The "sentier des narcisses" (narcissus trail) is a beautiful walk in Châteauponsac on the banks of the Gartempe. This town, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Gartempe", reveals itself to hikers. This river, a favorite with anglers, is lively, clear and deep. In the right season (May and June), you'll enjoy fields of daffodils.

Hiking through the Haute-Vienne in the magnificent massif of the Monts d'Ambazac, the first western foothills of the Massif Central, which culminate at 701 m altitude. You will walk through the Limousin mountains and its historical heritage. This hike will offer you many panoramas on the Monts d'Ambazac, and will take you through forests of deciduous trees, conifers and beech trees. Dive into the history of the 12th century, with the chapel of the monastic order of Grandmont (variant), and discover the many villages with traditional architecture.

Starting out from the village of Rancon, you can observe the 12th-century Lanterne des morts (lantern of the dead) on the site of the old cemetery, which was used to keep watch over the dead. The botanical trail of the three mills offers a 6km nature walk. The trail was created in 2022 by CE1-CE2 and CM1-CM2 pupils from Rancon elementary school, together with their teachers and a forestry professional. The trail runs alongside the Gartempe River in a "Natura 2000" listed site (Gartempe valley) and allows visitors to discover different species of trees, shrubs and plants (51 in total). These are presented on small panels all along the trail. A small guide is available from the Rancon town hall for further information. An easy hike, ideal for the whole family!

This 2-hour walk will take you through the countryside around Bessines-sur-Gartempe, with beautiful views and passages through sunken lanes. At the edge of the pond of Sagnat, discover the tree circuit and enjoy a swimming break during the summer.

In the land of Suzanne Valadon, between the water and the stones, you will take a walk of great tranquillity. The banks of the lake and the village of the same name, Sagnat, are worth a visit.

Outside you'll find artistic installations in the making, including a natural swimming pool and a fountain with sculpture. For your accommodation, choose between our "terrace" room with a large dressing room and the "gallery" room, which also gives access to the terrace. Excellent wifi connection. This 1850 family home bears the name of the two sisters who have always lived there; they chose to furnish it with a touch of vintage chic: certain objects and furnishings have been found, others have always been there but have been rethought and restored to preserve the soul of the place. The different levels and cosy, adjoining rooms make this an unusual gîte in the heart of a small hamlet typical of the Saint Pardoux Le Lac area. A pleasant patio with summer kitchen and unoverlooked 6x3 m swimming pool is open from May 1 to October 15. A small enclosed garden of 200 m² is accessible (50 m away) via the path behind the house in the heart of the hamlet.

Overlooking the Gartempe valley, the church of Saint Thyrse stands at the heart of the village of Châteauponsac. Dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, it was restored in the 15th century when the town was fortified following the ravages of the Hundred Years' War. Successive alterations can be seen on the north wall, which features a buttress and a blind bay from the first phase of construction, as well as Gothic-style bays and massive buttresses. At the east portal, above the Gothic bay, a small opening can be seen, a defensive element for the guards protecting the town during times of unrest from the arms room located in the attic of the nave. It is the only church in the Haute-Vienne region to feature the Benedictine plan, characterized by a chevet with five staggered chapels. Restored, it is now open to the public.

The René Baubérot Museum in Châteauponsac is dedicated to local history. This "Musée de France" is housed in a former priory dating from the late Middle Ages. It exhibits prehistoric and Gallo-Roman archaeological collections, as well as sculptures and objets d?art, testifying to the region?s built and religious heritage. It also showcases rural and middle-class life in Limousin in the 19th and 20th centuries, with themes such as fashion, crafts, agriculture and daily life. A collection of minerals completes the museum's collection. Each year, a new exhibition is presented in the museum's annex, the "Maison du Terroir".

Châteauponsac, aptly nicknamed the Pearl of the Gartempe, is home to many treasures forged over the centuries. Strolling through the narrow streets of this fortified town, built on a rocky spur between the Gartempe and Semme rivers, history and old stone enthusiasts will discover medieval monuments (Faubourg du Moustiers with its 15th and 16th century houses, Benedictine priory...) and an 18th century town house. There are two panoramic views of the town and the steep Gartempe valley. One of these panoramas was chosen to illustrate the credits of the France 3 TV series "Un village français". A must-see when visiting Châteauponsac is the Musée René Baubérot, one of France's most interesting ethnographic museums.

As the Gartempe flows through the Haut Limousin region from Val d'Oire sur Gartempe to Châteauponsac, a number of hiking trails have been set up to explore the area. What's more, a number of prestigious towns have sprung up along the banks of the tumultuous Gartempe, or have been built on a rocky spur. Châteauponsac, nicknamed "the Pearl of the Gartempe", is the most representative example. Numerous studies have been carried out on this river as part of the salmon plan. Part of the river benefits from a prefectoral biotope protection order to preserve the Atlantic salmon, the river's emblematic fish.

Spanning the Gartempe to the south of Châteauponsac, the "Roman" bridge invites you to step back in time. Despite its evocative name, the bridge does not date back to Gallo-Roman times, although it does retain a few discreet traces of this period, such as the re-used ancient stones and its proximity to an ancient Roman road. The present structure was erected in the early 17th century on the foundations of an 11th-century bridge, built by the monks who also built the church. The bridge itself is the successor to an earlier footbridge, probably made of wood, used in Gallo-Roman times. A true witness to local history, this bridge of character blends legends and heritage, and today offers a charming crossing to and from Saint-Pardoux, in the heart of soothing natural surroundings.

From the top of the Saint Martial hill, you can admire the village of Châteauponsac, the Pearl of the Gartempe. This charming village in the Haut Limousin region stretches out before your eyes, perched on its rocky spur. From here, you can make out the Faubourg du Moustier, Châteauponsac's emblematic street district, to the south of the church of Saint Thyrse, which overlooks it, as well as the terraced gardens, formerly cultivated, at the foot of which lies the Gartempe river. Near Létrade lies a mysterious rock called the "stone of judgment or sacrifice" because of its peculiar shape. In fact, the feldspar, which is more abundant on certain parts of this granite rock, has disappeared over the centuries, leaving cavities reminiscent of basins dug by man to receive the animals that were sacrificed, and gutters to allow the blood to drain away? Even today, this stone is well known to the châtelauds, and its legend is perpetuated from decade to decade. You can discover it by following the Létrade hiking trail.

Easily accessible, the leisure runs benefit from 3 rainbow trout releases a year by the federation. These sites, broken down on site, enable young and old alike to enjoy their favorite pastime (please note that fishing is closed during releases). In the Châteauponsac AAPPMA sector, the course extends over 1.8 km along the Gartempe (2nd category for fish). Fishing with spoons, lures, livebait and dead fish is prohibited until the opening of the pike season).
