WORTH KNOWING: Numerous sites have been occupied on the Malbousquet crest since the Bronze Age. On one of the hills overlooking the village, the Jouffe site, excavations have revealed the location of a protohistoric oppidum, which was later reoccupied during the Roman period. In the 11th century, a priory was built here, of which all that remains are the ruins of the church, abandoned at the time of the Wars of Religion. On the hill below are the ruins of the Castellas, a castle built in the 11th century.

GOOD TO KNOW : Dry stone, an inexhaustible resource in the limestone subsoil, is an integral part of the landscape. This material is used to build low walls, capitelles (shelters), terraces and other small structures. Wherever you look, it underlines the beauty and ruggedness of the landscape.

Fontanès-Caveirac. 2h00. 28 km. Easy. Possible departures from Sommières and Calvisson. From Fontanès to Caveirac, you pass orchards and olive groves, vineyards and meadows, with hills covered in holm oaks and pine forests and dense garrigue. You'll see manades (bull farms) and, just before Sommières, a splendid panorama of the Pic Saint-Loup. From here, you can access a number of villages and tourist sites in the Pays de Sommières. Departures are possible from Sommières and Calvisson. Unlike a cycle path, which is reserved exclusively for cyclists, a voie verte is a facility reserved for non-motorized traffic: bicycles, pedestrians, rollerbladers and sometimes horseback riders. The Vaunage greenway is built on a former railroad line. Ideal for beginners, families or a leisurely stroll, set off for adventure on this unsuspected itinerary! Connected to the voie verte, two cyclo-découvertes loops on roads shared between bikes and cars allow you to extend your escapade: the Le Vidourle loop from Sommières (34 km) and the Les Olivettes loop from Calvisson (21 km).

The walk is organised by the environment committee and the association ‘Les écologistes de l'Euzière’. ROUTE : Start at the Château de Villevieille car park, head towards the Allée du parc, the chemin Lou Cayle, the traverse des Eaudes, the chemin de la Roquette, the chemin de l'Euzière and the chemin de l'Euzière. chemin de la Roquette, chemin de Soulas, chemin de Biron. Continue along the chemin des Prairies and turn left. At the Mas de Baudran sign, turn right towards the Bois de Clapisse. At the Bois de Clapisse post, turn right onto the greenway at the Pont de Corbières post. Follow the greenway to the Ludevia signpost. After 100 metres, turn right onto the Voie Ludevia. Go up the old Roman road, then turn right at the Belleau post. Immerse yourself in a history as you walk from the banks of the river Gardon to Mas Soubeyran, a museum of French Protestantism. You will be able to enjoy far-reaching views onto the Puechs, Mont Aigoual, Mont Liron and, on clear days, even the Alps. From the car park, turn right onto the D 50, cross the Pont des Camisards bridge and turn left towards Le Travès / Paussan. Then head for Mas Soubeyran via La Roquette. At Mas Soubeyran, take the path on the right to reach La Baumelle gully, which leads to the mas (farm) of the same name. Walk past the mas on its right and continue on the track to join up with the road. Turn right onto the road and after 250 m turn left on a path towards La Rouvière. At La Rouvière, turn left onto a fire road (DFCI) and take a path on the left that goes downhill into Roquefeuille gully. Cross the bridge, take the road on the left and then a small path on the right that will lead you back to Mialet.

A Soudorgues, le plus dur est fait, il ne vous reste qu’à vous laissez glisser jusqu’à La Coste, et descendre par une route un peu "cabossée" en direction de Lasalle. Soyez vigilants. The chapel is the oldest sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Gard, set in the garrigue. On the heights of Montmirat, overlooking the Courme valley, the chapel of Notre-Dame de Jouffe is the oldest sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Gard. An oppidum once stood on this site, before it became home to a Gallo-Roman population. It also bears witness to the influence of Cluny until the Wars of Religion. The site is accessible via a signposted hiking trail.

Ideal place for a walk, games for children and tree houses/ nets, it is also a place where many animations take place like the Nuit Douce (musical evening) or the Nuit des étoiles. This park dates back to 1782 when Jacques Destremx (elected mayor of the commune in 1869 and 1888) bought the three properties of the Marquis de Montmoirac, also lord of Montèze and Saint-Christol. From inheritance to marriage and life annuity, the Trouchaud couple (mayor of Saint-Christol-lez-Alès in 1932) settled down and became passionate about Rouret by creating an English garden, which over time became a natural park of Mediterranean type. In 1987, the municipality bought the 14-hectare estate, the park, but also the manor house, and developments were made around it: a stadium, a fitness trail, a botanical trail, a CAT, and a leisure center nearby. Many trees were planted there: cedars, maples, magnolia, red oak and a playground for children aged 1 to 6 years was built. This place is now very appreciated for its calm. An ideal place for a stroll, it is also a place where many events take place such as the Nuit Douce (musical evening) or the Nuit des étoiles.

The Parc des Cordeliers is the former garden of the Franciscan convent, also called Cordeliers, with an area of 4 hectares. Its main entrance is on Avenue Rollin. The Parc des Cordeliers is very appreciated for its calm and the beauty of its species as well as its freshness thanks to its various springs and ponds. Following the paths, walkers will discover the typical trees of the region but also less common species such as the Himalayan cedar, the Virginia tulip tree, the Japanese cryptomeria, the purple beech or the Canary oak which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful specimens in Europe. A botanical trail, available free of charge at the reception desk of the Anduze tourist information office, allows you to discover this park. There is the Bust of Clara d'Anduze, the Plaque of the poet Florian, the poet and writer Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) and the resistance fighter Marcel Bonnafoux (1910-1942) as well as the war memorial. It also hosts playgrounds for children. Free entrance, open all year round.

People under 50 years old will find themselves in a world that will seem far away, in the middle of writing supports and objects that allowed to transmit knowledge, writings, ideas replaced by a tool as impersonal as the computer. For the others, nostalgia for the past will invade you and a multitude of memories will rush into your head bringing back good or bad moments of your childhood. Original museum on 450 m²: collections of writing objects, history and manufacturing techniques of all writing supports (papyrus, parchment, various), reconstitution of a classroom of 1920. The museum is very lively and attractive with many educational and fun activities throughout the year. A choice of eight educational workshops are proposed for each school vacation and during the visit of the classes. The visit ends with a workshop allowing to practice with all the writing instruments. Courses in straw marquetry, Western, Japanese, Hebrew and Arabic calligraphy are scheduled throughout the year. Regular courses in illumination and art framing are held every month. The museum permanently displays one or more temporary exhibitions in its vaulted rooms. "Le Comptoir de l'Evesque" is located in the heart of an old barn converted into a restaurant with two air-conditioned rooms for 50 guests and a shaded terrace for up to 100. Situated equidistant between the villages of Sauve and Quissac, at the gateway to the Cévennes and 30 km from Nîmes and Alès, "Le Comptoir de l'Evesque", its chef Céline, a Maître Restaurateur, and her team offer local, seasonal cuisine, using short-run produce from the restaurant's kitchen garden. Their hybrid cuisine blends the flavors of southern France and Brittany. The Comptoir de l'Evesque's location makes it an ideal venue, with two fully heated and air-conditioned dining rooms, one in an industrial style, the other with a glass roof, for a total capacity of 50 people.
