For many years, the link between nature and man has been an essential element in the economic development of the region, and this has been maintained to this day. > La Londe les Maures The Maures in the territory of Hyères were described as "forêts gastes" in the 17th century. The Norman origin of the name La Londe, "lund", means clearing, cleared forest. In order to exploit its resources and cultivate this land suitable for agriculture, man had to develop it. The first representatives of the commune, which was born in 1901, felt that "les Maures" deserved to be named after it, as it gained in value during the 19th century. It is emblematic of the importance of the forest, which covers 75% of the territory, with wooded areas right up to the seashore. > Bormes les Mimosas The name suggests the important place that trees have always held in the minds of the village and its inhabitants. Bormes is associated with an emblematic tree, the Mimosa, but its plant palette also includes remarkable trees and exotic species. In exchange for their maintenance and respect, this forest and these trees have provided a living for entire families. After the Armistice of June 1940, defeated, France collaborates with the Third Reich. Following the Allied landing in North Africa and the scuttling of the French fleet in the port of Toulon, in November 1942, General de GAULLE in 1943 tasked General GIRAUD, to reorganize in North Africa, a French army with American material support. The Allies imagine to fight the occupation troops by the North (Operation OVERLORD in Normandy) and the South (Operation DRAGOON in Provence). The coast of the Moors (la côte des Maures) appears then as the only place likely to escape the coastal batteries of the Toulon area. Two months after the landing of Normandy on the 6th of June of 1944, the Allies get the green light. On the night of August 14 to 15 in 1944, the African commandos, the first French soldiers on the soil of Provence, stormed Cape Negro, the naval assault group, the Esquirol point, the Canadians and American rangers the Golden Islands. American parachutists are dropped in the plain of Muy. On the morning of August 15th, American divisions land at Cavalaire; for eight days, those of the Army of Africa land in a continuous flow on the beaches of Cavalaire, Dramont, Nartelle to liberate the occupied towns and villages in Var. A walk between the village and the seaside along many vineyards. It can be used by all (mountain bikes, gravel bikes, VTC) and combines the Annamites promenade with the Garenne promenade. You will enjoy this complete tour of the commune thanks to the La Garenne and Annamites walks. You will also take part in the coastal cycle route. This easy walk will allow you to discover all the landscapes of La Londe: village, vineyards, hills, beaches and port. Ready? Then saddle up! Your walk starts in the town centre from Avenue Clémenceau, head west to pick up the coastal cycle route over 1 km. Arrive at the Garenne roundabout, cross the road to take the promenade of the same name. Head south towards the sea! You will then walk along the vineyards in the shade of the holm and cork oaks. You can then admire the view of the Vieux Salins d'Hyères and its pink flamingos. Pass along the campsites towards the Bastidon pine forest. There you are, the sea is there! Head east, towards the port and Miramar beach. A small diversions behind the Capitainerie (harbour office) allows you to cross to the other side of the Maravenne rainwater channel. Walk along the quay then follow the seafront to the Argentière pine forest. It's time to head back towards your starting point, via the Annamites promenade, which is particularly shaded under the pines! A walk in the heart of the Massif des Maures to discover the largest dolmen in the Var. This hike begins in the Pansard valley, an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and historical riches of the Maures massif. From the first climbs, you'll be immersed in typical Mediterranean vegetation, with arbutus, heather, rockrose and cork oak, typical of the maquis. The route takes you to the Gaoutabry dolmen, the largest megalith in the Var and an impressive testimony to prehistoric times. This listed site is surrounded by an enclosure, which you can cross to get a close-up view of the remains of this funerary structure. This walk will also take you through the vineyards and allow you to admire the pretty views over the sea, La Londe les Maures, the Salins d'Hyères and the Golden Islands. At the end of the route, the walk will take you to the hamlet of Notre-Dame-des-Maures. Did you know? The dolmen is a collective tomb dating from the Neolithic period and is listed as a Monument Historique. The presence of this edifice suggests the past existence of a community with strong beliefs in the cult of the dead. A mountain bike or gravel bike route in the heart of the Massif des Maures to discover the largest Dolmen in the Var. Take advantage of the panoramic views of the Maures massif and Notre Dame des Anges on the hillside as well as the Golden Islands and the Giens peninsula on the sea side. At the top of a small sunny hill this loop in the heart of the Maures massif will delight all nature lovers. Discover the secrets of the Dolmen de Gaoutabry, its magnificent panorama, and the very special vegetation of the Provençal maquis. Start from the free car park at the foot of the Notre Dame des Maures track. Take the DFCI track - Notre Dame Des Maures / Dolmen de Gaoutabry which rises slowly through the vineyards of the Maures. Follow the direction of the Dolmen and continue to the top of the hill to reach an open area. A little more effort and you will arrive at the prehistoric site from where you can observe the panorama of the Maures with, among other things, the relay at the top of Notre Dame des Anges, the Coudon, the Mont Faron. Once you have taken a short nature break, continue on a wider track, and after a few hundred metres, observe the panorama of the Iles d'Or and the Giens peninsula to the south and west. Continue your descent to reach the vineyards and olive groves. You will cross the hamlet of Notre Dame des Maures, then take a path along the vineyards that will lead you back to your starting point. The Committee of the French Remembrance of La Londe les Maures, with the support of the municipality, proposes a free path that recalls the occupation of the village from 1942 to 1944, the commitment and the sacrifice of its inhabitants and its liberation on August 17, 1944. Two panels at the East and West entrances of the city, 5 lecterns and 2 wall plaques located in different places of the town, constitute a memory trail in tribute to the French and American soldiers and the twenty-two Londais "Dead for France" during the Second World War. The project that was inaugurated on August 17, 2019, obtained the label of "75th anniversary of the landing and the Liberation" created for the occasion by the Ministry of the Army.

The “Painter’s Trail” lets you follow the steps of artists who have settled in the district for some time. This path will remind you of several important characters from the neo-impressionism period (1892-1926) from Theo Van Rysselberghe and Henri-Edmond Cross to famous writers such as André Gide and Emile Verhaeren. You will be able to find copies of their paintings on easels, all along the 2.50km path (1.5 miles). This walk can be carried out in 2 hours (easy pace).

COMMUNITIES CROSSED: Pierrefeu-du-Var, Puget-Ville, Collobrières, La Londe-les-Maures START OF THE ROUTE The hike starts from the car park behind the archery park. SIGNAGE: ORANGE To get to the car park, take the D14 towards Collobrières. Turn right coming from Pierrefeu, direction Tir à l'Arc. The car park is located just behind the archery. Start by taking the small winding path on the right of the car park to join the RD and head for the hamlet of La Portanière. After crossing the RD 14, take the Chemin de Maraval for 1.4 km, then follow the arrow post n°49B, direction Collobrières Village. Your journey begins with the discovery of small typically Provençal hamlets, before leading you to the Peyriers track and its oak forest. At the arrow post n°51B, follow Collobrières Village. After passing in front of the Plaine Longue reservoir, get your calves ready because it starts to climb for about 4 km. You then arrive at the Baudisson hunters' hut where you can take a well-deserved break. Follow the arrow post n°55 "Cabane Baudisson" towards Collobrières Village. Downhill enthusiasts will appreciate the next 5 km which will provide them with great sensations, on a partly stony track, with a ford crossing, to arrive at the entrance of Collobrières village. Don't forget to taste the famous marrons glacés and other chestnut-based delicacies! After your gourmet break, retrace your steps towards the firemen's car park and follow the arrow post n°40C "La Capelle", towards Pierrefeu la Portanière, by "le grand Gageai". After the second arrow post, always follow Pierrefeu la Portanière by "le grand Gageai". Then go up the Rieille track for 5.5 km passing by the lake of Camp Bourjas, rich in various species of fish such as perch, roach, pike-perch... Come on, courage! At the arrow post n°39 "Valcros d'Aumeran", direction Baisse du Castellas, there are only 12 km left before the return journey. Enjoy riding on this great track with a breathtaking view of the coastline and the forest of the Massif des Maures. The last kilometre will be the opportunity to accelerate and to jump a few small bumps on the edge of the Issemble track, at about 650 m from the arrow post n°47 "Issemble Beaussenas", direction Pierrefeu la Portanière

In La Londe les Maures, facing the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros Located at the tip of the rocky spur of the Argentière and Pellegrin beaches, in a totally protected area. The coastal underwater world can be discovered on the surface, with fins, mask and snorkel by anyone who can swim. By following the numbered buoys equipped with handrails you will discover the underwater panels presenting the ecosystem. At depths ranging from 0 to 4 metres, there is a wide variety of underwater landscapes (posidonia meadow, cymodocae, rocks, sand, scree...), inhabited by numerous species of fish, molluscs, crustaceans, starfish... The posidonia meadow: this is not a seaweed but a plant with marine flowers. Posidonia plays a very important role in fixing the sandy bottom, thanks to its roots which form a sort of barrier called the "matte" when they mix with the sediments. A real "lung" of the Mediterranean, this plant has been protected since 1988. The underwater trail can be explored on your own from June to September, following the numbered buoys. To the west of Miramar beach in La Londe les Maures, the Bastidon pine forest extends over 19 hectares of maritime pines. An exceptionally fragile preserved area, on the seafront under the protection of the Conservatoire du Littoral. Upstream from the coastal path and downstream from agricultural land, this 19-hectare natural area, mainly made up of pinion pines, is an exceptional preserved site between the Pansard campsite and the Baie des Isles residences. Its name testifies to the fact that it was once attached to the Bastidon wine estate, which belonged to Henry Potez, a great pioneer of the aeronautics industry. Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, classified and protected since 1990, it is managed and maintained by the commune. Since 2017, thinning by cutting pine trees has allowed young oaks to grow and the herbaceous and shrub layer to recover. Regeneration is also ensured by the installation of ganivelles. From September to June, the site is maintained through eco-pasturing by donkeys, which encourages the diversification of the vegetation by eliminating certain invasive grasses and contributes to the natural fertilisation of the soil. Next to the pine forest, a reed bed and wet meadows complete the range of habitats and enrich the landscape diversity of this site.

The landing of Allied troops in North Africa on November 8th, 1942 resulted in the invasion of the Free Zone. Italian troops settled all over the Mediterranean coast. The Germans occupying the rest of the territory. On December 15th, 1942, a detachment of the 7th Lupi di Toscana Infantry Division under Colonel Bellucci settled at Château de la Pascalette and Désirade. Frieze horses and barbed wire were laid by the sea and the occupants installed concrete shelters and pyramids (tetrahedrons) at the Pansard bridge and Oswald Street to control the entrance and exit of the village. Italian soldiers commit acts of robbery and are denounced by the inhabitants. Their command does not tolerate these behaviours and the carabinieri put an end to these practices. However, the situation in Italy is deteriorating. On July 25th, 1943, the High Council of the Italian fascist forced Mussolini to resign. On September 5th, the Lupi di Toscana division is about to leave La Londe. But the Germans invested the Pascalette and Désirade. They hunt down and take prisoners of their former allies who are grouped together at the Maravenne estate. These Italian soldiers will be used as labour for the construction of the seaside blockhouses, then transferred to a camp in Pignans. The German occupation and the resistance On September 5th, 1943, the Italians withdrew in disorder. On September 8th, Italy surrendered. The 1st battalion of the 198th Wehrmacht infantry regiment was made up of Armenians from the Ost Légion, occupying the village and installing the "Kommandantur" at the Château de la Pascalette. An Austrian 77-gun was put into battery in front of the sea. Italian soldiers who remained on the spot were taken prisoner and used to organize the defence points. The occupants create fear and put a lot of pressure on the population. Workers from the Bormette factory are sent to Germany as part of the Compulsory Labour Service (STO). Many managed to escape to join the maquis. Two of them, OSWALD and RIVAULT, lost their lives. The liberation committee set up will be made up of seven of these shadow fighters. Unlike the Normandy landing (Operation OVERLORD), the resistance was put on alert and used before the Provence landing, particularly inland. The numerous blows of hands, sabotage, destruction of railway and communication lines disrupted the defences and caused any retreat to the occupying troops. The low rate of human losses for the landing alone compared to that of Normandy attests to this. The Nazis concentrated most of their resistance around the ports and there the fighting was fierce and deadly. The Allied staff planned two months to reach Marseille, it will only take 15 days for Provence to be liberated. Marcel KAFI, 17 years old, is required at the Château de la Pascalette. He must prepare defensive sites and clean the surroundings of the bunkers built under the pines. A few months before the landing, he was approached by the resistance to steal gunpowder. For several days he fulfilled his mission. Quickly suspected, he was rescued by the gendarme CRESPIN who led him to the Font de la Truie aux Borrels; guided by the resistance fighters he walked for three nights, with other young people from Hyeres and Landes and hid in a farm near the Garde-Freinet waiting for the landing. On August 18th, on the beach of Pardigon in Cavalaire, he joined the 4th Senegalese riflemen's regiment (4° RTS). He participated in the liberation of Solliès-Pont, La Farlède, La Valette and Toulon with the 9th Colonial Infantry Division (9th DIC). He was wounded in Delle (Belfort territory) on November 18th, 1944. Two months later he resumed fighting as far as the Black Forest. From 1948 to 1962 he pursued a career as a non-commissioned officer in the colonial parachute battalions in Indochina where he was again wounded and in Algeria under the command of a certain Colonel DUCOURNAU.

Armoured stone boundary marker used to demarcate old properties Sandstone bollard, attached to the wall of a river bank, with a bas-relief coat of arms on two opposite sides. On one side, a coat of arms identified as that of the Agoult-Pontevès, two of the oldest and most illustrious families of Provence, established in the Hyères region from the 16th century. On the opposite side, a shield representing two greyhounds, whose identification remains enigmatic. Restoration work in 2016 revealed the opposite side and the coat of arms. Recognised as an archaeological feature on the national archaeological map.

Pierre MAZIERES born on January 30th, 1918 in La Londe. He joined Commander DOR in August 1944 to form an FFI air unit. Warrant Officer of Bombardment Group 1/31 "Aunis". He performs several bombing missions. On November 13th, 1944, at the start of a reconnaissance mission whose objective is the bombardment of the Royan pocket, his plane, a Junkers 88, knows a mechanical problem and crashes in Colomiers (Haute Garonne). Pierre MAZIERES was 26 years old. He was married with two young children. By decree of February 25th, 1945, the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre with Palm are awarded to him posthumously. Pierre RIVAULT born May 6th, 1920 in Tours He was a worker at the Bormettes factory. To escape the STO (forced labour department), he left the village in front of the German occupation and joined the maquis in March 1943 under the No. 61029. Under the name of Bibbia (Bibi), he follows camp Faïta and becomes head of the Santerre detachment at Brue Auriac (83). After blowing up an ammunition depot, he rescued his attacked detachment on January 16th, 1944. He was the chief of the maquis VENTURUCCI, who was one of the victims of the massacre of January 2nd, 1944 in Signes (Var). He leads several sabotages or attacks in this department and then in the Var sector of Ginasservis and La Verdière under the name of "James". June 20th, 1944, commander of the 13th company he leads several ambushes in the Valley of the Asse and organizes a parade on July 14th, 1944 in Barrême. Taken prisoner by the Nazis with nine other FTPF (Maverick and French partisan), he is tortured, horribly mutilated, then shot with his comrades at the edge of the Asse de Blieux, small torrent located at the place said Tuilière, the bridge of Maurelière in the municipality of SENEZ (04) July 20th, 1944 at the age of 24 years. His body was only identified in 1945 and his name transcribed on the registers of the civil status of this small town. Since February 9th, 1945, this Bormettes place bears his name. (Source : Departementale’s Archives) Ubaldo SANGES born on November 9th, 1915 in Genoa, Italy. As a quarter master mechanic, he disappears in the explosion of the torpedo boat "La Railleuse" off Casablanca in Morocco, March 23rd, 1940 at the age of 25 years. He is missing and then quoted to the order of the Army Corps by order No. 75 of February 4th, 1952 for the following reason: "Gloriously fallen for France at his combat outpost." This quote includes the awarding of the 1939-1945 War Cross with gilt star and the posthumous military medal. Léonard TURC born on April 2nd, 1918 in La Londe. Seaman defender of anti-air defense, quartered in a powder magazine in the arsenal of Toulon who was victim of emanations. He contracted a respiratory disease and died at St. Anne's Hospital in Toulon May 16th, 1940 at the age of 22.

General Paul DUCOURNAU -1910 – 1985 The 1st African commando under the orders of Captain DUCOURNAU seized the Cap Nègre on the night of August 14th-15th, 1944, after destroying the German batteries. The commandos liberated Le Lavandou on the 16th, Bormes on the 17th and reached La Londe in the evening of August 17th alongside the soldiers of the 3rd American Infantry Division. On August 18th, 1944, the group of African commandos crossed the Pansard, invaded the Château de la Pascalette, the seat of the Kommandantur abandoned by the Germans, and reached the level crossing where the American tanks were first fired from the 15-cm batteries of the KRIEGSMARINE of the Mauvanne battery. The 1st commando was sent for reconnaissance by Colonel BOUVET. Captain DUCOURNAU and his commandos seized the blockhouses in a heroic manner but with heavy casualties. Of the 60 commandos, 5 were killed and 25 wounded. 50 enemies were wounded or killed. The 100 survivors were taken prisoner. Corporal Jackie BOISDRON, 20 years old young Frenchman from North Africa, first killed in Mauvanne, rests in the municipal cemetery of La Londe. Decorated in the Ile d'Elbe, he was the youngest military medalist in France. The wounded French and German soldiers and prisoners were gathered at the cooperative cellar before being evacuated to the fort of Brégançon and Lavandou and then to Italy. The same day, the young man from Longe signed Joseph SPADA's commitment to the commandos. He was killed on November 20th during the attack on Mont Salbert at the place known as La Forêt in the commune of Châlonvillars (70) near the village of Cravanche (90). From La Londe to the evening of August 19th, 1944, the African commandos joined Cuers in the vehicles of the 1st DFL. They have just received the order to seize the Fort du Coudon which they will take on August 21st at 5 p.m. and open the road to the French troops for the Liberation of Toulon. In one week, Captain DUCOURNAU at the head of his commandos will have carried out three major actions. In his diary, General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny described the capture of Mauvanne as a fantastic achievement. After the Alsace campaign where he was wounded, surrounded and narrowly escaped certain death, Captain Paul DUCOURNAU entered Germany crossing the Rhine at Village Neuf. As a Lieutenant Colonel, he commanded the 3rd Colonial Parachute Battalion in Indochina (Lang Son), then the 25th Parachute Division in Algeria (Constantinois) during Operation Turquoise. In 1967, as Lieutenant General, Military Governor of Metz, he was seriously wounded during an inspection, a helicopter blade accidentally ended an exemplary military career. He died in 1985.

Historic district with a concentration of remarkable sites and buildings from all periods of history. One of the oldest districts, which has probably been inhabited since the Iron Age with the establishment of an oppidum. This area, steeped in history, can be considered the historic heart of La Londe, with traces of human occupation dating back to Antiquity, perhaps even as far back as the Iron Age, and its architectural heritage: - Château des Bormettes, an agricultural bastide built between 1588 and 1642 by the Carthusian monks of La Verne, which is steeped in monastic architecture (bell tower, pediment engraved with religious symbols, large vaulted room housing the fittings of an oil mill converted into a wine storehouse). The first known wine estate in the area. Private site, open to the public on a guided tour. - Horace Vernet's château, built around 1860 as a late-life holiday home for Louis-Philippe's official painter, enlarged and decorated by Victor Roux, a wealthy financier from Marseille and concession-holder for the Bormettes mines. The château's keep tower was built by the architect Gaudensi Allar (architect of the Musée d'Art de Toulon) and decorated with polychrome ceramic bas-reliefs on the façade by the sculptor André Allar, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome. Private site, partly accessible only on guided tours. - Château neuf des Bormettes, a middle-class residence built in the 1890s, once owned by the Roux family. Private site, off-limits - Former industrial railway line, now used by the Annamites footpath - Coron-style workers' housing estate built between 1913 and 1920 to house the staff of the Schneider armaments factory. It is made up of 4 rows of similar dwellings of 3 types (semi-detached villas, houses and maisonettes in strips with a garden on one side and a courtyard on the other) as well as individual villas, built around two central squares, a village hall-theatre and a bar that are still in use, and a food cooperative. There is also a rectangular building housing the post office and telegraph, a circular building housing the electricity transformer and a water tower. A rare example of a coron in the Mediterranean, and still inhabited. - Schneider armaments factory, set up in 1912 to manufacture torpedoes, housing a 1,000m² brick workshop with overhead travelling cranes inside, covered by a metal framework and a sheds roof. This major Eiffel-style industrial building bears witness to the importance of this economic activity until 1993. Private site, not open to the public. - Remains of the longest chimney-tunnel of a lead smelter in Europe, built in 1897 over a length of almost 1 km on the slopes of a hill. It is the most impressive architectural reminder of La Londe's important mining activity. Built as an experiment to improve the quality of galena, it was abandoned in 1906 due to lack of profitability. Private site to which access is forbidden. - Remains of a castrum, a medieval fortified town (probably built on a Celto-Ligurian oppidum) occupied from the mid-13th to the 14th century at the latest. One of the oldest human settlement sites in the commune, possibly the first village. The archaeological site is located on private property, to which access is forbidden.

Eugène OSWALD was born on August 14th, 1925 in La Londe. His father, Jacques, is the village doctor. To escape the STO (forced labour department) he fled and joined the famous and glorious maquis of Ain. During an ambush on the occupying army from the top of a hill, he and three other Maquis were spotted by the Nazis overlooking their position. The method to punish the Maquis is strictly respected. After shooting them in the legs, the Nazis rushed to finish them off. Eugène OSWALD and two of his comrades from Haute Savoie were killed. The fourth one from the Ain dragged himself to a nearby wood and survived his injuries. A stele bearing the name of Eugène OSWALD and his two comrades’ is erected on the place where they perished in the commune of SONGIEU (01). Shot dead on July 13th, 1944 he was to be 19 years old. Pierre RIVAULT was born on May 6th, 1920 in Tours. Worker at the Bormettes factory, he left the village by jumping out of a truck and joined the maquis to escape the STO (forced labour department). Taken prisoner by the Nazis with nine other FTPFs (Maverick and French partisan), he was tortured, horribly mutilated, then shot dead with his comrades on the banks of the Asse de Blieux, a small stream located at the place called La Tuilière in the commune of SENEZ in the Alpes de Haute Provence on July 20th, 1944 at the age of 24. His body, found in a mass grave, was not identified until 1945 and his name was transcribed into the civil status registers of this small town. A square in the Bormettes district bears his name. Louis BUSSONE was born on July 30th, 1919 in La Londe. Maverick and French partisan (F.T.P.F). On the announcement of the arrival of the American and French soldiers who had landed on August 15th, 1944 on the Provençal coast, he sabotaged the firing system of the Pont du Maravenne. He then attempted a new sabotage of the device that the German soldiers had installed to destroy the Pansard bridge during their withdrawal. Surprised by an enemy patrol, he was shot near the cooperative cellar on August 17th, 1944 at the age of 25, as the first American and French soldiers approached the village.

Louis BUSSONE was born on July 30th, 1919 in La Londe. F.T.P.F (Maverick and French partisan). On August 17th, 1944 at 3 p.m., at the announcement of the arrival of the American and French soldiers who had landed on August 15th, 1944 on the Provençal coast, after having defused the explosive charges under the Maravenne bridge and facilitated the arrival of the liberating troops, he attempted to sabotage the device that the German soldiers had installed to destroy the Pansard bridge during their withdrawal. Surprised by an enemy patrol, he fled to his home but he was catched by the German soldiers that were chasing him. He was arrested and passed through the village with his hands on his head under the eyes of the villagers. He was shot on August 17th, 1944 at the age of 25 near the cooperative cellar by the head of the Kommandantur. The latter, taken prisoner by African commandos during the attack on the Mauvanne blockhouses, was shot dead by the village inhabitants in the evening of 18th August.

On August 12th, 1944, the elements of this unit, invested with their victory at Bir Hakeim, waited in Taranto harbour on several ships and continued to train for a landing that everyone knew was close. On August 15th the maps of the Provence coast are distributed; On the morning of August 16th, the ship's radio announced the landing. The commandos have established themselves on the soil of Provence and an American airborne division occupies the Argens Valley. At 5pm, the French coasts appear. Men have been waiting for this moment for 4 years. Cavalaire Bay is identified. It is in the hands of Franco-American paratroopers since the day before, who cleaned the coast like the African commandos between Le Canadel and Le Lavandou. A Divisional surgical team (Spears) has been detached in the forward guard and is accompanying the commandos. General BROSSET commanding the Division landed with the 2nd Brigade. On August 17th, the entire Division landed and gathered at the Valmer Cross. On August 18th, it took the direction of Hyères, placed under the command of General de LARMINAT who also headed the 9th Colonial Infantry Division and a group of commandos and shock battalions. On August 19th, it crosses La Londe. The marine riflemen of the SAVARY squadron branch off towards Les Borrels and Le Pas du Cerf to regroup at Domaine de la Clapière. From there they took the road to Pierrefeu to ensure the link between the other elements of the 1st DFL and the 9th D.I.C. which had liberated Collobrières. Pierrefeu was liberated, the marine riflemen joined the Domaine de la Clapière while waiting for news about Mont Redon before liberating La Crau. The other units headed for Hyères to relay the African commandos chosen to seize Mount Coudon after the capture of the Mauvanne blockhouses. The German defence zones are the main goals. The Golf Hotel, Costebelle, Mont Fenouillet in Hyères, Mont Redon in La Crau, Le Pradet and the Thouar hill in La Garde are the bastions where heavy fighting will cause enormous losses to the Division (298 men lost their lives there, more than 300 were wounded) before entering Toulon. N/B: the names of 117 of them are inscribed in front of the French Remembrance Stele in the Saint Honoré district (D.559) towards Le Lavandou.
