A natural promontory of schist, cut by the Torteron, Dollée and Vire valleys, the rock controls this strategic meeting point of several roads and a navigable river. Charlemagne, who came to the region in 800 AD, is credited with building the first fortifications to protect the town of Saint-Lô from Norman invasion.
From the highest part of the ramparts, the Tour des Beaux Regards, which rises to over 30 metres, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lower town, the Vire river and the surrounding villages.
