LA PORTE SAINT MARTIN: Adventure and Tranquility in the Alps' Foothills

Discover the geological curiosities of the Vercors. The itinerary continues through woods and clearings before ending on a rocky outcrop; Cross in a few laces in order to join the Moulin Marquis on the left. From there, go back to the cave of the Gaulois, then we follow the cliffs that overhang the circus of Bournillon. Along the way, beautiful belvedere on the cave of Bournillon and the cascade of Moulin Marquis (caution, notably with the children). Some laces in the forest (well follow the yellow and green markings) go up to the Porte du Diable. Pass under the rocky bridge, climb carefully on a rocky vire (be careful in wet weather) to unclog the plateau of Saint-Julien (opposite, small belvedere on the Bourne gorges). The return to Saint-Julien-en-Vercors takes place for a good part in undergrowth before joining the crossroads of Ponson.

Follow the footsteps of the old mule tracks, which once linked the plateau of Vercors to the lower valley of the Bourne.This hike offers a beautiful panorama of the two "big canyons" of the Vercors. From the La Plateforme car park, take the direction of Pas de l'Allier 3 on a forest track passing through Le Pin 1 and Micoulas 2, the path gradually narrows to the lookout point of Pas de l 'Allier, where, you can admire an exceptional panorama on the Rhone valley in particular. Then descend to the cliff side by a narrow path (be careful in rainy weather!) To reach the crossroads of the Voûtes 4. From there, begin the gradual ascent towards the Pas des Voûtes 5, from which you can admire the panorama on the Gorges de la Bourne. Continue towards La Cabane à Lili 6, on the way, a must-see belfry on Choranche and Presles invites you to contemplation before joining the parking of La Platform.

This short circuit for the whole family gives you the opportunity to discover some geological curiosities of the Vercors. Indeed, between the Glacière de Corrençon and the Barre aux Chèvres, you will be amazedby the chasms and fracturescreated by water in the limestone.

The monument of the 45th Parallel is located a few meters away, in front of a place of memory dedicated to the resistance during World War II. You can also follow Le Puits which will take you to the Puits des Ravières, a rare permanent water point here resulting from the convergence of the run-off in the center of a clay basin (attention, it is unfortunately impossible To obtain water).The return trip is made by the GR 91 following the direction of Corrençon-en-Vercors by Camp II, Les Ravières, Rocher de l'Echalet, Les Feuillus, Cross of the Mass, Le Clariant, then Le Champ de la Bataille , Les Charmeyennes, the Cross of Jacques and Le Golf. From there, join the village by Les Murgers, Les Picauds, then Les Martins.

This walk will take you to one of the most noteworthy sites of remembrance in the massif. Tucked away in the forest, the Resistance used the village of Valchevrière as a camp. Violent clashes broke out in July 1944: members of the Resistance died with their weapons in their hands as the village was razed to the ground. Only the chapel remained standing. Starting from the Valchevrière belvedere, follow the path that drops into the forest towards the site of Valchevrière, where you will find information panels dotted along the route that recall life in the village before the events of 1944. At the end of the path, the scenery opens up onto the landscape and village of Valchevrière. You can walk around the ruined houses, visit the chapel and explore the history of the village thanks to the information panels above the site. Now carry on a little further (200 m) along the signposted path leading towards Baraque de Chalimont, and follow the forest track that heads back towards the starting point, the Valchevrière belvedere.

Discover the cirque de Choranche, an exceptional real open book on the history of the Vercors. Departure from the village of Choranche. At the parking lot, take the direction of the Choranche site 5 via La Ranconnière 1 and then the Carrefour des Buis 2. Always follow the yellow and green signs all along the route. From there, it is possible to reach the underground lake of Gournier via the Ruisseau de Gournier 3 or to directly reach the site of Choranche, passing under the cascade de tuf then the Belvedere of the waterfall 4 .The return to Choranche (village) is done by the same route.

A 30-minute walk from the village of Corrençon via the GR 91 in the direction of the Hauts Plateaux du Vercors (the Vercors Highlands). Whetheron foot, on snowshoes or cross-country skis, this is an easy excursion providing a “taste” of the picturesque ambiance of a true mountain refuge.

The museum traces the history, techniques and applications of the chemical industry in southern Grenoble from 1915 to the present day. Self-guided tour, guided tour or audioguide via the Tellnoo app. Located in Jarrie, on the first floor of the town hall, in the heart of the Clos Jouvin municipal park, the museum is set in the preserved environment of the old, cool, vaulted cellars of the manor house. The tour presents the history of chemistry since antiquity, and traces the history, techniques and applications of the chemical industry in southern Grenoble, from 1915 to the present day. The chemistry of the 21st century, omnipresent in our daily lives and essential to meeting the challenges of sustainable development, is more innovative and responsible than ever. The tour route, completely renovated in 2014, is punctuated by new open-access workbenches: build a Volta cell, perform electrolysis or operate a fuel cell! A video consultation area and a library are available to the public. A new mediation and exhibition room means you can visit the Chemistry Museum as and when it suits you. Along the cliffs, admire the view of the Vercors Drômois; From the two Cournouze to the Col du Rousset, passing through the alpine pastures of Font d'Urle. Along the cliff, you can see the virgin of the Vercors. Perhaps you will also be able to admire paragliders, the Pas de St-Martin being a take-off site.

In winter, the Herbouilly site is connected to Villard de Lans and Corrençon en Vercors by a network of 150 km of cross-country ski trails. The snow disappeared, besides the free flight and the climbing, Herbouilly is an emblematic place for the initiation to speleology, in particular to the chasm of Gours Fumant. Hiking and mountain biking trails allow you to visit the site. For the less athletic, the trail of Oscar or the Filambule, starting from the Nordic building offer adventures adapted to the families.

Vast opening of more than 2km of length, the plain of Herbouilly is one of the rare meadows of mowing at this altitude (1300m). Numerous springs on its eastern ledge have allowed the installation of farms, of which one still sees the ruins. A blend of pre-woods, wetlands and dry lawns, it contains a large variety of flowers. Attention, some are protected at the national level. Their picking is strictly forbidden. The whole site is preserved by a prefectoral order of protection of biotope. So, rather than picking flowers, photograph them!

The ruins of the Herbouilly farm are the vestige of history. In June 1944, the farm served as a command post for Jean Prevost (Captain Goderville). On 23 July 1944, the Germans attacked Valchevrière. Jean Prévost is his men must retreat and the farm is destroyed by the Germans.

Small village of 250 inhabitants perched at 900 m of altitude, Saint-Julien-en-Vercors is dominated in the East by the Crests of Chalimont. One of the curiosities of the village is to the right of the entrance of the Church, in fact, a stalagmite with a cross has been installed there since 1832 by Jacques Borel. This stalagmite comes from the cave of Barmechinelle in the South of the Village. Since 1867, mining is prohibited.

During a tour of maintenance and surveillance, an old path completely disappeared in the vegetation was rediscovered by the ecogardes of the Regional Natural Park of the Vercors. After consulting the cadastre, this trail turned out to be an old communal road. With the authorization of the commune of La Chapelle-en-Vercors and the technical support of local associations, the park's agents were able to re-open it and integrate it into the network of marked hiking trails. You will take it between the crossroads of the Rochers d'Echevis and the Chemin des cliffs. It offers in particular a beautiful viewpoint on the Gorge des Grands Goulets (watch out for the cliff). From the path, a belvedere allows you to admire the waterfall of Moulin Marquis and the Cirque du Bournillon. With its 400 m of fall, it is one of the most important waterfalls in France. At its foot stands the cave of Bournillon with its magnificent porch. This cave is today the temporary emergence of the largest karst basin of the Vercors.

The Arbois dam completes the hydroelectric system of the Bourne valley. It supplies the Bournillon power station via a 430 meter penstock. The drop height is 90 meters for a production power of 24 GWh / year (the equivalent in consumption of a city of 11,000 inhabitants).The source of Arbois (the largest in the Vercors by its flow) is the permanent karstic emergence of the Arbois-Bournillon network.

The Bourne is the main river of the Vercors, which drains all the rainwater, make snow, but also all the waters that have circulated in the kilometers of galleries and caves. These subterranean waters recover the open air by resurgences which form periodic majestic cascades emerging as if by enchantment of the rock and coming to dress up the great limestone cliffs, symbols of the landscapes of the Vercors. This torrential river also marks the territory as a way of communication between the top and the bottom. It stimulates the passions, like a magnet in this relatively dry territory, since a large part of the water circulates in the subsoil. She quietly finishes her race at St Nazaire-en-Royans in a lake located at the confluence with the Isère. For the fishermen this river is still a myth in front of the richness of its aquatic ecosystem which is home to a large population of trout and other fish. We must ensure that uses (hydropower, irrigation, agriculture, development) do not degrade this vital vein for the territory, in an uncertain future subject to the vagaries of climate change.

The carette hut is an old sheepfold restored by the Parc du Vercors and transformed into an unguarded refuge. This beautiful hut indicates the entrance to the Natural Reserve of Hauts-Plateaux du Vercors.

The Fauge Shelter is a large, unguarded hut. With a fireplace, it can accommodate 20 people. It is named after the valley of the Fauge.

The shelter of Peyrouse (Abri de la Peyrouse) located on the balconies East of the Vercors is an unguarded stone hut, 2 places are planned to sleep there, but you will not find there water nor stove to warm you.

The Baraque of Veymont is an unguarded cabin of the Forest Service. It can accommodate 8 people for the night, but plan your equipment because it does not have mattresses or stove.

The cabin of the Aiguillettes is a former shepherd's hut dating back to the time when the pastoral units were smaller. This hut, open to the public, accommodates only 4 people by tightening a little and does not have a stove.

At the crossroads of several important trails, the Cabin de Pre Peyret is one of the most frequented of the massif. Located at the entrance of the high plateaus at 1600 m, this unguarded stone hut can accommodate 10 people for the night. It has a stove.The place exudes an old tradition of welcome because it is an old cabaret where those who were penniless went to drink at the Fountain of the Endettés, which bears his name well.

The shelter of the pass of Vassieux is an unguarded shelter built in 1976 and restored in 2014-2015 by the Regional Natural Park of Vercors.With a maximum capacity of 15 people, it is open all year and free of access. However, as with most shelter huts in the territory, certain rules must be respected if the service is to last for a long time (most of them are recalled to you inside the shelter).
