Cité de caractère typiquement limousine, Châteauponsac est située sur un site naturel protégé, qui domine les vallées de la Gartempe et de la Semme. De l'église Saint-Thyrse en passant par le faubourg du Moustier, la voie romaine, les maisons anciennes, tout invite à la découverte.

L'église Saint-Thyrse possède une architecture à la fois romane et gothique. Elle possède une nef à bas-côtés, un transept saillant, un clocher de croisée... Elle a été Classée aux Monuments Historiques en 1910. Construite au XIème siècle par des moines bénédictins. Après des destructions dues à la Guerre de 100 ans, elle fut restaurée dans le style gothique.

Installé dans un ancien prieuré bénédictin du XIV siècle, le premier musée ethnographique du Limousin présente des collections de la vie quotidienne en Limousin aux XIX et XX siècles : cuisine limousine, chambre de petites filles, ateliers de menuisier, de vannier, de forgeron. Les reconstitutions vous feront découvrir les racines de la mémoire limousine.

Vous pouvez découvrir l'habitat rural de la région et admirer une inscription et une croix de Malte gravée sur le linteau d'une porte du bâtiment central.

Bien connue des pêcheurs, cette rivière vive et pressée, limpide et profonde, dévoile son caractère sauvage. Son cours impétueux passe de gorges encaissées à des milieux de prairies favorables à une biodiversité variée. Le saumon d'atlantique y est présent grâce à un plan de réintroduction.

The René Baubérot Museum in Châteauponsac is dedicated to local history. This "Musée de France" is housed in a former priory dating from the late Middle Ages. It exhibits prehistoric and Gallo-Roman archaeological collections, as well as sculptures and objets d?art, testifying to the region?s built and religious heritage. It also showcases rural and middle-class life in Limousin in the 19th and 20th centuries, with themes such as fashion, crafts, agriculture and daily life. A collection of minerals completes the museum's collection. Each year, a new exhibition is presented in the museum's annex, the "Maison du Terroir".

Châteauponsac, aptly nicknamed the Pearl of the Gartempe, is home to many treasures forged over the centuries. Strolling through the narrow streets of this fortified town, built on a rocky spur between the Gartempe and Semme rivers, history and old stone enthusiasts will discover medieval monuments (Faubourg du Moustiers with its 15th and 16th century houses, Benedictine priory...) and an 18th century town house. There are two panoramic views of the town and the steep Gartempe valley. One of these panoramas was chosen to illustrate the credits of the France 3 TV series "Un village français". A must-see when visiting Châteauponsac is the Musée René Baubérot, one of France's most interesting ethnographic museums.

The 3-star Gartempe campsite, open from April to November, is located in Châteauponsac, a charming little Haute-Vienne village nestled in the heart of the Limousin region, 40 km from Limoges.
