The Drumont

The Drumont is the summit of the Vosges mountains that overlooks Bussang, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. It offers a remarkable panorama. An orientation table erected by the French Alpine Club dating back to 1891 explains the wonderful circular panorama. A glance at the valley reveals Bussang, nestled on the side of the mountain the Tête des Corbeaux. The panorama over the Ballon d'Alsace, the Rossberg and the Grand Ballon is simply magnificent. In the south, you can see the Swiss Alps on a very clear day. The panorama displays wooded peaks and urbanized valleys. The Chaume du Drumont is a typical Vosges summer pasture where cows produce milk processed into Munster cheese and Tomme. There are marked trails for beginners and more advanced hikers. The summit is frequented by paragliders and scale modelling hobbyists flying their models. The Drumont was also a centre of resistance. The Chaume du Drumont was burnt by the Germans on 23 September 1944. A plaque evokes the sacrifice of volunteers during the battle of 1944. A farm inn offers local specialties and dormitories for hikers. The Drumont is inaccessible in winter because the road is not clear. The bravest can try to join it on snowshoes!
