The village of Praz sur Arly was originally made up of three hamlets, called "dîmeries": La Thona, Réon and the Pratz de Megève. The most populated was La Thona where the inhabitants quite logically built their farms on the Adret, the sunniest side of the valley. It was dependent on the Commune of Megève and its agricultural activity was limited to daily tasks indispensable for survival. Then in 1834, Praz declared its independence but only obtained it in 1869 because of problems related to the dividing up of the land. Nowadays the Tonnaz hamlet is one of Praz sur Arly's most important heritage sites and it will delight lovers of traditional regional architecture.

C’est l’histoire d’une croix qui a retrouvé la lumière et sa place au cœur du hameau de la Tonnaz après 225 ans d’attente, grâce à la mobilisation des habitants du hameau, de l’association « Praz atre koue e vorandre » et de la mairie de Praz-sur-Arly. A story that begins a very long time ago, around the year 1500, the estimated date of the construction of the chapel of La Thona (old spelling found in the archives). At that time, Praz was not a commune. Its hamlets depend on Megève and La Thona is the largest in the sector in terms of number of inhabitants. The chapel of La Tonnaz, as well as that of Bonne Fontaine (Flumet), will suffer a cruel fate on May 8, 1794: an irrevocable destruction, following the annexation of Savoy by France in 1792. The explanation? A suspicion of the practice of clandestine worship exercises as well as gatherings of assemblies hidden from the sight of municipal officers. Same thing for the other chapel, called Bonne Fontaine, located in the town of Flumet, which also served as a gathering place for the "fanatics" of these two towns. The municipality of Megève therefore had the order to destroy them. Citizen Mathieu Arvin-Bérod, a municipal officer, was appointed to oversee the execution of this decision.

Situated in the Commune of Flumet, on the border with Praz, on the road connecting the Christomet and the Tête du Torraz. It is a large brick building, 2 metres long and 3 metres high. The 4-sided roof is covered with sheet-metal and there is a wrought iron cross on the top. The building resembles a sentry-box. The walls surround a recess, and there is a holy water basin on the right hand side. A wrought iron gate protects the recess which contains a magnificent wooden Virgin and child. Water from a spring flows at the foot of the recess. The Virgin has been restored.

Hut-like oratory with large barrel vault ; recessed alcove framed by a type of grey marble and engraved with, at the top, the date 1850 and protected by a fine wrought-iron grill. Inside, a wooden statue (1m) of the Virgin with Child (held on left arm) ; at the foot of the statue an inscription: “Our Lady of Bonnefontaine pray for us” Interesting fact: In 1759, the historian Besson tells us, there used to be a chapel in the parish of Flumet which was devoted to the Holy Virgin and which was called Bonnefontaine. “Popular tradition has it that a monk walking alongside the stream that flows from the Bonne Fontaine went as far as its source and declared that the Holy Virgin wanted to be honoured at that spot. An oratory was built and was often rebuilt”. It was very famous throughout the region, attracting lots of pilgrims and renowned for the valuable favours obtained. “There were frequent pilgrimages to Notre Dame de Bonne Fontaine and this continues today during good weather, even if there are not so many. There are even some pilgrims who go when there is heavy snow, to ask the Virgin for some urgent grace”. “The whole parish of Flumet sometimes processes there, especially at the start of springtime. Throughout the area, during long winter evenings, families tell tales about the amazing favours received via the intercession of Our Lady and the beneficial properties of the water from the Bonne Fontaine.” The chapel was destroyed during the French Revolution and was not rebuilt, but later on (1850), an oratory was built from its ruins. “The existing oratory only dates back to 1850 and the statue which adorns it was solemnly inaugurated on 7 September 1851.” [extract from de “Notre Dame de Savoie” and historical facts of Abbé Grobel 1860]

Built in 1863 by Joseph Théodule Jond, this hut-like oratory contains a golden-painted wooden statue of the Holy Family. Statue of the Holy Family in gold-painted wood with the inscription “40 days of indulgence granted by Mgr Magnin to anyone who reciters a Pater, an Ave and an act of love to God 13-06-1863 – 17-06-1864”. Interesting fact : in June 1992, following works to strengthen the banks of the mountain stream, the oratory was demolished. New Oratory rebuilt in 1994, further downhill from the original.

A pretty mountain, overlooking Flumet, which probably got its name ("gâteau" means cake in French) from its “millefeuille” cake shape. It offers splendid views over the Mont-Blanc chain of mountains, the Beaufortain and Aravis… Viewpoint indicator allowing you to read the landscape 180 degrees around you. This is a solidly built white-rendered building, dating from 1866, with four-sided metal roof which is topped by a wrought-iron cross. A small font is on the right of a recessed alcove protected by a wrought-iron grill: “CMF 1867”. Inside, a golden plaster statue (60-70 cm) of the Virgin with a snake ; on either side of the Virgin is a cherub, and behind her, a golden sun with a dove ; on the altar covered by a white cloth, is a bronze statue of Christ, a small statue of the Virgin, a wooden frame with a faded inscription: “His Holiness Pope Pius IX grants 100 days of indulgences”, 4 superb glass cloches containing a religious vase made of porcelain. Interesting fact : “Resident of Flumet and Mayor of this commune, Marie- François Marin- Cudraz, is in the process of building an oratory in honour of the Immaculate Conception on her property, at the edge of the road, as requested by one of her daughters on her deathbed”.
