In the heart of the Parias reserve, an exceptional jewel in terms of biodiversity and landscape, this low-level hike takes in the vast Partias valley and brings you face to face with numerous alpine animals: marmots, sheep, birds of prey... Park in the parking lot just beyond the hamlet of Les Combes. Continue along the dirt track to cross the barrier marking the entrance to the Partias Regional Nature Reserve. A descriptive sign explains the regulations in force and the specific features of this reserve. Continue straight ahead into the heart of the Partias via the forest track for 600 metres, then head towards Lac des Partias on a stone-paved alpine pasture path. A flat area marks the arrival at a sheepfold and the Lac des Partias. Go around the sheepfold, then the path rises to the right and crosses a large alpine meadow (Melivrin ravine) to finally reach the shepherd's hut. On the right, in the heights, you can see the paravalanche slopes of the Serre Chevalier resort. Continue past the shepherd's hut: the path veers slightly to the right and reaches the Col de la Pisse 300 metres further on. A panoramic view of the Écrins opens up, with the Pic de Clouzis in the foreground. Return by the same route.

Magnificent hike in the heart of a protected reserve: the Partias reserve, a wild place where flora and fauna cohabit in abundance. Cross the barrier and continue straight into the heart of the Partias via a wide path for around 600 meters. At the fork in the road, take the left-hand path towards Col de la Trancoulette (signposted). The path climbs up through the forest below Rocher Jaune, up a valley and then begins a short, steady climb to the pass. Once at the pass, take the left-hand path; the ridge is visible to the south-west. Signs point the way to the Aquila cross. Follow this path until the final, more aerial section through the rocks to reach the cross. The panorama from this rocky promontory is simply breathtaking. The return journey takes the same route.

A remarkable lookout perched at an altitude of almost 3,000m in the heart of the Partias Reserve, this hike offers incomparable views of the Écrins massif and unique vistas of the Vallouise and Durance valleys. The path climbs up through the forest below Rocher Jaune, up a valley and then begins a short, steady climb to the pass. At the pass, take the right-hand path (signposted Cime de la Condamine). The path crosses the vast "Clot des Amandiers" mountain pasture and skirts two small lakes until it reaches the "Peyre du Feu" area. The path is partially marked in places, follow the cairns to the Col de Vallouise. At the Col de Vallouise, take the well-marked path to the right, which climbs up the mountain. The path then winds a little steeper through the rocky bars, with two tricky passages in the escarpments, before reaching the large dome of the Cime de la Condamine. The return journey takes the same route. (Alternatively, you can continue via the Crête de Coste Groselière and then descend via the Col de la Pisse and Fond de Closis/Vallon des Partias).

On this short walk below the village, you'll discover an unlikely little cemetery tucked away in the Bois du Ban forest: Le cimetière de la Peste, built during the plague epidemic of 1629-1631. From the small parking lot on the last bend below Puy-Saint-Pierre, take the wide dirt track (GR50 markings, red and white) signposted Les Eduits - StChaffrey. This dirt track continues flat for 600 meters, stopping at the crossroads (Les Queyrelles-Briançon - StChaffrey - Pralong-Notre dame des neiges - Prorel). Go down to the sign (Accès domaine - Briançon - Prorel) and pass under the Prorel gondola, which quickly leads to the wide Prorel ski run (Vauban). At this point, walk a few metres down this grassy stretch to pick up a small path just opposite. The route to follow is marked by a red sign indicating "Le Cimetière de la Peste". After a few steps, a red sign indicates the location of the cemetery on the left, overlooking the path. The cemetery itself, whose entrance is marked by a cross, is very modest in size, but a true testimony to a plague epidemic that struck much of Europe. Pick up the path again, which continues through the woods, then rises steeply for a hundred metres or so, to pick up the wide GR50 track that leads back to your starting point on the left.

A balcony hike offering breathtaking views over the Durance Valley. On your return, visit the village of Puy-Saint-Pierre and its farm: feast on the various regional products. To do this marked snowshoe hike, you'll need to take the Prorel gondola and get off at the first section. However, you can get back on the marked itinerary by driving to Puy-Richard. Once off the first section, turn left away from the ski area and follow the snowshoe itinerary opposite the ski lifts. The itinerary is marked with purple milestones. The trail rises gradually before descending to Puy-Richard. The itinerary then descends to the heights of Puy-Saint-Pierre before returning to your starting point via the Ferme de Pra Long.

The Prorel summit overlooks Puy Saint Pierre and Briançon. On arrival, there's a superb panoramic view of the Serre Chevalier valley, the Ecrins and the Rochebrune peak. Detailed itinerary : 1. From the church square in Puy-Saint-Pierre, take the small tarmac road opposite the church, which climbs two hairpin bends to reach the Pralong farm. 2. A few metres after the farm, take the wide track. After about 100 m, take the footpath rising to the left, signposted "Notre-Dame des Neiges et ses oratoires". The narrow path leads to a track: on the right, you can see the Prorel ski lifts. Ignore the right-hand track and follow it to the left for around 100 m. 3. On the right, pick up the narrow path leading to the first oratory: Sainte Marie (alt: 1700m) . At this first oratory, continue straight ahead to cross the track a second time and reach the Etoile du Matin oratory (alt: 1840m). 4. Follow the path to the left to reach the Serre Pelat ski lift. Ignore the left-hand path in the direction of the combes, and pass under the ski lift again, near the Saint-Joseph oratory (Alt: 1950). The path then continues to pass a 4th oratory-fountain of Notre-Dame de Bon Rencontre, then bends to the left to pass under the ski lift one last time. 5. After leaving the ski lift, the path crosses a flat area (wetland in places) to pass the 5th oratory, Saint Hubert. The route then winds up a steep slope through scree to reach the chapel on a ledge. 6. At the chapel, take the path just behind. It crosses the wide ski slopes to the end of the ski lifts, then twists and turns up to the summit. 7. Return by the same route to the oratory-fountain of Notre-Dame de Bon Rencontre. Once there, take the left-hand path, which gradually descends to join the Prorel trail, which leads to Ferme de Pralong, before returning to the church.

Discover the Col du Prorel by ski touring on a signposted itinerary. It's an itinerary to suit all levels, with a choice of positive vertical drops equal to 500m d+, 650m d+ or 840m d+. From the parking lot in the village of Puy-Saint-Pierre, walk up the route de la ferme de Pralong to put on your skis in the hairpin at the oratory. There are a number of escape routes to suit your level of skiing, and you can also escape via the slopes. A second departure is possible from the intermediate station of the Prorel gondola from Briançon.

A sensational circuit which crosses the territory of the Pays des Écrins from north to south.

A long valley where the sheep spread out, an ascent zig-zagging across a prairie then, hidden behind a cross cliff, the reward: the lake with milky waters. A beautiful journey! From Chambran car park, follow the track which leads to the bottom of the valley. Further along, it leaves on the right a track to the Eychauda mountain pass. After a big walkway over the torrent, follow the trail which passes not far from the pastoral cabin. The track gently rises in the bottom of the top the foot of the rocky ridge. It bends upwards, first over a large scree slope then flowered grass land. A small lower shelf and there is the lake, well hidden behind its cross cliff. It nestles at the bottom of the glacial cirque surrounded by high ridges.Return using the same itinerary. 

From a vantage point overlooking the small valley of Chambron, discover this themed path marked by animal husbandry. From Chambron, follow the track leading towards the valley bottom.  Turn right to start the ascent.  Make a there-and-back detour to admire the view down over the Cabane des Fons standing in the valley. Retrace your steps and then follow signs for the cabin ("Cabane"). Take the path on the right leading towards the Cabane du Clot de la Selle. The route runs close to the mountain hut, and then rises above it up an escarpment. The path then runs along the hillside; it leads across a vast scree of limestone blocks and carries on level through the alpine pasture before dropping down to the recent Cabane des Prés du Rocher.  Take the access track to the mountain hut, to join the road. Follow it for a few hundred metres until you reach Chambran.

Small cozy alpine hut, nestled at an altitude of 2223 m in the gentle Clarée valley. It is located on a mound between larches, high steep walls and beautiful valleys with rounded shapes. Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. In summer, you can come either by car to the parking lot of the same name some 300 m upstream from the refuge, or by shuttle bus, depending on the time of day and the season: Accueil Tourisme Névache. On the first floor, two small dormitories with single and double beds for 4 people, and two dormitories for 7 and 8 people with single or double beds equipped with sheets and comforters (bring your own sheets and comforter bags). On the first floor, sanitary facilities and hot showers (bring your own toiletries). In the dining room, which seats between 36 and 40, a beautiful Masse (Tulikivi) stove radiates a gentle warmth that you'll appreciate whatever the weather! For humid summer days or snowy winters, a dryer running on excess energy from the pico power station will dry your clothes and shoes in no time. Electricity is provided by a pico-power station fed by the Cula torrent, making the refuge completely self-sufficient. Terzo Alpini is a refuge located in the Vallée Étroite, at an altitude of 1780 m. It is part of the commune of Névache. The Vallée Etroite is part of the commune of Névache, and is a listed and protected site. Managed by Riccardo and Anna Novo, the refuge is open in summer from mid-June to mid-September, and in winter from mid-February to mid-April. It is also open out of season on weekends (booking required). For New Year's Eve, reservations by telephone only. Catering by prior arrangement. The refuge : Terzo Alpini welcomes up to 34 guests (20 in rooms and 14 in dormitories). The refuge has hot showers on every floor, summer and winter alike (hot showers cost €1). Both the small rooms and the dormitory are equipped with wooden bunk beds, making for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The refuge comprises 2 rooms for 2 people, 2 rooms for 4 people, 1 room for 8 people and a dormitory for 14 people. Accommodation 1/2 board, picnic baskets on request. The cuisine: At Terzo Alpini, Italian tradition comes first! You can try Piedmontese starters such as anchovies au vert, beans in salad, petite tome, cold cuts, sweet and sour zucchinis and many other specialities. At Terzo Alpini, polenta has pride of place! It's put more than one exhausted hiker back on his feet! It's served with alpine cheeses, meat and sausage, or venison cooked by Riccardo. Of course, we also offer daily specials such as ossobuco, tajine and more... And for children, we have a special menu. The Vallée Étroite is the ideal location for a wide range of sporting activities: ski touring, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, hiking and horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing on the magnificent routes of the "Paroi des militaires"... Accessible on foot from Névache, Modane and Bardonecchia in summer, but also by car, it can only be reached by cross-country skiing, ski touring or snowshoeing in winter.

At the edge of the Ecrins National Park, the Serre Chevalier ski resort extends over several towns and villages on the right bank of the Guisane, from Monêtier-les-Bains to Briançon. Founded in 1941 with the Chantemerle cable car, it has the biggest ski area in the southern Alps with 61 ski lifts on all levels from an altitude of 1,200 m to 2,830 m to Pic de l'Yret (Le Monêtier-les-Bains). The resort’s logo is an eagle, in reference to Baron Borel du Bez, Briançon’s representative in 1792 at the Legislative Assembly, which ruled France between 1792 and 1795, during the French Revolution. Le Bez is a hamlet in Villeneuve that was united with the Chantemerle ski resort in the 1970s.

From the snow on the high peaks to the tap, there's just one step: catchment of the water sources. Located over 2,150 metres above sea level at the entrance to the valley of La Moulette, the upper catchment of La Moulette supplies the municipality of Le Monêtier-les-Bains with a proportion of its drinking water. With 164 thousand cubic metres of underground water abstracted every year, this is an important water source for the village. The water is naturally drinkable and meets the quality requirements in force for every parameter measured by health controls.

Lower down as you cross the area, near the pastoral Cabane de l'Eychauda, you can make out piles of stones, the clapiers formed by the removal of stones from the hay meadows. In order to feed the livestock right through the winter, it was necessary to garner a large amount of hay! With changes in livestock farming practices, there are no longer cut for hay, but used for grazing. Only a tiny area of the valley - the flattest - is still mown for hay, mechanically.

If you do not leave too late, you are likely to be able to see the marmots. They like the grass where they can dig their burrows. Stay discreet, do not try to approach them, you will disturb them. Don’t expect to see them in the hottest part of the day: it is much too hot to go out and there are too many people around!

This cabin shelters the shepherd from June to September. In order to not be carried away by the avalanches, it has been built under the shelter of the big boulder and it has a pitched roof that extends along the slope of the mountain. Another cabin situated above the Chambon valley makes it possible for the flock to exploit the supply of grass over the weeks. 

Right up to the cabin, you can distinguish in the surrounding prairies big tufts of tough grass, the East Alpine Violet Fescue. This poaceae (a grass) is in competition with all the other plants and takes up a lot of space.  Formerly, mowing limited its development and encouraging other meadow plants for foraging. At the moment, this plant must be grazed early in the season when the leaves have not yet hardened after this the animals refuse them. 

You will see plenty of nettles around the pastoral cabin! It is a plant living on soils full of nitrogen, which comes from the urine and the excrement of the moutons spending the night here. The small tortoiseshell caterpillars love to eat their leaves; the name in French refers to the caterpillar not the butterfly! The butterfly, also called the small tortoiseshell, can be from March onwards because it is rare for adult butterflies to hibernate.

The path winds around large blocks of limestone, fallen from the overlooking cliffs. Limestones are ancient sediments, deposited on the alpine ocean seafloor and then raised up, folded, solidified, broken and displaced by the compression forces which resulted in the disappearance of the ocean and the formation of the Alps.

Traditional cuisine. The meal of the day is carefully cooked with local ingredients : lamb meat, wild foraging soups, gratins and savoury pies, the famous blueberry pie, crumbles... all of this in a welcoming and moutainy setting ! Restaurant of typical high mountain pasture, located in Fontcouverte, a hamlet +1860m. Formerly a place where cheese was made, the Fruitière now operates as a restaurant, and is an unmissable stop in the higher Clarée valley. Anything from snacks to real meals, you will find housecooked, local food and moutain specialties. Open everyday in wintertime, summertime and All Saints' Day holidays. Booking in advance is recommanded for lunches, and necessary for dinners (dinners only in summertime). Access in wintertime is only on foot/snowshoe, or ski. 1h30 from Névache Ville-Haute. During the summer, the road is accessible either by car, bike or on foot. Please note that credit/debit cards are not accepted : cash or cheques only.

Come for lunch or dinner in the exceptionnal setting of this inn ! The Arpelin is located at an altitude of 1745m, on the Great Alps road and at the foot of the mythical Col de l'Izoard. Discover the inn's great speciality: fire-cooked lamb! You can also enjoy tourtons, blueberry tarts and other regional and mountain delicacies. Since the end of 2024, the inn is run by its two new managers, Candice and Thibaut Lerich Meignien, who have introduced a few new features the return of raclette and a games library accessible from the age of 3, adapted to all ages and player profiles. An arcade machine has also been installed for even more fun. The must-try fire-cooked lamb is almost always available booked in advance, depending on arrivals. Small cozy alpine hut, nestled at an altitude of 2223 m in the gentle Clarée valley. It is located on a mound between larches, high steep walls and beautiful valleys with rounded shapes. Originality of the refuge: near the refuge, you can spend a night in a traditional Mongolian house: a yurt of about 20 square meters, provided with 5 beds with real duvets. Meals and toilets at the refuge. Atmosphere and comfort guaranteed! All the contrasting atmosphere of this beautiful Cerces massif is there.

The refuge is an ancient witness to the pioneering days of mountaineering in Vallouise in the second half of the 19th century... At that time it was situated at the foot of the glacier. It was built in 1886 to provide shelter under the rock for the first mountaineers. With its small dimensions, and materials of stone and wood, it represents a historical reference. Its remains shelter an exhibition retracing its history.

To provide mountaineers with a little more comfort, refuges gradually replaced the early bivouacs and shelters. Thus, the Tuckett refuge, built in 1886, superseded the rock shelter still visible nearby. It was replaced in 1948 by the Refuge du Glacier Blanc and later converted into a museum. The existing Refuge des Écrins, standing at the top of the glacier, was built in 1968. It replaced the Refuge Caron which had been built in 1922, itself replacing an initial 1903 Caron shelter.

Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. In summer, you can come either by car to the parking lot of the same name some 300 m upstream from the refuge, or by shuttle bus, depending on the time of day and the season: Accueil Tourisme Névache. On the first floor, two small dormitories with single and double beds for 4 people, and two dormitories for 7 and 8 people with single or double beds equipped with sheets and comforters (bring your own sheets and comforter bags). On the first floor, sanitary facilities and hot showers (bring your own toiletries). In the dining room, which seats between 36 and 40, a beautiful Masse (Tulikivi) stove radiates a gentle warmth that you'll appreciate whatever the weather! For humid summer days or snowy winters, a dryer running on excess energy from the pico power station will dry your clothes and shoes in no time. Electricity is provided by a pico-power station fed by the Cula torrent, making the refuge completely self-sufficient. In this friendly environment, we'll let you enjoy simple, generous, high-quality cooking, using organic and local produce, so that young and old alike will be rested and refreshed before setting off again, backpacked, to explore the many hiking trails that this luminous Clarée valley has to offer. The summer refuge is : Your base camp, for touring Mont Thabor (GR57), touring the Cerces massif, hiking to discover the beauty of lakes Béraudes, Long, rond, and many more. A stopover for motorcyclists on the Route des Grandes Alpes A thirst-quenching, gourmet stopover for cyclists and mountain bikers, A rest area for donkey trekkers, who can enjoy the meadows beneath the refuge. A meeting point where you can simply enjoy the view from the terrace and take full advantage of nature.

In 1891, 4 tonnes of wood were brought by train to L'Argentière before being transported by car, then on donkeys up to the old Puiseux shelter. It was then pulled up by men using sleds to the intended spot. This mountain refuge was used for 70 years before becoming a storeroom for the wardens and then lodgings for their helpers in 1962. The summer before, 145 tonnes of materials were this time heliported, to enable the construction of the Pelvoux mountain refuge. It was inaugurated on the 15th July 1962 in the presence of Maureice Herzog, high commissioner for Youth and Sports at the time.
