La Vallée de la Gartempe

The Gartempe Valley offers a diversity of landscapes, from steep-sided valleys to moors and forests. As the Gartempe flows through the Haut Limousin region from Val d'Oire sur Gartempe to Châteauponsac, a number of hiking trails have been set up to explore the area. What's more, a number of prestigious towns have sprung up along the banks of the tumultuous Gartempe, or have been built on a rocky spur. Châteauponsac, nicknamed "the Pearl of the Gartempe", is the most representative example. Numerous studies have been carried out on this river as part of the salmon plan. Part of the river benefits from a prefectoral biotope protection order to preserve the Atlantic salmon, the river's emblematic fish.
