The first representatives of the commune, which was created in 1901, felt that "les Maures", which gained in value during the 19th century, deserved to add to its toponym. After the Armistice of June 1940, defeated, France collaborates with the Third Reich. Following the Allied landing in North Africa and the scuttling of the French fleet in the port of Toulon, in November 1942, General de GAULLE in 1943 tasked General GIRAUD, to reorganize in North Africa, a French army with American material support. The Allies imagine to fight the occupation troops by the North (Operation OVERLORD in Normandy) and the South (Operation DRAGOON in Provence). The coast of the Moors (la côte des Maures) appears then as the only place likely to escape the coastal batteries of the Toulon area. Two months after the landing of Normandy on the 6th of June of 1944, the Allies get the green light. On the night of August 14 to 15 in 1944, the African commandos, the first French soldiers on the soil of Provence, stormed Cape Negro, the naval assault group, the Esquirol point, the Canadians and American rangers the Golden Islands. American parachutists are dropped in the plain of Muy. On the morning of August 15th, American divisions land at Cavalaire; for eight days, those of the Army of Africa land in a continuous flow on the beaches of Cavalaire, Dramont, Nartelle to liberate the occupied towns and villages in Var. A walk between the village and the seaside along many vineyards. It can be used by all (mountain bikes, gravel bikes, VTC) and combines the Annamites promenade with the Garenne promenade. This easy walk will allow you to discover all the landscapes of La Londe: village, vineyards, hills, beaches and port. Ready? Then saddle up! Your walk starts in the town centre from Avenue Clémenceau, head west to pick up the coastal cycle route over 1 km. Arrive at the Garenne roundabout, cross the road to take the promenade of the same name. Head south towards the sea! You will then walk along the vineyards in the shade of the holm and cork oaks. You can then admire the view of the Vieux Salins d'Hyères and its pink flamingos. Pass along the campsites towards the Bastidon pine forest. There you are, the sea is there! Head east, towards the port and Miramar beach. A small diversions behind the Capitainerie (harbour office) allows you to cross to the other side of the Maravenne rainwater channel. Walk along the quay then follow the seafront to the Argentière pine forest. It's time to head back towards your starting point, via the Annamites promenade, which is particularly shaded under the pines! A walk in the heart of the Massif des Maures to discover the largest dolmen in the Var. This hike begins in the Pansard valley, an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and historical riches of the Maures massif. From the first climbs, you'll be immersed in typical Mediterranean vegetation, with arbutus, heather, rockrose and cork oak, typical of the maquis. The route takes you to the Gaoutabry dolmen, the largest megalith in the Var and an impressive testimony to prehistoric times. This listed site is surrounded by an enclosure, which you can cross to get a close-up view of the remains of this funerary structure. This walk will also take you through the vineyards and allow you to admire the pretty views over the sea, La Londe les Maures, the Salins d'Hyères and the Golden Islands. At the end of the route, the walk will take you to the hamlet of Notre-Dame-des-Maures. Did you know? The dolmen is a collective tomb dating from the Neolithic period and is listed as a Historic Monument. The presence of this structure suggests the past existence of a community with strong beliefs in the cult of the dead. Discover the secrets of the Dolmen de Gaoutabry, its magnificent panorama, and the very special vegetation of the Provençal maquis. Start from the free car park at the foot of the Notre Dame des Maures track. Take the DFCI track - Notre Dame Des Maures / Dolmen de Gaoutabry which rises slowly through the vineyards of the Maures. Follow the direction of the Dolmen and continue to the top of the hill to reach an open area. A little more effort and you will arrive at the prehistoric site from where you can observe the panorama of the Maures with, among other things, the relay at the top of Notre Dame des Anges, the Coudon, the Mont Faron. Once you have taken a short nature break, continue on a wider track, and after a few hundred metres, observe the panorama of the Iles d'Or and the Giens peninsula to the south and west. Continue your descent to reach the vineyards and olive groves. You will cross the hamlet of Notre Dame des Maures, then take a path along the vineyards that will lead you back to your starting point. The Committee of the French Remembrance of La Londe les Maures, with the support of the municipality, proposes a free path that recalls the occupation of the village from 1942 to 1944, the commitment and the sacrifice of its inhabitants and its liberation on August 17, 1944. Two panels at the East and West entrances of the city, 5 lecterns and 2 wall plaques located in different places of the town, constitute a memory trail in tribute to the French and American soldiers and the twenty-two Londais "Dead for France" during the Second World War. The project that was inaugurated on August 17, 2019, obtained the label of "75th anniversary of the landing and the Liberation" created for the occasion by the Ministry of the Army.

Come and ride in the heart of the Massif des Maures, between the oak and chestnut forests, to admire the breathtaking landscapes of the Var. COMMUNITIES CROSSED: Pierrefeu-du-Var, Puget-Ville, Collobrières, La Londe-les-Maures START OF THE ROUTE The hike starts from the car park behind the archery park. SIGNAGE: ORANGE To get to the car park, take the D14 towards Collobrières. Turn right coming from Pierrefeu, direction Tir à l'Arc. The car park is located just behind the archery. Start by taking the small winding path on the right of the car park to join the RD and head for the hamlet of La Portanière. After crossing the RD 14, take the Chemin de Maraval for 1.4 km, then follow the arrow post n°49B, direction Collobrières Village. Your journey begins with the discovery of small typically Provençal hamlets, before leading you to the Peyriers track and its oak forest. At the arrow post n°51B, follow Collobrières Village. After passing in front of the Plaine Longue reservoir, get your calves ready because it starts to climb for about 4 km. You then arrive at the Baudisson hunters' hut where you can take a well-deserved break. Follow the arrow post n°55 "Cabane Baudisson" towards Collobrières Village. Downhill enthusiasts will appreciate the next 5 km which will provide them with great sensations, on a partly stony track, with a ford crossing, to arrive at the entrance of Collobrières village. Don't forget to taste the famous marrons glacés and other chestnut-based delicacies! After your gourmet break, retrace your steps towards the firemen's car park and follow the arrow post n°40C "La Capelle", towards Pierrefeu la Portanière, by "le grand Gageai". After the second arrow post, always follow Pierrefeu la Portanière by "le grand Gageai". Then go up the Rieille track for 5.5 km passing by the lake of Camp Bourjas, rich in various species of fish such as perch, roach, pike-perch... Come on, courage! At the arrow post n°39 "Valcros d'Aumeran", direction Baisse du Castellas, there are only 12 km left before the return journey. Enjoy riding on this great track with a breathtaking view of the coastline and the forest of the Massif des Maures. The last kilometre will be the opportunity to accelerate and to jump a few small bumps on the edge of the Issemble track, at about 650 m from the arrow post n°47 "Issemble Beaussenas", direction Pierrefeu la Portanière

In La Londe les Maures, facing the islands of Porquerolles and Port-Cros Located at the tip of the rocky spur of the Argentière and Pellegrin beaches, in a totally protected area. The coastal underwater world can be discovered on the surface, with fins, mask and snorkel by anyone who can swim. By following the numbered buoys equipped with handrails you will discover the underwater panels presenting the ecosystem. At depths ranging from 0 to 4 metres, there is a wide variety of underwater landscapes (posidonia meadow, cymodocae, rocks, sand, scree...), inhabited by numerous species of fish, molluscs, crustaceans, starfish... The posidonia meadow: this is not a seaweed but a plant with marine flowers. Posidonia plays a very important role in fixing the sandy bottom, thanks to its roots which form a sort of barrier called the "matte" when they mix with the sediments. A real "lung" of the Mediterranean, this plant has been protected since 1988. The underwater trail can be explored on your own from June to September, following the numbered buoys. To the west of Miramar beach in La Londe les Maures, the Bastidon pine forest extends over 19 hectares of maritime pines. An exceptionally fragile preserved area, on the seafront under the protection of the Conservatoire du Littoral. Upstream from the coastal path and downstream from agricultural land, this 19-hectare natural area, mainly made up of pinion pines, is an exceptional preserved site between the Pansard campsite and the Baie des Isles residences. Its name testifies to the fact that it was once attached to the Bastidon wine estate, which belonged to Henry Potez, a great pioneer of the aeronautics industry. Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, classified and protected since 1990, it is managed and maintained by the commune. Since 2017, thinning by cutting pine trees has allowed young oaks to grow and the herbaceous and shrub layer to recover. Regeneration is also ensured by the installation of ganivelles. From September to June, the site is maintained through eco-pasturing by donkeys, which encourages the diversification of the vegetation by eliminating certain invasive grasses and contributes to the natural fertilisation of the soil. Next to the pine forest, a reed bed and wet meadows complete the range of habitats and enrich the landscape diversity of this site.

The landing of Allied troops in North Africa on November 8th, 1942 resulted in the invasion of the Free Zone. Italian troops settled all over the Mediterranean coast. The Germans occupying the rest of the territory. On December 15th, 1942, a detachment of the 7th Lupi di Toscana Infantry Division under Colonel Bellucci settled at Château de la Pascalette and Désirade. Frieze horses and barbed wire were laid by the sea and the occupants installed concrete shelters and pyramids (tetrahedrons) at the Pansard bridge and Oswald Street to control the entrance and exit of the village. Italian soldiers commit acts of robbery and are denounced by the inhabitants. Their command does not tolerate these behaviours and the carabinieri put an end to these practices. However, the situation in Italy is deteriorating. On July 25th, 1943, the High Council of the Italian fascist forced Mussolini to resign. On September 5th, the Lupi di Toscana division is about to leave La Londe. But the Germans invested the Pascalette and Désirade. They hunt down and take prisoners of their former allies who are grouped together at the Maravenne estate. These Italian soldiers will be used as labour for the construction of the seaside blockhouses, then transferred to a camp in Pignans. The German occupation and the resistance On September 5th, 1943, the Italians withdrew in disorder. On September 8th, Italy surrendered. The 1st battalion of the 198th Wehrmacht infantry regiment was made up of Armenians from the Ost Légion, occupying the village and installing the "Kommandantur" at the Château de la Pascalette. An Austrian 77-gun was put into battery in front of the sea. Italian soldiers who remained on the spot were taken prisoner and used to organize the defence points. The occupants create fear and put a lot of pressure on the population. Workers from the Bormette factory are sent to Germany as part of the Compulsory Labour Service (STO). Many managed to escape to join the maquis. Two of them, OSWALD and RIVAULT, lost their lives. The liberation committee set up will be made up of seven of these shadow fighters. Unlike the Normandy landing (Operation OVERLORD), the resistance was put on alert and used before the Provence landing, particularly inland. The numerous blows of hands, sabotage, destruction of railway and communication lines disrupted the defences and caused any retreat to the occupying troops. The low rate of human losses for the landing alone compared to that of Normandy attests to this.
