Unveiling the charms of Malmerspach, Haut-Rhin, Alsace

Departing from Cernay, the route follows the Thur Valley cycle route towards the Kruth lake, set in a veritable green setting. Along the way, a visit to the Parc de Wesserling, a genuine 19th-century textile town with park, garden and château covering more than 42 hectares, is a must. The climb that follows is a particularly challenging one, taking you along the ridge towards the Markstein, which rises to an altitude of around 1,200 metres, and the Grand Ballon, with its pass at 1,348 metres. The panorama is grandiose and richly deserved. The descent is via the Col Amic, a classic Tour de France stage. It then joins the Alsace vineyard cycle route at Soultz-Haut-Rhin. The route then gently winds its way back to the starting point.

This route will take you across the valley’s villages and forests to the stubble fields. Don’t hesitate to take the time for a gourmet break to enjoy typical menus offered by our farm inns, which also have a breathtaking view of the Thur valley.

This pleasant circuit leads you through the stubble fields and forest around Mitzach. Accessible to all, it’s a suitable circuit to discover electric mountain-biking whilst getting an insight of the valley villages.

Hirschenbach Glen is a testimony to the natural geological wealth of the high Thur Valley, modeled by ice and gradually taken over by varied vegetation. Make the most of this stroll and observe the iconic High Vosges flora and a wide variety of birds if you approach with enough caution.

Take the time to discover the forest and unravel its secrets. Keep your eyes open - you might spot some of its inhabitants.

The route starts from the Place Clémenceau in Willer-sur-Thur and then goes to the campsite, passes behind the ponds and leads to the place called "Le Moulin" before going up to Goldbach. In Goldbach, under the church, the route bypasses the village on the right and crosses the road to take the field road and a steep path that leads to the Hohneck on the village heights. The trail then winds through thatch and down to the village of Altenbach. The race takes the wide path that leads to the Sattel and then to the Ober-Sattel. The trail leads out of the forest at the Haag Pass and climbs to the summit via the right and the southwest balcony. After the stairs and the passage near the Blue Devils monument, the route turns right and leads downhill to the parking lot of the Grand-Ballon chalet-hotel and the finish line. Please note that from the beginning of May, a temporary marker will be put in place to allow all those who wish to come and train on the World Cup course.

This is for experienced riders! A succession of passes with very short recovery times, this is what awaits you. Oderen pass, Grand Ventron, Peaks Route, Markstein and Grand Ballon... all in one loop. Does this tempt you?

The little circuit around Huselberg offers many panoramas on the Thur valley. This walk crosses forests, moors, ancient pastures, and is enlivened by numerous benches scattered along the way to enjoy the viewpoints peacefully.

At an altitude of 1030 m, the Thannerhubel Farmhouse-inn clings to the slope, dominating the Thur valley and offering a beautiful Panorama of the Grand Ballon massif. From there, the paths leading to the Rossberg massif cross the stone walls lining the municipal boundaries. This walk, departing from the Farmhouse-inn, lasts around 1h15 for the whole family with a stop at the orientation table to try to find your way with all these mountains!

DEPARTING FROM LAUSANNE, HEAD TO THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF GRUYÈRES, HOME TO THE FAMOUS SWISS CHEESE! Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. The volcano forest, located in the Rossberg massif, is dominated by the rocks of the Vogelsteine (1164 m). Preservation of the site: chamoix, Lynx, hawk, black woodpecker, more than a hundred mushrooms! Different hiking trails lead you from Wegscheid: follow the blue or yellow round triangle.

Lake snuggles in an ancient glacial cirque at 1000m altitude ! Activities: fishing, walking and swimming at the risks and perils of the bather. Access: on foot only, 1 hour walk from the Neuweiher or Rimbach-près-Masevaux.

The Rouge Gazon classified natural site welcomes you in its green setting. A haven of peace and relaxation, this man-made stubble-field was formerly exploited by marcaires (local farmers) as a summer pasture. Some cows still frequent the grassy areas in summer. Beautiful hiking trails will guide you to the nearest summits with amazing views. Mountain bike tours (or snowshoe tours in winter) are also available to admire lakes, forests of fir trees, chamois, or typical farms. Please take notice that the hotel-restaurant is closed.

The Drumont is the summit of the Vosges mountains that overlooks Bussang, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. It offers a remarkable panorama. An orientation table erected by the French Alpine Club dating back to 1891 explains the wonderful circular panorama. A glance at the valley reveals Bussang, nestled on the side of the mountain the Tête des Corbeaux. The panorama over the Ballon d'Alsace, the Rossberg and the Grand Ballon is simply magnificent. In the south, you can see the Swiss Alps on a very clear day. The panorama displays wooded peaks and urbanized valleys. The Chaume du Drumont is a typical Vosges summer pasture where cows produce milk processed into Munster cheese and Tomme. There are marked trails for beginners and more advanced hikers. The summit is frequented by paragliders and scale modelling hobbyists flying their models. The Drumont was also a centre of resistance. The Chaume du Drumont was burnt by the Germans on 23 September 1944. A plaque evokes the sacrifice of volunteers during the battle of 1944. A farm inn offers local specialties and dormitories for hikers. The Drumont is inaccessible in winter because the road is not clear. The bravest can try to join it on snowshoes!

High place of resistance, the Chaume du Drumont was set on fire by the Germans on September 23, 1944. Hard fights were delivered by the Corps Franc Pommiés at the end of November 1944. A commemorating plaque raises the sacrifice of those volunteers. At 1,200 m, an orientation table erected by the French Alpine Club and dating from 1891 explains its amazing surrounding panorama view. A glance at the valley reveals Bussang, nestled on the side of the mountain Tête des corbeaux. The panorama of the Ballon d'Alsace, the Rossberg and the Grand Ballon is simply grandiose. To the south, in very clear weather, you can see the Swiss Alps. The panorama switches between wooded summits and urbanized valleys.

The chapel, located in the middle of the forest of the Charbonniers valley, primarily serves as a refuge where you can warm up and picnic. It was built in 1857 by a few local residents. During the widening of the road, the removal of a huge rock left enough space to build a chapel. A small building was quickly erected, in which a statue of Mary was placed. The small chapel was extended to its current size in 1873. One of the artisans who contibuted to this extension was a grocer from the Charbonniers, well known to lumberjacks for the small bottles he sold them, hence his nickname "Botiotte", now attached to the chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours. The walk to the chapel can be a very pleasant in the silence of the forest, where vestiges of the mines exploited in past centuries for the Dukes of Lorraine still remain.

[Currently undergoing restoration work until October 2025] From the top of the rocky promontory of Eichstein, the Virgin of Alsace watches over Niederbruck and the Doller Valley. Sculpted by Antoine Bourdelle in 1923, she is made of grey Chauvigny limestone. Before her inauguration on October 7, 1923, the sculpture was exhibited at the Autumn Salon in Paris. Her story: At the beginning of World War I, the village mayor and owner of the copperworks, Joseph Vogt (mayor of Niederbruck from 1891 to 1919), and his wife promised to erect a statue on the Eichstein rock if the factory and the valley were spared. Their wish was granted. After Joseph Vogt's death, his son Léon fulfilled the promise. The plaque on the statue’s pedestal bears the inscription: "In gratitude for the divine protection over the Masevaux valley and the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France — the spouses Joseph Vogt 1914–1918." Access to the Virgin is only on foot via a moderate hiking trail. The path begins at the edge of the bike trail, where it enters the forest. Follow the blue circle markers. Upon arrival at the Virgin, you will enjoy a view of the village and the Triebelskopf and Heindenkopf mountains.

The two mountain lakes are only accessible on foot, which makes all their charm Activities: fishing, walking, bathing at the risk and peril of the bather. Access: on foot only, about 1 hour walk from Rimbach-près-Masevaux.

The church was built in 1786, when the first walls were constructed, carks appeared on them, stopping work for many years.It was only in 1837 that wok started again with the architect Kuen, finishing in 1842. In 1966 a great fire entirely destroyed the church. It took fice years to rebuild it again , in the original noeclassical design. Before the great fire the church housed the famous organs built by the Callinet brothers.The largest were as large as the Nave. The largest that the Callinet's had ever (19m). A new organ was built in 1975 by Akfred Kern from Strasbourg, completed with a Schwenkedel heart organ (1972). Thanks to both of these instruments, the International Organ festival has taken place in Masevaux since 1977, contributing to Masevaux's renown.

The refuge is only accessible on foot: 1h from Rimbach (Ermensbach), 2h from Rouge Gazon, 1h30 from the Oberbruck stadium, 3h from the Ballon d'Alsace. It is located on the shores of Lake Neuweiher, a glacial lake. A lakeside terrace is at your disposal. Accommodation is available in dormitories or rooms, with half-board.

The chef offers gourmet, tasty and imaginative cuisine. You can enjoy a beer brewed in Alsace and tartes flambées (Flammekueche) at lunchtime or in the evening. A beautiful list of around 50 wines from all over France gives pride of place to Alsace with three winegrowers and a wide range of wines by the glass. The decoration is the strong point of the room, adorned with magnificent chandeliers and woodwork created by cabinetmakers. In summer, the terrace welcomes customers in the shade of its large tree. An annex room of the restaurant with personalized decoration can be privatized for 30 people, it includes a screen and projection equipment.
