After skirting the Rhône-Sète canal between Aigues-Mortes and Le Grau du Roi, you're now off to the Mediterranean beaches, resorts and entertainment. ViaRhôna runs through the "20th century heritage" pyramids of La Grande Motte, then along the lido between sea and salt ponds, to the foot of the Palavas-les-Flots lighthouse, close to the city of Montpellier. Take the bridge over the Petit-Rhône. 3- Do not miss turning right towards S33. Walk 2 km and reach the Astouin hamlet. Leave on the left the Astouin Castle estate. 4 - Take a right on the intersection with the D38. Go forward for 500 m. Turn left and continue on the D38b towards Pioch-Badet. VARIANT: a shorter variant is possible by going straight on towards the Cabanes de Cambon to join the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. 5 - Turn left, on the D570, towards Pioch-Badet and the Cacharel road. Follow Pioch-Badet, cross the village and take the road to Cacharel Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and return to the starting point by the D85A, along the several ponds that you will see on your left for 10 km.

Continue straight and turn right on the road to Cacharel and cross the village to regain the starting point of the circuit, the Tourist Office of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

At the roundabout, take the second exit and cross the village towards the Cacharel road for 4 km. 1 - Around the small parking, before the Cacharel farmhouse, take the track of the Five Gorges (said Méjanes) on the right. Continue for 11 km to the Méjanes estate. 2 - After the Méjanes estate, at the sign "give way", go right on the D37 and continue for 8 km. Go along the Vaccarès pond. Pass in front of the observation point of Mas Neuf Vaccarès (set up by the Camargue Regional Nature Park). After the observatory, continue towards Arles and Salin-de-Giraud. 3 - At the intersection of Villeneuve and the snack bar Les Salicornes, turn right on the C134 "Fiélouse" towards La Capelière. Cycle there for 14.5 km. Go along the pond Pass in front of La Capelière, Mas de Fiélouse, then Salin-de-Badon. 4 - Continue straight towards the dike to the sea. Continue on the trail to the Flamingo Observatory. 5 - At the observatory, turn right and take the dike to the sea towards the Gacholle lighthouse (trail accessible only on foot and by bike). Enter the Camargue National Nature Reserve. Pass the lighthouse and continue. Continue on the dike to the sea until Pertuis de Rousty. At Pertuis, continue straight to the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer which is located 6 km from there.

Sylvéréal means "royal forest" because there was a pine forest between Sylvéréal and Albaron. The Sylvéréal Bridge connects the Petit and Grande Camargue, between Gard and Bouches-du-Rhône. Crossing the Petit-Rhône was done through floating boats linked to each other until the construction of a bridge that was destroyed during the Second World War, a ferry then ensured the relay between the two departments until the construction of the current bridge in 1956.

Catfish have developed abundantly in the Rhone, there are certainly the largest specimens in Europe. The catfish are therefore freshwater fish that average 1.5 m long but can reach 2.73 m. In the Petit-Rhône, a few kilometers from the Sylvéréal bridge, some fish exceed 2 m 60 and weigh more than 100 kg.

The Astouin castle estate was able to develop itself hanks to the containment of the Rhone, close to agricultural activities, between Petit-Rhône and the Vaccarès pond. In this tea room in the heart of the village of Valleraugue, you'll find hot and cold drinks, craft beers, ice creams, crêpes, waffles and croque-monsieur made with a maximum of fresh seasonal produce, served all day long. In summer, a terrace on the banks of the Hérault welcomes you, where you can enjoy charcuterie, cheese boards and salads. Evening meals and breakfasts can be booked before 6pm. In the boutique, a fine selection of decorative objects awaits you: candles, crockery, jewelry... But also plants and flowers according to the season!
