Explore the town of Lautrec, Tarn, Midi-Pyrénées

Duration: 4 hours – Distance: 12.2 km, Starting point: the car park at Montfa Town Hall. This village is one of the former strongholds of the ancestors of the famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec-Montfa. His father even lived there as late as the early 20th century. This walk offers the chance to explore the agricultural plateaus and enjoy beautiful views over the Castraise and Lautrécoise plains. As you walk, you’ll pass through meadows, village paths, small hamlets and woodland. In particular, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the ruins of Montfa Castle, which is gradually being restored thanks to the Friends of the Castle association. The Roman trail leaves from the center of the village of Lombers. The known history of this town lies between 1165 and 1633. Its origin dates back to the Celtic or Gallo-Roman era. There was a fortified castle at the height of the peak, allowing enemies to be seen approaching. At the northern base of the Pic, coming from Albi, the Roman road was divided into two parts, one meandering towards the castle, the other allowing access to the town via the PAPAGAY gate. It is also on the old Roman road the “cami Roumieu” that the Roman trail continues.Download the hiking sheet in PDF format From the village square, head towards the town hall and continue the road, crossing the bridge to cross the Assou stream, and start climbing the Pic de Lombers by taking the second road on the right. Passage near the Pic de Lombers cross, which recalls the existence of the fortified castle. Continue right. After a section on tarmac, turn right towards the place called Puech Rouge. The path runs along a wooded area. Arriving in front of a tarmac municipal road, turn left with on the left the “Pied de Mulet” type dovecote of Médale. Turn at the Moulin d'Ambrozy, an authentic flour mill built before the 16th century and very nicely restored. Then join the greenway a few hundred meters further on the right towards Lombers.

At the edge of Graulhet, discover the charms of the wildlife around Lake Nabeillou and the adjacent forest: squirrels, nightingales, dragonflies, butterflies, and water turtles, among others, will guide your walk. Also, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Graulhet countryside, with its rolling hills and vibrant colors. From the parking lot, follow the gravel path up to a farm. Pass in front of the farm, then turn right into the housing development. Continue uphill for about 200 meters, then turn left towards the Notre-Dame-des-Vignes chapel. Facing the cemetery wall, turn left, then right at the corner. Pass to the left of the monument. Descend via a small road. At the road junction, turn right and reach an intersection. Turn left into a downhill alley and reach a crossroads of paths. Ascend right on a gravel path. A lake is on the left. Reach a road and turn left until you reach a crossroads. Turn left towards Souque and Vivier. Walk for about 150 meters, then turn right onto a grassy path towards Vivier. Reach a road and turn right for about 80 meters. -> To the right, off the trail, there is an option to visit Lake Miquelou (a 2.5 km round trip). Turn left at Capelette, then left again at a road intersection. At the first crossroads, continue straight towards Saint-Paules and Les Escudiés. At the second crossroads, descend straight on a gravel path. Ascend straight on the path you took earlier. Continue straight to a road intersection. Turn right. Pass Pradarié, then turn right onto a grassy path. Pass beside an orchard, then immediately turn left. Walk along the edge of fields and descend through a woodland. At the bottom of the wood, on a path, turn left. At a crossroads under poplars, turn right. Follow along the right side of Lake Nabeillou and return to the starting point by crossing the dam.

Duration: 5 hours 30 minutes – Distance: 19.5 km Starting from the medieval village and following the ‘Chemin des Fontaines’, this walk allows you to appreciate the scale of the wide meander formed by the River Agout and offers numerous views of the Sidobre and the Castraise plain. Car park GPS coordinates: 43.636650, 2.319025 Treasures of Romanesque architecture nestled in the valley. In Burlats, the Counts of Trencavel built a sumptuous residence away from the main roads, hidden in a bend of the Agout Valley. A true gem and a rare, perfectly preserved example of Romanesque civil architecture, this pavilion is named after Adélaïde, a princess with violet-coloured eyes who was celebrated in song and courted by the famous troubadours Arnaud de Mareuil and Alfonso II of Aragon. Duration: 10 or 20 mins – Distance: 0.400 to 0.800 km Why not follow in the footsteps of the granite carvers around the Sidobre’s most famous rock? Car park GPS coordinates: 43.6605, 2.3651 From Peyro Clabado to the old quarry, via the Quarrymen’s Cross and the Enchanted Oak, walk in the footsteps of the ancient stonemasons and discover the remains of their work from before the industrialisation of granite quarrying. After this short walk, don’t miss a visit to the Espace Jean Cros next to the Sphinx to find out more about these ‘Peiraires’! The legend of the enchanted oak: Legend has it that anyone who spends time near the tree will enjoy prosperity throughout the year. This legend, like many others in the Sidobre, dates back to the time of the ‘peiraires’ who worked the granite at the Pic des Fourches in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Indeed, many were able to increase their income thanks to their work with this stone. The Chemin des Vallées leaves from the village of Travet, the highest commune in Réalmontais (480 meters), before descending into the magical Dadou valley. The village was once a very important place of passage, a crossroads of roads which played a big role in the past. Around the year 1000, the existence of a castle motte (fortifications) serving as a place of observation over the valley is supposed to have existed in Cayla. This is how we can enjoy today a set of remarkable viewpoints at the start of the hike, then an unsuspected natural wealth in the very discreet Dadou valley.Download the hiking sheet in PDF format Departure from the picnic area, follow the yellow marks, go approximately 30m before turning left. Go another 50m and turn right. Finally follow the signs which take us out of the village via a dirt road. On a clear day, you can admire the Pyrenees mountain range. After the pond, continue until the road, then turn right. Go about 10m and turn left onto the path which runs alongside the field. At the end turn right and follow the signs. Admire the “Lajasse” viewpoint before turning left and going down a good descent into a wood. You enter a boxwood forest covered in lichens. You then arrive in a meadow bordering the Dadou covered with flowers in spring. At the end of it, do not cross the stream and turn right. You pass near a waterfall lined with boxwood laden with lichens. The path runs alongside the stream and brings you back, after a long climb on the plateau. You pass near the Costes Auries farm, producer of sheep's milk. Take the path on the left which takes you to the road towards Le Travet then take the same route as on the way back to return to the start.

The museum is recognised internationally for the works of this artist from Albi. TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, A UNIQUE COLLECTION IN THE WORLD The world’s most important public collection of the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including 31 posters by the lithograph painter, is to be found in Albi. There are also no fewer than 219 paintings, 563 drawings and 183 lithographs displayed in the museum. The mill in our hearts... it overlooks the village of Lautrec. Self-guided or guided tour of one of the few mills still producing flour. The Salette windmill dates back to 1688; it was restored in the 1990s by a carpenter and miller from Lautrécos. Open from mid-April to mid-October, the miller will give you a tour of the interior, providing a historical overview of the mill as well as an explanation of how it works. Castres Miniature Train Network, with its 150 metres of track, looks like a real railway. The Jean Jaurès Museum presents the life and commitments of this great orator, writer, journalist and younguest member of France Parliament (26 years old), born in Castre on 1859, assassinated in Paris on 1914. The museum provides a chronological an thematic journey of discovery and compréhension of the life of Jean Jaurès. It will allow you to better understand this exceptional pacifist man with a tragic destiny.

Unusual, poetic and timeless, the multicoloured houses on the Agout are a picture postcard vision of Castres. Formerly workshops of tanners, parchment makers or weavers, these colorful houses with pastel shades are half-timbered and date from the 13th century. Their marvelous facades have since been restored several times in order to saveguard their delicate and medieval charm. Almost unreal depending on the light, they can be contemplated from the front along the river banks or from the different bridges of the city.
