This tour allows you to discover the Left Bank and the beauty of the landscapes of the Meuse Valley along the canal. Dead man’s hill (Le Homme-mort) has suffered some of the most deadliest combats just as much as those on the right bank. Today, it is a pleasant wooded mound that you can enjoy visiting. This course is perfect for a first try of the electric bike. Easy and with little difference in altitude, it will be perfect for a nice stroll with family or friends ! Limited in supply and manpower, the Kronprinz army cannot attack simultaneously on both banks of the Meuse. In order to obtain better results on the right bank, C.Q.G. German prepared the second phase of its offensive whose main objective was to take control of the hills of Mort-Homme (Dead man’s hill) and the Côte 304. These two natural observatories regulated the fires of the French artillery; it is in fact a crucial stake for the offensive continuation. The fighting raged on there for weeks, destroying villages of Esnes-EN-ARGONNE and Chattancourt. Rapidly, the battle peaks became untenable volcanoes; suicidal assaults fade to move on to countless murderous gunshots . To protect themselves from bombing, both sides took refuge on the hillside, digging tunnels. On August 20, 1917, the generals Guillaumat and Pétain begin a to put victorious offensive which has the effect four German divisions attached to the sector Mort-Homme-cote 304 to flight. To the thousands of prisoners, material and armaments captured, must also be added more than twenty thousand victims whose units appear on the current monuments. In this inferno, the village of Cumières will disappear completely and will never be rebuilt.

This tour is the perfect way to discover Verdun for the first time. It invites cyclists to explore the city's history through the centuries, from the 10th century to the present day. You'll discover lively Verdun with its quays, medieval Verdun and contemporary Verdun with its art deco facades. Pedal to the rhythm of the Meuse on the Véloroute voie verte, enjoy the peace and quiet of the canal banks and explore Verdun's "Little Venice". The city boasts no fewer than five canals and twenty bridges. Originally, these canals were used by the many mills, tanneries and for navigation. Although some have been buried, you can still admire the Canal St-Airy, with its stone bridge and 16th-century house, the Canal du Puty, which runs alongside the ramparts, the Pont-écluse St-Amand and its Canal St-Vanne, and the discreet Canal de Minimes, which winds its way through the houses of Verdun.

This ride takes in some beautiful countryside in the Gaume region and leads at the summit of a gentle slope to the site of Montquintin, a veritable eagle’s nest overlooking the valley of the River Ton. Cheerful, charming villages such as Torgny, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia”, echo the mildness of the Gaume climate. Completed in 1623 for Nicolas Japin, supplier of gunpowder to French King Louis XIII, this superb private residence was inspired by the Parisian building style of the 17th Century. As with the Citadel which was built at the same time, it was one of the initial milestones in the French administration’s presence in Verdun. It was purchased in 1744 by the City Council. And it was here, where so many important decisions were taken, that the tragedy of the death of Commandant Beaurepaire was played out in 1792. The building suffered a fire in 1864 which necessitated restoring its roof. In 1916, braving the bombardments, the Sapeur-Pompier Regiment tasked with dealing with outbreaks of fire in the city, set up their base in the cellars of the Town Hall. The Medal Room displays the 26 French and foreign medals given to the city in 1916 at the height of the Battle.

Formerly known by the name of Saint-Croix Square, since 1837 this square has borne the name of François de Chevert (1695-1769), whose statue stands here, and who became Marshal of France in 1744. The square has a bronze medallion at the junction of the Pont Legay and the Quai de la République, which commemorates the heroic act by resistance fighter Fernand Legay. On 30th August 1944, when the American Army was on the point of entering the city, he succeeded in disarming a German bomb placed under the bridge adjoining the square, which was the only bridge capable of bearing the weight of the American tanks. A pillar of the Liberty Route marks the passing of General Patton’s Third Army on the same day. Verdun was officially liberated on 31st August 1944.

The church of Saint-sauveur is the third to be built with this name. The first was built during the 11th century in the street that still bears its name. It was knocked down in 1798 because it had fallen into disrepair. The second was built in 1830, in the site of the Couvent des Minimes (yhe convent of the order of Siant Francis of Paola). The last one was built in 1931, on the site of the old Siant-Hippolyte Hospital, which was destroyed during the Firt World War.

This building is a former mill attached to the Abbey of Saint Airy, dating from 1774. It would have been used to produce flour, weapons, notably two-handed swords (zweihander), and to whip cloth. The building was bought by Mr. Couten, who fled Metz after the annexation of Alsace-Moselle, and converted it into a château. The château was sold to the city of Verdun in 1951, and restored in recent years.

The work of the architect Chenevier, completed in 1893, Verdun’s theatre was inspired by the Opéra Garnier in Paris. The Italian-style hall was built on the bank of the Meuse, replacing a grain market destroyed by a fire. As with the public gardens and other walks, it formed part of the works of civic improvements and urban leisure so typical of the 19th Century. Promenades, music stands and theatres were essential features in the life of a garrison town. See also The carvings on the façade representing Greek theatrical masks. Built in the 14th Century, it was part of the Grand Rampart around Verdun. Horseshoe-shaped in plan, it is also known as the Puty Tower. The name “Plaids” comes from the court sessions which were held in the tower during the Middle Ages. See also : The old rampart bordering the Puty Canal and the Islot Tower. NOTE : The Puty Canal flows underneath the Tower of the Plaids. It is one of the many branches of the Meuse. These canals remind us of the period when the tanners’ workshops, involved in work for the Army, formed an important sector of the industrial activity of Verdun.

Located in the heart of the town, on the banks of the Meuse, this small square is a haven of peace and relaxation. With its children's playground, benches and kiosk, it's a popular spot for visitors.

Built in the 14th century, it forms part of the Grand Rempart de Verdun. Shaped like a horseshoe, it is also known as the Tour du Puty. The name "Plaids" comes from the judicial hearings held here in the Middle Ages. SIGHTSEEING : > The old ramparts along the Canal du Puty and the Tour de l'Islot. > The Canal du Puty runs beneath the Tour des Plaids. This is one of the many canals running from the Meuse to Verdun. These canals are a reminder of the time when tanners' workshops, working for the army, represented a major part of Verdun's industrial activity.

This market is located on the site of the former Augustins abbey, destroyed during the French Revolution. From the 14th century onwards, this abbey extended from the covered market to the municipal theater. This was Verdun's poorest abbey, and as the Augustinians were an order of mendicants and preachers, they exercised their ministries on the Pont des Augustins, close to the market. The market has been held every Friday morning since 1853, when the current building was constructed. Throughout the season, the covered market welcomes exhibitors, second-hand goods dealers, local artists and other Meuse creators in an enchanting, authentic setting. Every Friday from 8am to 1pm...Stock up on local produce! It's the ideal place to shop, breathe in the scent of the terroir and chat with passionate producers. Butchers, greengrocers, cheese-makers, bakers, producers, fishmongers, poulterers, caterers and many more to discover (70 to 80 traders).

Built on piles at the end of the 19th Century, the Officers’ Mess was one of the buildings essential for the life of the garrison. It was offered to the Army by the contractors who built the forts, ouvrages and gun batteries which encircle Verdun. In 1890 the population of Verdun counted as many military personnel as there were civilians. Several barracks are still to be seen in and around Verdun.
