Between 23 million years ago and 5 million years before our era, in the Tertiary era, the Aquitaine Basin was occupied by a sea called the Falun Sea. Traces of this sea are visible in Salles, mainly in the form of shells and remains of fish or cetaceans, especially teeth, compacted in the ground (shell stones), some of which were exploited in the Salles quarries. The Leyre River takes its source near Luglon in the Moor, crosses the Moor plateau and flows into the Arcachon Bay. A vault of foliage overlooks the river, sometimes opening onto the sky. The valleys of the Leyre, composed of the Grande-Leyre (commonly called "Rivière sauvage" in France), the Petite-Leyre and the Eyre, are rare environments in Europe, where otters, European mink and European pond turtle survive.
