Camping Le Mas des Sedaries: Explore Villefort's Natural Treasures

Built at the foot of Mont Lozère on the Regordane Way, Villefort has developed its own forms of architecture, which make use of both schist and granite. A few clarifications:• To reach Panels 5 (How the village is arranged) and 6 (Paris-Marseille train line), go up Rue du Chazalet and take the first lane on the right. Take a small path (GR 44) that climbs about 50 m to the viewpoint.• To get to Panel 13 (River network), continue along Impasse du Lavoir and take the first road on the left, which heads downhill to the river.

From the car park, take the large path heading due north into the beech forest. The path climbs gradually and enters a forest of creeping pines before arriving at the Col de l'Aigle pass. From the pass, continue due west on the track and then a stony path to reach the peak of Pic Cassini. From the summit, go back down to the Col de l'Aigle by the same route, and then take the path on the left that runs parallel the ridge and forms the limit between the cantons of Villefort and Le-Pont-de-Montvert. Go over a small grassy pass sprinkled with gentian flowers and, in the hairpin bend, go downhill on the track on the right. Walk through the beech forest, then the firs. In the hairpin bend, take the track again all the way down to Mas de la Barque.

The first part of the trail is contemplative with only the red wooden viewing frames placed along the path to highlight some key elements of the landscape. Then, 7 illustrated explanatory panels give information on the elements observed. P - At the start sign in the hamlet of Féreyrolles, take the path that climbs to the right. This path leads to a track, turn left, then 250m further on, turn right onto the canal path. Follow the chestnut trail signs. In this first section, continue straight on for 1km. With the 5 red frames, use your sense of observation to identify traces of human intervention in the landscape. At the “Sardoune” theme panel, the path continues downhill to a small road. Turn right and walk 300m. Go down the path on the left until you reach the canal. Turn left and you’ll see a sign marked “le Béal”. Cross the canal and continue along the path on the left. Walk through the chestnut orchards and then a meadow where there’s a third panel with a 19th century illustration of a landscape of the Borne valley. At the end of the meadow, continue on the track, turning left to reach another theme sign entitled “l’arbre à pain” (Europe’s version of the breadfruit tree). After 50m, take the road. To continue along the initial trail, take the road left then, at the crossroads, go right. Walk along this small road for 350m. (For the return trip, you can take the road on your right to get to the Geopark site. If you take this 600m detour, you’ll discover a geological curiosity – “balls” of polished granite that fell onto the riverbed several million years ago).  Take the path on the right to reach a chestnut orchard. Continue straight ahead on the path past the information panel “les châtaignes d'Ardèche”. At the end of the trail, take the road again and head left to return to the hamlet of  Féreyrolles. You can also carry straight on by following the road then taking a small path on your right. This additional 1.5km loop, which takes about half an hour, takes you past a goat farm. Cross the road when you get to the stone cross, climb up to the old canal and go left to return to Féreyrolles.

This mas (farm) with its astonishing architecture is the starting-point for a path that plunges into the very particular atmosphere of the Upper Tarn plain.

The Montselgues blockfield path makes its way through a wild landscape dominated by the mineral element : granite. This beautiful hike evokes granitic Britanny with a whiff of legend. First, take the road that goes north out of the village, in the direction of Teste Rouge and Pradon. After about 100 m, turn right on a stony path leading to la Borie, 2 km away. You will first have to confront a difference in height of 90 m uphill, then the equivalent douwnhill, and you will see how unlike those two slopes are. On the first part, you will not find any blockfields but, on the contrary, a quiet landscape, very green, with gentle shapes and a moderatly steep gradient. Stone buildings bear witness to old developments : the rocks and walls along the way, the cross, the small bridge, the calade (cobblestone path), the paving on the path made out of grey, pink, yellow granite stones... Once you reach the road leading to la Borie, follow it uphill on your left for about 100 m, then pass the tight bend of the road, leaving the shed on your left. After 20 m, the path leaves the road and passes between the two houses on the right to climb among rocks up to Petit Paris, perched on the top. Go through the hamlet. Just out of Petit Paris, a bench carved out of stone invites you to sit down for a while. The walk continues on a path lined with rocks. After 1 km, you will see on your right one of the most beautiful granite blockfields in the area. A natural treasure less unusual in Brittany or the Auvergne, not to mention the numerous places around the world where the old basement rises to outcrop, on every continent. 500 m after the blockfield, you will go through the Cayres hamlet, a toponym that could mean either angle or remote place. You can pick the meaning you like. Carry on after the farm and take the road (yellow markings) on your left, follow it to the end of the downhill gradient, then take the track suitable for vehicles in front of you towards the ridge. The way back to the village will take you on the ridge of one of the plateau de Montselgues' corrugations, first called Pierre plantée, then Serre de Teste Rouge. The word serre means, depending on the place, an elongate mountain or a high point with gentle or rounded slopes. Once on the road, at the pass, take the tarmacked road that goes directly down to Montselgues, your starting point.

Petite boucle autour du Luech dans une zone de faille entre schiste et granit, riche en minerais, près d'anciens sites miniers. Take the road for 1.5 km after the retirement home (maison de retraite).  At the fork, take the lower road, below Polimies, at the foot of La Fare mountain. Walk past 3 cypresses – trees traditionally planted in Cevenol cemeteries – then past a burned-down chestnut grove taken over by broom bushes. Cross the bridge over the Dreiléirède. After the bridge over the Rieutort, take the path that goes uphill to Soleyrols. In Soleyrols, at the fountain, follow the road on the left to the end, then take the narrow tarred lane below, go down a few steps, and walk past former orchards towards the torrent. Cross the Luech at the gué (ford). The path goes uphill in a steep and narrow valley between a low wall and, on the valley side, some standing stones. Use the ford to cross the Villaret and take the track that runs downstream along the Luech. The track joins up with the road to Castagnols. Go downhill for 1.2 km before taking the small path on the left into the undergrowth of a chestnut grove. Near the riverbanks of the Luech, there is an area maintained and fitted out for bathers. After crossing La Planche bridge, take the path on the left that goes back up to Vialas.

This beautiful hike takes you on the interpretive path of Naves, a typical village, to discover landscapes and the link between geological and human history. From the cemetery parking lot, the path starts on the right and climbs towards the Serre du Cocu (cuckold ridge) where a first stop will allow you to enjoy the Naves Cirques, and where you will find the first interpretive board about Jurassic limestone and marl. Continue on the path up to the reservoir above the cemetery. A new board is waiting for you. Continue on the path along the side of the Serre du Cocu. (new board on the Serre de Barre) up to a pass from which the view on the Chassezac Valley is stunning. At the crossways, turn right up to the Alauzas road where you will find stops 5 and 6, presenting the Orcières Fault and a stratigraphic cross-section. Follow the tarmacked road on your left up to the hamlet. On your way, admire the gorgeous chesnut grove (stop 7). At the hamlet, take the path on your left. Carry on straight ahead. Stop 8 is about terraces and water management on the slope. The path goes downhill towards Naves, first through a chesnut grove, then in a coniferous undergrowth. Lower, those plants give way to maquis (stop 9). After stop 10, devoted to karst, the path goes out of the woods onto an overhang above the Bourdaric Brook (be very cautious!). Continue leisurely your way down towards Naves (stop 11), while enjoying the sights on the village and Southern Ardèche. Take some time to tour Naves, a pleasant typical village with authentic narrow streets, then take the tarmacked road again down to the cemetery parking lot, your starting point.

Ce petit sentier familial conduit le visiteur à la découverte de hameaux cévenols: le Villaret et le Massufret, tout en surpomblant les gorges du Luech. Take the path that goes downhill from the car park. After 50 m, take the path on the right. At a fork, take the track on the left and, some 20 m further, the path on the right. Two granite boulders open the path that goes downhill between birches in a north-easterly direction. Above the village, take the track leading to Le Massufret. The track overlooks the Luech gorge with its sides of sheer jagged rock. It joins up with the Massufret road amidst former meadows now invaded by young ash trees, growing straight and close together. The road goes past a covered fountain, through the hamlet of Le Massufret with its schist houses with granite lintels, and a few ruins. As you leave the hamlet, take the track that leads back to the Col de la Baraquette.

This walk leads you on the draille du Languedoc (track for seasonal livestock migration) to the bends of the river Tarn, exploring the singular built heritage of this granite area. After the last farm built of granite, turn right as you exit the hamlet onto a paved oxcart track, which goes downhill through large fields. Ford the brook and go back uphill through the beech grove. Go straight ahead at the Col des Rouvières pass. Take the dirt path that joins up with the track before Les Bastides. It climbs through a spruce forest alongside a torrent, then joins up with a track: the draille du Languedoc. At Le Plo de la Nassette, which is the last intersection of drailles before Mont Lozère, take the GR 7-68 straight up the slope. At L'Aubaret, take the GR 7 towards the Pont du Tarn. A short detour leads you to the Pont du Tarn, which you can see through the pine trees. Turn left towards Felgerolles. Before a bend in the river, the path leaves the Tarn behind (on your left) to skirt the Serre de Escoroborats ridge, and joins up with a forestry track that goes downhill to Troubat. Go downhill on the road for 300 m and then take the shortcut across the fields that goes back uphill to Masméjean.

En passant par la draille du Languedoc et la ligne de partage des eaux entre Atlantique et Méditerranée, ce parcours, au pied du Bougès, offre de belles vues sur les cévennes, le massif de l'Aigoual et le mont Lozère. Head downhill on the road that goes through the hamlet of St-Maurice-de-Ventalon. Cross the bridge and go back uphill above the isolated house opposite the hamlet. Take the path on the right that climbs above the broom bushes to an enclosure for horses (please close the gates) before coming out onto a road. Cross the road to get to the Col de Malpertus pass. Take the forestry track that forks right and goes uphill to the east into a private forest. Follow the track until it joins the draille, a large track that is also the GR 68 long-distance hiking-path and goes straight up to the Signal du Ventalon beacon. (Optional detour to the beacon with its viewpoint indicator). Head to the Croix de Berthel. Walk past the ruins and take the draille (also the GR7 and GR 68) to Plo de la Nassette. Take the first path on the right, which leads first through a forest and then over a broom heath on the south-facing slope. The path comes out at the temple by the side of the road.

Next is a lovely arbour offering protection from the sun when the shade of the centuries-old mulberry trees is insufficient. Breakfast and dinner served here. A little further on there is the boulodrome where you can test your skills at pétanque. The best teams can compete to win an appetizer on the House! A pool of 12 x 5 m will allow you to do a few laps, relax and freshen up after your muscles have been stretched by one or the other sports activities offered in the surrounding area. For a quieter time, you can wander through the rest of the garden where over 500 carefully chosen plants delight the senses. Or merely sit a while under an olive tree and enjoy the views across the roofs of the old village to the distant horizons.

On Thursdays, visitors can take a guided walk through the vineyards and learn more about the region’s emblematic vine variety, the chatus. These visits are free of charge and end with a tasting.

Located at an altitude of 605 m, Villefort developed as a one-street village alongside the Regordane Way (now known as Rue de l'Eglise and Rue de la Bourgade). In the 19th century, a main road was built through Villefort and became its main traffic artery. Today it is called Avenue des Cévennes.

From 1865 onwards, the P.L.M. (Paris-Lyon-Marseilles) Company constructed the railway line that the Cévenol train still uses to link Paris and Marseilles via Clermont-Ferrand, Alès and Nîmes. The line helped to open up the area and was thus a real asset for the towns located along its path in the Lozère. New occupations were created: P.L.M. employee (during construction) or dispatcher of local products (e.g. chestnuts from the Borne valley). But the disappearance of mule trains struck a blow at the local economy, in particular craftsmen and innkeepers.

Villefort's former market square, Place de l'Ormeau hosted Clédou market on Thursday mornings until the 1980s. The square teemed with smells and colours. Livestock, meat, vegetables, grains and chestnuts were sold here, especially in the 19th century. The lime tree on the square was planted on 11 November 1920 as a “victory tree” so that future generations might remember their ancestors' fight for freedom during the First World War. The Maison Chambon, with its double-archway entrance, has an inscribed lintel: Metre Iehan Martin 1595, flanked by a diamond shape and a heart.

Villefort dam, located a kilometre north of the village, was filled on 14 July 1964, creating an economic alternative to agriculture. Tourist activities developed: fishing, swimming and water sports. Local tourism is also founded on the canton's abundant natural heritage, with a great number of hiking trails, canyoning in the Chassezac gorge, skiing at the Mont Lozère ski stations, etc.

In 1900, sweet chestnuts were the main farm produce. The nuts of this so-called “bread tree” fed many families as well as their farm animals. Chestnut-growing is a year-round activity, but is especially busy at harvest time. Harvesters would meet in the evening for a brousillade (chestnuts roasted on a wood fire). When parts of the rural population left, many chestnut orchards were abandoned while others were cut down for their tannin to be extracted. Chestnut bleeding canker and chestnut blight, diseases caused by mushrooms, also killed off a great number of trees. Today, chestnut farming in the Cévennes is being revived with a focus on quality.

The town hall is a former private mansion of the 15th century, with a spiral staircase and ground-floor rooms with vaulted ceilings. The lintel behind the gate comes from a fortified house in the village of Bayard, which is now under the waters of the Lake. On the facade of the 16th century house opposite is a finely crafted mullion window. • The oldest house in the village is a listed monument and dates from the 14th century. It has Gothic windows and a pulley system once used to bring forage into the loft. • An archway giving onto an internal courtyard shows you mediaeval walls made from large regular blocks.• Two lintels bear Christ's monogramme: IHS, Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus saviour of mankind). One instance is followed by the inscription Ave Maria.

The architecture of Villefort's old buildings is typical for one-street villages:• the houses with the two vaulted porches were once inns, tradesmen's or artisans' shops: one of the porches was used to store merchandise, the other to display it;• the sculpted lintels above the entrances to some houses on Rue de l'Eglise and Rue de la Bourgade bear witness to the activities of former occupants;• several facades have handsome mullioned windows from the Renaissance. 

Villefort was embroiled in the religious wars of the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1629, Henri de Rohan besieged the village. Rue de la Bourgade was torched by the Huguenots. In the 17th century, town walls were built around Villefort, which were demolished between 1808 and 1813. During the French Revolution, heraldic shields recalling the Ancien Regime were chiselled off walls, testament to the locals' hatred of their lords. A cross on Place du Portalet is a reminder of the 1794 execution of a defiant priest from Saint-Frézal-d'Albuges. The First World War caused many local casualties. During the Second World War, Villefort was occupied by the Germans. A resistance movement nevertheless emerged in the area, consisting of many different groups. 

The Regordane Way linking Alès (Gard) and Luc (Lozère) is a section of the important route that connected Lower Languedoc and the Auvergne in the Middle Ages. It facilitated trade between the Mediterranean basin and parts of the Kingdom of France. The mule-drivers that used it – known locally as Régordans or Rigourdiers – transported oil, wine and salt. It was also a religious path, taking pilgrims called Romieux to Saint Gilles It was progressively abandoned in the 14th century, when the port at Marseille and the fairs in Lyon grew in importance. Ruts left by cartwheels can still be seen north of Prévenchères (between Le Thort and La Molette) and near Saint-André-Capcèze.

Local crafts first emerged in the Middle Ages. In the late 18th century, lead mining began in the area, affording farmers another source of income. A foundry was built upstream of the village. A century later, the attraction of industry and the city led to a rural exodus and the decline of trade and crafts.

At this level, under a high canopy, there is a fountain and access to all parts of the house. Then cross a small stone bridge that spans the lane, to gain access to the pool and gardens. As soon as you cross this little bridge, you will fall under the charm of this green haven of peace. You will first encounter a small covered seating area where you can to sit quietly enjoy a drink, read or just contemplate life – regardless of the vagaries of the weather. Next is a lovely arbour offering protection from the sun when the shade of the centuries-old mulberry trees is insufficient. Breakfast and dinner served here. A little further on there is the boulodrome where you can test your skills at pétanque. The best teams can compete to win an appetizer on the House! A pool of 12 x 5 m will allow you to do a few laps, relax and freshen up after your muscles have been stretched by one or the other sports activities offered in the surrounding area. For a quieter time, you can wander through the rest of the garden where over 500 carefully chosen plants delight the senses. Or merely sit a while under an olive tree and enjoy the views across the roofs of the old village to the distant horizons.
