Belley city heritage

Belley, historic and religious capital of Bugey . A bishopric since the 6th century, Belley has left its religious mark on the whole of Bugey: cathedral, churches, chapels.... In Gallo-Roman times, Belley was one of the region's most important towns, benefiting from its position as a crossroads on the road linking Lyon and Geneva. Recent excavations have uncovered a vast spa complex. The town's emblem is the she-wolf, the etymology of Belley referring to Bellone, the Roman goddess of war, represented by this animal. Don't miss the bronze she-wolf in the Grande Rue, sculpted by Colette Sonzogni. 1077: Bugey is ceded by the Holy Roman Empire to the House of Savoy. After the Treaty of Lyon in 1601, marking the attachment of Bugey to France, Belley became the seat of the Baillage and was administratively attached to the province of Burgundy. To admire: the inner courtyard of the Tourist Office, former seat of the Baillage. St Jean Baptiste Cathedral: Classified as a historic monument, Belley's neo-Gothic Cathédrale St Jean-Baptiste was built on the site of the 12th-century cathedral, of which only traces remain on the north portal. For the most part, it dates from the 19th century. Palais épiscopal and Parc Jean-Pierre Camus: Listed as a historic monument since 1932, the former 18th-century bishop's palace was bought by the town in 1978 and now houses the municipal library, the Société Savante Le Bugey, and serves as an exhibition and reception hall. To discover : The park, entirely renovated in 2010 by the City of Belley to make it a place to relax and stroll. The courtyards: Numerous 15th-century courtyards line the Grande Rue. Discover them on tours organized by the Tourist Office, including the courtyard of the birthplace of Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the famous gastronome and author of the culinary treatise "The Physiology of Taste".

Maison d'Izieu, Memorial to exterminated Jewish children

A place of life that has become a place of national remembrance, the Maison d'Izieu, a museum and memorial, offers visitors the opportunity to discover history, justice and remembrance today through guided tours of the house and its permanent and temporary exhibitions. When you arrive, a striking setting awaits you. At the end of the road, you can see the house with the blue shutters, where Sabine and Miron Zlatin took in over a hundred Jewish children to save them from anti-Semitic persecution. It was in this same house that, on the morning of 6 April 1944, on the orders of Klaus Barbie, one of the heads of the Gestapo in Lyon, 44 children and 7 of their teachers were rounded up and deported. Only one of the instructors, Léa Feldblum, returned. A memorial museum since 1994, Maison d'Izieu welcomes over 40,000 visitors a year, including 18,000 schoolchildren. Through the history of the colony, it seeks to convey a universal message of vigilance and the fight against all forms of discrimination. Located on a protected site classified as a historic monument, this residence perched on a hill in the Bugey-Sud region is a must-see in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, at the gateway to Isère and Savoie. You can take a guided tour of the house, evoking the lives of the children through letters, drawings and photos. The museum, housed in the former barn, is divided into three areas to explore in greater depth the historical context of the Second World War, the networks for rescuing Jewish children, international criminal justice, crimes against humanity and the construction of memory. Since 2022, one area of the museum has been dedicated to the exhibition of its collections, documents and objects that Maison d'Izieu preserves itself: the Galerie Zlatin. Each year, a temporary exhibition is scheduled to give visitors the chance to discover "real" archive documents!

Winemaking Traditions Museum

The Musée des Traditions Vigneronnes (Museum of Winegrowing Traditions) houses one of the largest and most beautiful collections of ancient tools (over 1300) and objects related to the work of the vine and wine. Throughout 3 rooms, this museum brings back to life thousand-year-old arts. The Musée des Traditions Vigneronne was born of the Caveau Bugiste's desire to preserve the memory of the gestures and skills of yesteryear. The exhibits come from the Caveau's own research, as well as from a personal collection built up over more than 20 years by Jean-Pierre Melin, an equally enthusiastic Bugiste. - Fossous, départoirs and échaudeuses recall the patient stages leading up to the grape's blossoming. - Rassiots, gauges and presses illustrate the skilful winemaking process. - Verdondaines, jabloirs and dolloires evoke the perfect mastery of the cooper. Many of these objects date from the 18th century, and some are rare and even unique. Au Caveau Bugiste : - Museum of stone tools - Collection of corkscrews (over 800) and liqueur glasses (over 500) - Vinorama “Tourism, Viticulture and Gastronomy in the Land of Brillat Savarin”: documentary presenting the Ain, Bugey, its history, vineyards, gastronomy, vine cultivation, vinification of different grape varieties, distillation and aging of spirits. - Temporary painting and sculpture exhibitions. - Tasting of wines from the cellar and local products (terrines, honeys, jams, oils, cookies, sausages, etc.).
