birthplace of the song-writer who first called the French Republic by the name of Marianne. The fortified town of Puylaurens became in the 16th century a high spot of the Pays de Cocagne -or land of prosperity- thanks to the cultivation of pastel, the plant from which was extracted the blue pigments used to dye textiles. The plant was sold all around Europe under the form of dried balls called "cocanhas" in occitan, which explains the name "Pays de Cocagne". The trade of pastel incidentally enabled the circulation of ideas and this is how Protestantism traveled from Northern Europe to Occitanie when the kingdom of France had always been catholic. In the year 1660, the Protestant Academy located in the city of Montauban was transferred, by order of the king, to Puylaurens. It remained there during 25 years and was shut down as the Edict of Nantes, that granted religious tolerance, was annulled. In 1792, during the French Revolution, an inhabitant of Puylaurens, the cobbler and minstrel named Guillaume Lavabre wrote a song called "La Garisou de Marianno" (the Healing of Marianne), a popular satyr in which he gave the name Marianne to the French Republic. The text of this song is the oldest written token of the attribution of that name to the Republic, the town of Puylaurens can thus be considered as the birthplace of Marianne, allegory of the French Republic. Places of interest: - Look-out over the plain of Lauragais and the mountains - The church Notre Dame du Lac and its picturesque covered market, the church was destroyed by the Protestants in 1621 and again by a fire in 1896. - The protestant temple (not open to visitors) - The half-timbered-houses from the 17th and 18th centuries - The fortification walls - The castle "Cap de Castel", former medieval construction that served as a prison during the Albigensian Crusade and is now part of a hotel-restaurant - The weekly market, the local producers market in summer, and the horse market that takes place the first Sunday of each month.

In the heart of the village, the medieval market hall shines with its beams and belfry crowned with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Don't miss the weekly Friday market. In the centre of the castelnau, the hall was built in the 13th century. In 1557, the common house was built above the hall and was accessed through the tower that contains a beautiful stone staircase. It was erected to commemorate the erection of Saint-Félix as a barony by King Henri II (the date of foundation is engraved on the frontispiece of the front door with the city's coat of arms). In 1862, the population of Saint-Félix and the surrounding area was decimated by a cholera epidemic. The town decided to offer an ex-voto to the Virgin Mary in gratitude for her protection. This 3m-high bronze statue was installed on the belfry in the heart of the village. At her feet, a plaque with a Latin inscription says ‘they established me as the guardian of your city’.

Facing Montagne Noire, the ancient Saint Felix castle has dominated the edge of Lauragais plateau for more than seven centuries. Overlooking the plain, this castle has been destroyed, rebuilt, modified and enlarged over the centuries according to the wishes of its successive owners. You can enter the courtyard, terraces and ground floors of the castle. Let's see the superb mosaic room, the old kitchen in the dungeon, the guard tower, the lounges. One of them houses our Tourist Information Centre. Here, superb Louis XVI stucco adorns the panelling above the doors and the mirrors. Each salon has its own type of parquet flooring. The rooms are open to the public from April (from the Cocagne festival onwards) until the end of September. Afterwards, enjoy the panoramic view over the countryside (photos highly recommended) and stroll around the castle in the manner of the nobles. You can visit some parts of the castle during our Tourist Information Centre opening hours. Guided tours available by prior arrangement for groups.

The highlight of St-Félix-Lauragais. The Collegiate Church dates from 1317 and contains a magnificent organ from 1781, classified as a historical monument and completely restored. Built in the early 14th century, the collegiate church of Saint-Félix-Lauragais replaced the castle chapel as the parish church. Built on a rather small plot of land, it is 50m long, 26m wide and 19m high under the vault. The 42-metre-high bell tower reaches for the heavens. The architecture of the building is in the Southern Gothic style: a single nave, chapels between the buttresses, mitre arches on the levels of the bell tower, completed by decorative elements typical of Flamboyant Gothic (high-relief sculpture). The church of Saint-Félix became a collegiate church in 1317 during the pontificate of John XXII. This honorary title established a chapter of canons whose mission was to preach the Catholic faith during the Inquisition and in the aftermath of the crusade against the Albigensians/cathars. Saint-Félix had a little help from the Lord of the village, who was none other than the Pope's brother. One of the masterpieces of the Collegiate Church is without doubt the organ and its superb Louis XV case. The organ was built in the 18th century, between 1780 and 1781. It underwent an epic restoration! It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1967. The first restoration took place in 1930, so that the organ could play Romantic music! The restorers added keyboards therefore notes to the organ. So Déodat de Séverac was able to play his romantic compositions. In 1989, a restorer from the Monuments Historiques came to Saint-Félix-Lauragais and discovered this magnificent 18th-century organ, still in all its original materials. Many organs today are mechanised and modernised for greater convenience. The organ at Saint-Félix still has its large bellows made of rabbit skins, glued together with ‘fish bone’ glue. Depending on the outside temperature, the rabbit skins also had to be moistened with a cloth... The restorer was amazed, but soon realised that the organ had been modified! What an idea to add notes! So it was decided to remove them all! The organ was restored for the second time between 1990 and 1992, losing its romantic style but regaining its original appearance.

Panorama on Lauragais plain, Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. Located on the belvedere, it offers a view of the imposing Mount Bugarach, the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. In the background are the peaks of Canigou. The colours of the panorama change with the seasons, work in the fields and light. The point of view not to be missed for any passionate photographer!

The town of Revel was founded by the French King Philippe VI in 1342. This bastide is organised around a central square where the streets converge in a grid pattern. This square with its polychrome galleries and arcades of brick, wood and stone is a real setting for a splendid medieval market hall. The 14th century market hall is one of the largest in France. It is 39 m each side and is supported by 79 oak pillars. It is the heart Revel citizen life, especially on Saturday mornings when one of the 10 most beautiful markets in France takes place. Revel Belfry, neo-classical style, dates from 1834 replacing a half-timbered and bricks architecture. The belfry rings the bell for the whole town. The country guard and town crier lived there until 1965. It had several functions: watchtower, town clocks and bells, prison and town hall. These two intertwined buildings are subject to a major restoration campaign scheduled to run from late 2024 to spring 2026. Climbing up the belfry will no longer be possible. The roof will be re-tiled, fragile beams replaced, some pillars reinforced, the bell tower masonry restored. The dome covered with its original mateial: fish-scale slates. The clocks will be settled in their original height and the terrace cladding removed to reveal the terracotta floor tiles of it conceals. The terrace door will be returned to its original position. The interior of the tower will also be refurbished to provide the best possible conditions to welcome the public after the works. In the meantime, the Tourist Office will be moved to the Musée du Bois et de la Marqueterie.
