Built by the transient fortune of two financiers at the end of Louis XIV’s reign, this chateau is a model of eighteenth century architecture and decoration. The most famous occupier was the Marquise de Pompadour, who rented the chateau for three years in 1757, spending a considerable amount on it. The century which followed saw the chateau passing from hand to hand before being acquired by Count Louis Cahen d’Anvers, who spent a fortune on restoring it. The Count’s son gifted the chateau and land to the State in 1935 and it became one of the official residences of the French Republic. Many kings and heads of State were welcomed there. The architect Jean Baptiste Bullet endeavoured to improve domestic layout by building rooms that no longer communicated with each other, an innovation. For the first time, there were ante-rooms and dressing rooms, and hidden staircases for access to the servants’ quarters. The novelty of a dining room specially reserved for taking meals was also an improvement. In the salons and rooms on the ground floor and first floor, exquisite furniture and refined decorations can be seen. The Chinese salon has panels painted by Huet that illustrate the oriental tastes of the eighteenth century. Visitors will see a delightful portrait of the Marquise dressed as a gardener on their tour.

With a collection of almost 70,000 objects and documents tracing the daily and military life of the 14-18 war, the Musée de la Grande Guerre, which opened its doors on November 11, 2011 on the site of the First Battle of the Marne in Meaux, is Europe's largest museum on the First World War. Over 4,000 m², it presents one of the richest and most diversified collections on the First World War, in an attractive and innovative scenography. The Musée de la Grande Guerre is the ideal place for a family visit. A veritable educational treasure trove through the collection: see, hear, touch, handle.... A playful itinerary accessible to visitors aged 5 and over: projections of archive images, trench reconstructions, a video space in which visitors are immersed among the soldiers in the trenches or on the battlefield, games to discover the composition of uniforms, the sounds of war, the geographical evolution of conflict zones... Several audio tours are available free of charge on your cell phone or tablet; ask for instructions at reception. Since November 2024, come and discover an installation never seen before in France: an open-air trench. Within a contemporary building, ARCHÉA suggests making discover the history of the Country of France through the result of archaeological researches led for 40 years. About 750 objects stemming from 87 present archeological sites in the collections of the museum are presented within an alive and interactive permanent exhibition. Movies, reconstructions, elements to be treated and models help to seize better this history. ARCHÉA, it is also the archeological site of Orville's castle and the ceramic heritage of the valley of Ysieux the discovery of which allows to understand the work of the archaeologists. Two new temporary exhibitions are proposed every year on themes bound to the archaeology and to the history.

As if it were the Baie de Somme... Its 241 hectares, 60% of which are covered by water, offer visitors a patchwork of amazing landscapes located in the immediate vicinity of the Marne: ponds, reed beds, meadows and groves provide shelter and food for more than 225 species of birds, some of which are endangered in the region, and which are undoubtedly the most remarkable wealth of the reserve ... Exceptional for the fauna and flora it shelters, it is part of the Natura 2000 site "Les Boucles de la Marne". Not so long ago, the Grand-Voyeux Regional Nature Reserve was still a quarry, where conveyors extracted sand and gravel with a crunch of grains. Excavated in the 1970s, the cavities were gradually transformed into waterholes, quickly colonised by reeds and birds, thus allowing nature to take over. The Maison du Grand-Voyeux is open to the public two days a week, with the aim of helping visitors discover the Grand-Voyeux while preserving biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystems. A discovery trail and observatories allow visitors to discover the incredible landscapes of the site and the multitude of bird species that have found refuge there. Nature activities, workshops and thematic conferences are also organised regularly and free of charge (see programme online at www.maisondugrandvoyeux.fr). Managed by the Agence des espaces verts (AEV) of the Île-de-France Region since 1999, it was classified as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2012. A partner of the AEV, the Association pour la Valorisation des Espaces Naturels du Grand Voyeux is responsible for the scientific monitoring of the site and for certain activities.

At 30 km from Paris this leisure centre offers a unique setting in this region. Amongst the proposed facilities, the is a camp site ***, several nature trails, sport and relaxation facilities, a horse riding centre, water sport as sailing, wakeboard or canoeing. Of course there is swimming in nice clean water (“Pavillon bleu” blue flag a French environment label). There is also a special attention accorded to permit handicapped people to have access to leisure activities. The leisure centre of Jablines offers a wide range of activities all year round.

Officially inaugurated on 5 September 2004, the museum's collection brings together numerous objects discovered in recent years during excavations on various French battlefields: weapons, helmets, bowls, bottles... The museum also houses documentation on the Great War, including books, magazines, posters, postcards and photos, as well as a scale model of the battlefield with figurines. In 2004, following the 90th anniversary ceremonies and the many historic marches accompanied by 12 Moroccan officers, a replica of a complete Moroccan rifleman's uniform was donated by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. Another mannequin represents Charles Péguy, in his 276th Infantry Regiment Lieutenant uniform. The military canteen bearing his name was kindly donated by the Péguy family. On 6 September 2009, Michel Péguy, Charles Péguy's grandson, presented the museum with the kepi and epaulettes from Lieutenant Péguy's ceremonial uniform. The Musée 14-18 de Villeroy is a 5th category public establishment with a capacity of 19 people. The museum publishes books, which can be found on the website.

On 5 September 1914, only a few hours after the first Battle of the Marne started, poet and writer Charles Péguy was struck in the head by a bullet as he gallantly led his men in an attack on German positions. At around 4.30pm, in scorching heat, the 276th Infantry Regiment to which he belonged set off towards the Monthyon hillock, to cover the retreat of Moroccan riflemen who were fighting against the Germans. Out in the open, in a field that offered no shelter whatsoever, the men fell one after the other under German machine-gun fire. This memorial stone pays tribute to this monument to French literature, who fell on the field of honour in the first moments of the battle. At the base of the cross, some verses remind us of the work of this great author and his patriotic sentiments. "Blessed are those who died for carnal earth. Provided it was in a just war. The elevatory factory of Trilbardou is a pumping station built under Napoleon III. Its role is to complete the water supplies of the Ourcq canal with water from the Marne river. It notably offers an impressive testimony of the hydropower technological innovations of the XIXth Century. The original pumping machine, first implemented in 1869, was created by the hydraulic engineer Alphonse Sagebien. The plant is composed of a monumental water-wheel of 11 m diameter and 6 m large functioning under a 1,20m waterfall, and operating four volumetric pumps that can push back 27000m3 of water everyday. If, in Trilbardou today’s pumping is performed with newer installations, the Sagebien machine is classified as Historical Monument.

On 5 September 1914, the Germans were at the gates of Paris and fighting was raging in the countryside around Meaux. It was on the plain between Chauconin Neufmontiers and Villeroy that Lieutenant Charles Péguy led his men to the rescue of their Moroccan comrades who were fighting the Germans a short distance away. The fighting was fierce and many men were killed. Today, many of them are buried in the "Grande Tombe" (Great Tomb), not far from where they fell. After the war, the bodies were not repatriated to the military cemeteries. The Great Tomb is thus one of the last mass graves in France, where soldiers and officers are buried.

This former sand pit, located in a loop of the Marne in the municipalities of Trilbardou and Charmentray constitutes a body of water of more than 100 hectares. As part of its policy of land acquisition and enhancement of sensitive natural areas, the General Council of Seine-et-Marne is working to enhance the Olivettes site. This natural space shelters a remarkable avifauna in period of nesting and wintering; such as the Goldeneye or Common Merganser hibernating in winter, or the Black Milan and the Bluethroat (species breeding in the reed bed of the site: access prohibited unless authorized). >> A pedestrian path (accessible to people with reduced mobility and strollers) allows you to discover the natural and landscape heritage of the site. Between the Marne and farmland, the Forêt régionale des Vallières grows on the underground galleries of former gypsum quarries. Perched on a hillside, this forest overlooks the regional leisure island of Jablines-Annet (77) and is home to remarkable biodiversity. Because of its ornithological interest, the Forêt régionale des Vallières is fully included in the Natura 2000 site “Les boucles de la Marne”, under the Birds Directive. It is also a refuge for many species of bat. The site is managed by Île-de-France nature, which organizes themed nature events throughout the year.

On foot, by bike, on horseback, by boat... The Marne and its banks can be discovered throughout the whole year. The river runs through nine communes of Marne and Gondoire. The Marne is the longest French tributary. 525 km long, the Marne begins in Haute-Marne, on the Langres plateau. You can travel along its 183 km of navigable streams, from Epernay to its confluence the Seine, and enjoy a river stop at Lagny-sur-Marne. It is the ideal departure point to discover a region with a rich natural and historic heritage, but also to enjoy water and sporting activities like rowing and canoeing.

The village of Chauconin-Neufmontiers bore the full brunt of the fighting in September 1914. The town was devastated and the church in Neufmontiers was transformed into a makeshift hospital during the battle, with the altar serving as an operating table. The church bears poignant inscriptions, written in pencil on the walls, testimonies of distress left by wounded French soldiers.

The native place of Louis Braille is situated in this typical village in a street bearing his name. The house was turned into a museum in 1959, classified as national monument it has conserved its authentically setting and aspect. The museum is run by the world organisation for blind, the French comity Louis Braille and the township of Coupvray, owner of the place. In 2009 a new entrance hall was set up in the former barn building it is named after “Jean Roblin ” founder of a local association, which has conserved this place before it became a museum. Louis Braille is born here in on January 4th 1809. At the age of 3 the boy hurt his eye using the tools of his father a saddle marker. The infection passed to the second eye and the boy goes blind t the age of 5. He is a brilliant student in the village school, which he left at the age of 10 in order to continue his studies in Paris at the royal institution for blind. There Louis Braille elaborates and teaches his system of writing based on six raised points namely for music also. 1835 Louis Braille has tuberculosis of which he dies in 1852. First buried in the local cemetery close to his family his corps is brought to the Pantheon in 1952 for a national tribute to his invention. There is a reliquary of his hands on the funeral monument in Coupvray.
