Mausoleum, châteaux, chapel, farms, hamlets – so many sites steeped in a history that simply begs to be told... From the mausoleum in Lanuéjols, go uphill into the village and towards the church. Below the cemetery, go downhill on the right to the road. Cross it and take the farm track on the valley floor. Cross first La Prade brook and then the Vareilles road to reach Finiols. In that hamlet, turn right at the T-junction and go downhill to Le Boy. Here you join up again with the D 41, onto which you turn right for 300 m. Then take a track on the left going uphill to Chapieu. Before you arrive on the plateau, at the third hairpin bend, take the level track to reach the Château de Chapieu, 150 m ahead. Return to the track and go uphill to Chapieu farm, skirt its buildings and continue straight ahead to a forestry track. Turn right onto the track and walk to the Col de La Loubière. At the Col (pass), take the lane back downhill to Le Masseguin. In the hamlet, take the path that goes uphill on the left. A ridge path will lead you to St Geniès chapel. Continue on this path, which goes downhill all the way to the road. Turn right onto the road, and, in the hairpin bend, take the track. After 200 m, leave the track for a path on your left going downhill to Vitrolles. Return to Lanuéjols on the road.

The high plateau of the Planeze was formed by the lava flows from the Cantal Volcano. Today, the Planèze sees the revival of a local crop, the blonde lentils of Saint-Flour. From Saint-Flour, head towards Tanavelle and enjoy the 360° panoramic viewpoint over the Planèze, the Margeride and the Monts du Cantal. Continue towards Paulhac and Narse de Lascols, a protected area for migratory birds. The village of Bélinay, with its XIV century neo-Gothic chapel and its castle, is known as the jewel of the Épie valley. Follow the road to Col de Prat de Bouc at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal, the highest peak of the Monts du Cantal (1855 m). This outstanding natural site is ideal for walking and hiking as well as watching migrating birds and discovering the local fauna and mountain flora. Drive through the lovely village of Cézens and then head for Cussac and Saint-Amand’s Romanesque Church. Continue towards Neuvéglise and explore the small village of Orcières and the typical architecture of its houses. Suggested visit nearby: the vast Lanau reservoir and its water sports. At Sériers, drive along the “Megalithic Route” and discover the dolmens of Grand Bois and Table du Loup, witnesses to the Neolithic age. Additional sites are listed in the Megaliths Circuit information leaflet. In Les Ternes, you can admire the XV century feudal castle and its grounds. Drive back up towards Villedieu and visit Ribeyrevieille and Bouzentès, villages famous for their stone cutters.

In the 13th century Lagarde was Commandery of Knights templar. The little chapel in this village is the last remnant of this once important property. The castle of LA BORIE is a good example of military architecture of 15th century. It is private property and can not be visited. Panoramic view to the Tailladès valleys and the Truyère river.

To see: beside the road a memorial cross, called “Cross of the soldier”. 3 - In LES MAZES in front of a big farm house turn at right. The path crosses the wood and takes you to the departure point. Observe the fountain and the old stone cross with the Christ. Continue on foot in direction of Sainte-Marie. 1 - Take the path which descends opposite the church and follow the sandy way. 2 - Keep left and cross the wood. The path decends to the river Epie.

L’accès au sommet est relativement court, permettant une sortie facile à destination des habitants et curieux. Le site présente une charge religieuse, historique et matérielle forte. Its light, jagged silhouette has elevated it to the status of a true work of art. Clad in red, its elegance and technical finesse are enhanced by a spectacular lighting display. A technical achievement and the world's highest viaduct at the time of its completion, this colossal structure (564m long and 122m high) was a major event. This once-unthinkable project contributed to France's international influence. Its bold engineering is said to have directly inspired the design of the Eiffel Tower, built just five years later in 1889. Since 2017, this listed historic monument has been part of a European initiative aiming for UNESCO World Heritage recognition, alongside five other exceptional bridges. The meandering Truyère River snakes around the steep peak where the ruins of the XIIIth century feudal castle stand. You can walk the Way of the Cross from the small Saint-Illide’s Church up to the village of La Barge. Covered washhouse fed by the Lestende spring (62°), comprising 2 successive trays allowing a progressive cooling of the water. For a long time women went to wash their laundry in this part of the Remontalou where gaseous sources and clearances “warmed up” the water from the river. At the end of the nineteenth century, a first washing house was built but it was necessary to wait 1929 for the Amicale Parisienne des Enfants du Canton de Chaudes-Aigues to finance a covered washhouse fed by the Lestende spring (62°), comprising 2 successive trays allowing a progressive cooling of the water.
