Nature explorations at Georges Durand campsite, Larche

At the heart of a protected area , the National Park of Mercantour , a discovery of transhumance and mountain lakes. Today, the Vallon Lauzanier hosts nearly 6,000 sheep from July to October. Abandonment goshawks villages has forced farmers to transhumance by the end of the valley, before arriving at the "neighborhoods of August" to return to the fold soon after the Saints. Downstream radical changes have upset the balance of lawns, grazed too early with organic matter, given back by feces of cattle, is now up in the parks of nocturnal sleep. Impoverished, lawns are likely to suffer the ravages of excessive grazing pressure or poor movement of animals on the slopes. These repeated displacement trace indeed bare ruts, initiating active erosion. For cons, the undergrowth of larch forest, to read more untapped closes, seeing an unknown fauna appear here before. Constantly, appearance and environmental quality change. The Mercantour National Park is in charge of monitoring these changes and the survival of this heritage.

Head up the Grand Vallon stream to the Col des Orres in an enchanting setting that feels like the end of the world. Cross the bridge over the river. The route is signposted in yellow. At the le Pré l'Ansouré sign, turn left towards Col des Orres. Pass in front of the Rama hut then continue, overhanging the river. Then take a small path to the left by the Grand Vallon hut and cross the torrent. Follow the river for about 100 m then cross the torrent again on a wooden footbridge 50 m after the hut. Then follow the path on the right bank then cross the stream again below a tiered waterfall in the mountain pastures. A narrow path, marked with yellow markings and cairns, leads to the summit. Keep your eyes peeled for a left turn in a grassy area.

A tough climb to one of the highest peaks in the Parpaillon massif. The view over the Ubaye valley and the Mercantour massif from the summit of Aupillon is well worth the detour! Take the track that crosses the river, then turn right 500m after the start at the signpost for the Col de l'Aupillon (yellow markings). Turn left after 150m and follow the stream. Keep to the right of the riverbank level with a small bridge, then continue to the source of the river. Continue straight on into mountain pastures. Stay at the bottom of the valley until you find a path marked with yellow markings and cairns. The route then ascends steeply, crossing a mountain pasture where a sign points to l’Aupillon. The path twists up the wall on the right and then crosses some scree. The final section up to the pass requires care as it is more vertiginous. Once at the pass, bear left to reach the summit. Once again, there are a few more technical passages that require extra care.

This varied and continuous loop is ideal for a family outing. The view of the waterfall crowns a beautiful walk through a characteristic larch forest and along a mountain stream that provides refreshing coolness. The start is from the Plan Bridge car park. Follow the path along the stream amid the larches towards the fairy trail. Cross the river three times within a few hundred meters without ever leaving the banks. Some contemporary art pieces can be seen along the path. Continue on a small path along the stream when the path you are on makes a left turn. Take a right 150m later on a path that becomes wider, then left after the bridge onto a small path in a landscape that begins to open up onto alpine meadows. Turn left at the Chenevier Canal sign when the waterfall seems to be right above the path. Exercise greater caution until you reach the torrent. The path becomes narrow, very steep, and sometimes exposed to splashing foam. Progress is through a scree slope. Return to the Chenevier Canal sign along the same route to resume the loop. Follow the direction of Plan Bridge straight ahead when returning from the waterfall via a narrow path in the heart of the pastures. Continue straight ahead past the cabin and the explanatory panel, then the path enters a larch forest again. After a few hundred meters, take a right at the intersection to follow a small path. Take a right at the wooden car. The path begins to descend. Go straight ahead at the next intersection and again at the one after that, continuing in the larch forest. Join a wide grassy path that bends to the left, then take a path on the right in the forest 20m further on. Turn right at the Pré Vayer sign via a steeply descending path. Turn right once on the Parpaillon pass road, then return to the parking lot.

A pilgrimage site, the path of Lake Sainte Anne has many alternative routes to the Ubaye or the Lac Miroir. From the car park, go down and turn left, cross a bridge and turn left again. Get on the wide path on the left bank of the stream of the Col du Tronchet. As the trail refines, cross the stream by a bridge and take on a rise in curves.1 - At point Costes du Col Tronchet (2 164m), turn right on a path that remains levelled, cross the stream again by a wooden bridge and follow the descending false flat. Go around a large mound, and continue to the left.2 - Exit the forest on a plateau, go around it by the left and follow the last climb to the lake Sainte Anne.3 - Reach to the lake and turn left on the GR. Take a short climb and continue on the ascending false flat. At the foot of the last climb, go up to the right in the shale until Col Girardin. The same route is used for the return.

The waterfall opens onto the valley of Le Crachet, with its lively mountain stream, before flowing into the Lac du Crachet. From the car park, take the track on the right after the earth mound, and head towards the Lac du Crachet (1). Further up, in the forest, follow the mountain stream Le Crachet. Near the cabin, follow the path on the right which hugs the water course until you reach the lake (2).

Explore the ubayenne wildlife. Ibex, chamois, marmots will await you on the height of the neck Bell . Perched on a ruin or lying in the mountain pastures , you can approach the ibex and admire while maintaining an acceptable distance , failing them away ... Unique discovery in the Ubaye Valley , accessible for all.

A pleasant loop in summer, on shady forest tracks in Crévoux and the Parpaillon massif. From the village square, head up the street that starts at the war memorial. At "Champ La font 2", take the stony track opposite towards the hamlet of La Chalp. Continue straight ahead on the main path until you reach the road. At the bend, ascend the road on the right to the picnic area (Cabane des Espagnols) At the picnic area, turn right twice onto the uphill path (there is a spring if you stay on the road after the Réal bridge on the right). Stay on the main track (Route forestière de Bouche Clauze), At the bend of a track, descend to the right. At the track, descend to the right towards Crévoux, about 3.5 km. Continue straight down the main track. /!Slow down and take the barely visible path on the right towards the county town. At the end of the path, join the road and Crévoux on the right.

Crévoux is the highest village in the Communauté de Commune de Serre-Ponçon. Enjoy the peace and quiet, the shady slopes and the hamlets along the eponymous stream. From the village square, take the street leading from the war memorial. At "Champ La font 2", climb the gravel track towards the hamlet of La Chalp. Continue straight ahead on the main road. At Travers du Moulin go straight up the track. At the bend continue straight ahead (stony ascent). At the bend in the road (D39T), turn right. At the picnic area, take two right turns. Stay on the main hairpin path. Take the descent, and turn right at the bend of a track. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead (quick return possible on the right along the blue route 57) At the crossroads of the DFCI track H24, descend to the right. At Faravelle continue straight downhill then turn right. At the junction (at the end of the flat track), turn right and stay on the main track. At Les Gaillards, turn right down the road towards Saint-Sauveur. At the church of Saint-Sauveur, turn right onto the road. Turn right through the hamlet of "Coin haut" and then "Vabres", staying on the main road. At the bend in the D39, turn right towards Crévoux. At the D139, climb the road to the right towards the resort of Crévoux. Return to the car park.

Setting off from the village of Crévoux, this hike, with its agricultural and woodland backdrops, reveals a host of viewpoints over the surrounding valleys. From the square in the centre of the village, go down the main road for 50 m then continue left under the houses on a level track. After passing the first wooden cross, continue left uphill on the main track. The track then turns into a balcony path. Once you reach a track, continue straight ahead until you reach a second cross. Once you get past the crossroads, tale a left fork uphill to reach a plateau. Cross it, then at the crossroads stay on the left-hand track alongside the hedge. Once in the forest, leave the path on the left and continue straight on uphill. After 1 km, at the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the track to reach the Bajoulan lookout where you can see Lake Serre-Ponçon and the Massif des Ecrins. As you retrace your steps, at the crossroads take a right fork uphill. Stay on the track, then continue straight ahead at the intersection. After 200 m veer left along a woodland path until you come to a track on the edge of a meadow. Turn left to return to the path taken on the outward journey. From here, continue to the right following the same path as on the outward journey.

But in the meantime, there's an accessible part of the hut that can provide shelter. Just leave it clean and tidy. In winter, check the snow conditions for access to the refuge before you leave! Built at the sources of the White Drac, near the disused Champoléon cabin, this refuge with its stone roof offers tasty regional food at lunchtime and copious Alpine meals in the evening. The refuge is easy to access for families: 1 hr 30 mins from the Auberts car park (elevation: 350 m). Large number of hiking trails leaving from the refuge.

Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

The Lac du Crachet is a glacial lake, like most of the mountain lakes. It is an oligotrophic mountain lake, that is to say, it is a stretch of clear, deep, nutrient-poor water containing very little organic matter and with a high level of dissolved oxygen. It dries out completely during periods of intense drought. The Torrent du Crachet mountain stream flows from it into the little valley which shares its name, before flowing into the Crévoux mountain stream.

Here, a view of the slope of the Col Girardin at the end of autumn. Before the Sainte Anne valley, under the first ledge, are the lake and the chapel. In the background on the left are the snow-covered massifs of Ecrins.

This orchid is a herbaceous perennial plant. It is also hermaphrodite, that is to say, each plant is male and female. Grouped in threes to sixes, its flowers are very spread out and generally spotted with purplish marks on the upper side. Appearing in June to July, it flowers in the forms of a simple dense spike holding 10 to 25 purplish-red flowers. Its pollination is entomogamous, that is to say, it is pollinated by insects. It prefers damp places in full sunlight. It can be seen at altitudes of up to 2,500 metres.

Rock glaciers are composed of ice mixed with rock debris. They move very slowly. For example, the rock glacier of St Anne moves about 0.34m per year. We can distinguish 3 layers which form the rock glaciers. The top layer is formed of rocky debris, free of ice. This layer, in direct contact with the air, freezes in winter and melts in summer. The core layer is a mixture of ice and debris. The last layer is the rock debris buried by the moving glacier. Here, the rock glacier is covered with the first snowfall.

Pastoralism is a widespread livestock husbandry technique. The aim is to drive the flocks to «natural» areas where they can feed. This method helps to keep the land clear, which favours a particular biodiversity. Good management of an alpine pasture should allow the resource to be «exploited»,but without compromising its regeneration. The advantages are many, not only for the environment but also for the well-being of the animals and farmers.

A rodent of medium size, the marmot is the iconic symbol of high-altitude grasslands. It has a solid, almost cylindrical body, short ears, and stubby legs with strong claws. At the slightest sign of danger, it utters a high-pitched whistle. A true hibernator, it is only active above ground from April to October. Marmots live in family groups. Their many social interactions - grooming, playing and also fighting and biting - guarantee group cohesion and respect for the hierarchy.

Shaped like a dome, the Altocumulus lenticularis or lenticular cloud appears to be still. In reality, they are indicative of unstable air. Bumping into mountainous areas, a large mass of air rises and causes a partial condensation of the water vapour contained therein. Thus forming a cloud. Once the obstacle is passed, the cloud dissolves. It is therefore in constant movement although it seems still.

The wings in the male of this little butterfly has dark grey upper sides, rather bluish at the base, while the female is brown. It is seen most commonly at high altitude in July and August, in meadows and grassy areas. The Arctic blue is a species native to northern regions (Scandinavia, Greenland, Siberia, North America). In more temperate regions, it only lives in the mountains.

The conglomerates are composed of detrital rocks bound by a natural cement. They are composed of different rocks fractured by erosion. These rocks are generally sedimentary (as here) but can also be of volcanic origin. There are various conglomerates. Here its a breach, the rocks are angular. If the stones are pebbles, it is called "pouding" and if angular stones and pebbles are mixed, it is called "tillite".

The hosts did not wish to equip the rooms with television or wifi for more conviviality within the house. However, a TV room and a wifi area are available in the living rooms. With family or friends, the living rooms allow you to relax in an authentic setting, by the fire, between stones and old larch. Every evening, we prepare delicious dishes mainly made from local and organic products. They will be served in a restaurant room fitted out in the old sheepfold of the house with the still intact Italian vaults. Don't forget to take your bathing suit to enjoy the sauna!

At the foot of Mont Viso, in the heart of the National Reserve, Anselme and his team welcome you at 2460 m altitude from mid-June to mid-September. Accommodation in dormitories. The refuge is equipped with 65 dormitory places for 6 to 16 people, a sanitary area with solar showers, a lounge/library area and a terrace with an exceptional view of Mont Viso. The cuisine is healthy and refined, using organic produce from the Hautes-Alpes region. Anselme and his team welcome you to this corner of the world, far from civilization! You're guaranteed to recharge your batteries in nature's treasure trove! The Refuge du Viso is located in the Queyras region on the Italian border, at the foot of the magnificent giant Mont Viso, which rises to an altitude of 3841m. The refuge sits on a large grassy plateau in a wide alpine cirque at an altitude of 2460m. In summer, the refuge is open from June 15 to September 15. It also opens in spring for ski touring. But in the meantime, there's an accessible part of the hut that can provide shelter. Just leave it clean and tidy. In winter, check the snow conditions for access to the refuge before you leave! Mountain refuge located at the source of the Bléone river, at an altitude of 2,050 m in the village of Prads-Haute-Bléone. Accessible only on foot (3h walk). Numerous hikes available, including the Tête de l'Estrop at 2961m of altitude, as well as sport fishing, bouldering and slacklining. Accommodation and catering available by prior arrangement. Catering only at lunchtime. No reservations in July and August.
