A natural promontory of schist, cut by the Torteron, Dollée and Vire valleys, the rock controls this strategic meeting point of several roads and a navigable river. Charlemagne, who came to the region in 800 AD, is credited with building the first fortifications to protect the town of Saint-Lô from Norman invasion. From the highest part of the ramparts, the Tour des Beaux Regards, which rises to over 30 metres, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lower town, the Vire river and the surrounding villages.

From the top of the Beaux Regards tower, admire a vast panorama over the Vire and the houses along the river banks. The Poudrière tower, last relic of the citadel, where the start of the extremely thick wall closing off the Neufbourg side can still be seen.

Construction of the church of Notre-Dame began in the 13th century and progressed in stages according to the space available in the highly urbanised enclosure. The 15th-century architects added so much majesty to this stone structure dominating the upper town, that it is often referred to as a cathedral. At the meeting point between the second north side-aisle and the ambulatory, both built by Geoffroy Herbert, Bishop of Coutances (1488-1510), an external pulpit adds a delicately flamboyant touch, recalling those seen in Brittany (Vitré, Guérande, and Nantes): it was intended for the announcements of civil jurisdiction acts by the Bishop of Coutances, who was also Baron of Saint-Lô. The pulpit was used for the outdoor sermons given by Saint Jean-Eudes (1642, 1663, 1675-1676) and Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (1714), who were thus able to preach to the crowds that gathered in the courtyard of the episcopal palace. In his book “Things Seen”, Victor Hugo tells us that the external pulpit was scheduled for realignment by the town planning scheme (1863). He also sketched the pulpit which, thanks to him, was saved from demolition.

As you will have understood, this is Madame aux fourneaux and Monsieur en salle - and it still works just as well! The generous menu shows how well the chef knows his subject: the meats and fish are well chosen and most often proposed in a bistronomic version that you wouldn't expect here. It is original (often) and tasty (always). Note that the products are local and home-made. Knowing a success that has never been denied, the place, which continues on its way in a good mood, is a must in the city, and even in the Saint-Lawrence area. From 1 to 6 people I welcome you into my charming house, dating from 1592. Stables of the castle that were in the park next door, it was transformed into a dwelling house in the early 80s. It has 5 bedrooms: 2 are for rent, a 3rd can be used occasionally. So I receive from 1 to 4 people. I can go up to 6 visitors, if it is a group or a family (2 bedrooms with a 140cm bed, 1 bedroom with 90cm twin beds) because there is only one bathroom and only one WC, on the landing. The other two bedrooms are private and accessible by a second staircase. Meals (brought by you) and breakfast are taken in the dining room or outside on sunny days. A small refrigerator, a microwave and crockery are at your disposal. The house is close to the shops and restaurants of Agneaux, a quiet little town in a loop of the Vire. The city center of Saint-Lô, the station, the cinema, the theater, some restaurants are within walking distance. Surroundings: swimming pool and horse riding in Saint-Lô, water sports 30km away (Agon-Coutainville). I am ideally located between North Cotentin, Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and the landing beaches. Welcome to hikers and cyclists! The towpath (greenway on which passes part of the Vélomaritime and the VéloWestNormandy) is less than 1km away. Cathy's home is referenced at the Malle Postale (luggage transport for hikers and cyclo-hikers). The bicycles are sheltered and safe in the garage (a power outlet is available there to easily recharge the batteries of the electric bicycles).
