84 switchbacks and 700m of height loss over 2.5 km. These three figures sum up this descent, which is one of the finest in the Oisans region. One bend leads immediately to another. Starting in Oulles, the track winds its way through the heart of an ancient beech wood. Take care on the traverses as it’s easy to gather speed and you never know what is hidden under the leaves (stones, roots, branches, etc.). > The descent then begins, with a rapid succession of switchbacks... so long as you have the skills, it will all be alright! > The route finishes on a fast, straight section that comes out onto a track. Turn right for an easy ride back to the hamlet of La Paute.

Make sure you hold your children's hands during this forest hike, as the path runs close to a ravine. Visit the smallest village in Isère, before walking through the hamlet of Le Pouillard and following the path that goes to the right towards the mountain pastures. The balcony path gets steeper, so turn around to take a breather, and... admire the panoramic view !

From Oulles take the road to the Pouillard hamlet and then the track for about 750 m, here the path starts on the right. It's a steep path with a wonderful view over Oulles and the Oisans mountains. It leads out into the alpine grazing, passes close to the chalet du Carrelt and carries on to the Taillefer mountain hut. Starting from the village of Oulles, this beautiful hike winds through various vegetation zones before reaching the mountain hut and the vast Taillefer plateau. It’s a gradual journey that opens up to a view of Lake Fourchu and its panoramic summit vistas. This loop trail offers stunning views of the Alpine landscapes before leading to several small lakes, including one nestled on the plateau—one of the jewels of the Taillefer massif: the breathtaking Lac Fourchu. Surrounded by rock formations, the plateau offers the perfect setting to relax while admiring the untamed beauty of the area. Starting from Oulles, the path leading up to the Taillefer mountain hut offers one of the clearest views over the Oisans mountain tops, from the Rousses to the Ecrins. The Taillefer Plateau is a Natura 2000 site, where many species of flora and fauna are protected and sensitive, so we need to adapt our behavior so that the landscape and biodiversity continue to amaze us: - I stay on the marked trails (paint, signs...). I don't take shortcuts that cause soil erosion, destroy vegetation and disturb wildlife and herds. - I keep my dog on a leash to avoid disturbing wildlife and domestic herds. - I don't make fires in the mountains. It destroys the soil for decades. - I bivouac outside wetlands and pitch my tent at suitable times (7pm-9am). - I don't litter. - I don't pick flowers. I prefer a lasting souvenir by taking a photo. - I ask about private ownership of certain areas. This lovely walk to get you to the refuge takes you through fields with marmottes and sheep in the summer. The trail takes you progressively up the valley, giving you a wonderful panorama of the Oisans mountain range. TECHNICAL INFORMATION : Start : La Grenonière car park after Ornon. After about 1.5 km on the trail, take the path on the right in the direction of the refuge. The next part is quite steep until 'La Buffe'. The path then gets easier and you go past the Oulles alpine chalet, and finally cut across to the refuge.

Col d'Ornon marks the passage between Oisans and Valbonnais valleys. The only difficult part of the northern ascent of the Ornon pass is the slightly steeper slope before reaching the pass. The route starts from La Paute and is not very long at 10.4 km. The climb is irregular, and the average gradient is a demanding 6%. There are a few flat spots up to the Pont des Oulles. From there, the gradient is steeper (between 6.5 and 8%).

Take the left-hand combe which climbs steeply into the wood, along a good path often on a balcony, discovering numerous Malaine ruins bearing witness to a lively past. Exit the wood via a collet overlooking the village of Oulles, opposite Taillefer and Grand Galbert, at Le Piret at 1401m (signs). Beautiful views of Taillefer, Rochail, Muzelle, La Meije, Grandes Rousses... Descend to the village along a beautiful path with well-placed benches for contemplation, and follow the signs to Puy d'Oulles. At the end of the village, at a crow's-foot, follow the road to the left, then turn left onto an undergrowth path (wooden signpost to Puy d'Oulles). Here begins the descent through the combe du Collet, which is fairly steep and crosses three streams. At the end of the wood, you come to a wide path in a bend, in front of a small cliff surmounted by a stone oratory (several of the same style will be found along the way). Follow this good path to the left to reach Puy d'Oulles (ruins). Descend to the left along a wide, steep path to Clos de Balme (or Barme, on the map), continue along the road for about 600m to the hamlet of La Palud. Go up to the Villard-Reymmond road on the left, follow it for a moment, then take the path that descends to the left along the Lignarre, towards La Paute (signs). You cross the torrent twice on beautiful footbridges, then simply slide down to the road and join the parking lot.

Via ferrata are "railroads" that originated in the Dolomites and have since been widely developed in France. They must be approached with equipment and a minimum of technique. They offer you a different view of the mountains, and the opportunity to discover the sensations of mountaineering: emptiness, verticality, aesthetics of the route, evolution in a mineral and wild world. The Musée de la Romanche traces the industrial, energy and human history of the Romanche valley, an area shaped by water, hydroelectricity and the development of major industries. The Musée de la Romanche, located in Livet-et-Gavet, was created in 2001. It traces the industrial, human and energy history of the Romanche valley, an area shaped by water, fed by five torrents, and which over time has become a major economic factor in Isère. On the 1st floor, a space is dedicated to Charles-Albert Keller, an emblematic figure in local industrialization and a pioneer in the development of hydroelectricity in the valley. The Keller space features an immersive museography showcasing numerous models, some of which have recently been restored. These spectacular models were once presented by Keller at world and international exhibitions, illustrating the industrial innovation of the time. The 2nd floor is dedicated to the other industries of the Val de Livet, which accompanied the start-up and expansion of industrialization in the valley: the Neyret paper mill in Rioupéroux, steel and synthetic iron production in Livet, aluminum production in Rioupéroux, and calcium carbide production in Gavet with the CUAEM group. This space also highlights the social and territorial impact of this industrial activity on the hamlets of Livet, Rioupéroux and Gavet, and on the daily lives of their inhabitants. Meet up with your guide at the car park 2 km after the altiport on the road up to the Col de Sarenne. A short downhill walk (1/2 hour) takes you to the start of the via ferrata, which is in an untamed part of the magnificent Sarenne gorges. If you're lucky enough, you'll see some marmots before you get to the top of the plateau. This is a great choice for a first via ferrata climbing experience!! Oulles is one of the smallest villages in the Alps, with fewer than a dozen year-round residents. Nestling at the top end of a valley, it offers breathtaking views over the Grandes Rousses, the Meije and the Barre des Ecrins. If you climb a little higher above the village, you will be rewarded with an even greater view. Located at an altitude of 1400 m on the Massif du Taillefer, Oulles Is the least populated village in Isère. The road leading up to the village is a sign of the sheer steepness of the surrounding mountains. Locals even say that it is so steep around Oulles that the inhabitants used to shoe their chickens! But it all adds to the charm of the village. Oulles has only been accessible to vehicles via this road cut into the rockface since 1963. Immense effort was required to claw back these 7 kilometres of switchbacks from the mountainside - a miracle to create a path out of such a steep mountainside. All this gives you an idea of this incredible road that leads to the little village of Oulles, intact and with unspoilt charm, looming out of the past… (The road is narrow and winding, so drive carefully). A wide range of mountain activities can be enjoyed in Oulles. Cycling, for example, up the 7 km of switchbacks, although the climb is very pleasant on this wooded mountainside, protected from the wind. Hiking with the family on the path to Ornon or slightly more challenging hiking up to the Taillefer mountain hut, as well as the Grand Galbert, Lac du Poursollet, the summit of the Taillefer, Lac Fourchu, Puy d'Oulles and others. All this can also be explored and enjoyed in winter on snow shoes and ski touring. Last but not least, a mountain biking path starts from the village on the Chemin de Malaine, although it is suited to experienced mountain bikers, as there are 84 switchbacks over the 680 m descent! Les Grandes Rousses, La Meije, La Barre des Ecrins, the view is breathtaking. It's what you can see from Oulles, this tiny village at the end of a narrow road Oisans. Located in the mountains of Taillefer, 1400 m, the village of Oulles is the least populated of the department. The road carved into a steep wall is a good introduction, the country is very steep. And this is part of its charm.

To observe black grouse in summer, you need to get up early. In France, black grouse (or blackcocks) can only be found in the Alps. In spring, the male with its black plumage and lyre-shaped tail with white under-tails parades to attract females. In winter, they spend most of their time in igloos dug out of the snow to protect themselves from the cold. This is a particularly sensitive period because they cannot replenish the energy used up when they must leave their igloos suddenly if an off-piste skier or show-shoe hiker passes by.

Near Ornon, the route regularly unveils slate deposits. These black rock sheets are commonplace here. Slate was for a long time mined, providing a certain amount of prosperity to the village. A century ago, 9 quarries employed 250 people. The slate was used for roofs, but their quality was much in demand, and sometimes was exported. The quarries were worked in the winter, since the workers were farmers the rest of the year. Industrial materials began to compete with natural slate, and mining came to a halt in about 1950.

Ornon sits just below the mountain pass of the same name (marking the natural boundary between Oisans and the Valbonnais), in a lovely site featuring a wide variety of scenery, from woods to the Taillefer plateau. A whole mosaic of crops and vegetable gardens surround the mountain hamlets, which are full of heritage charm. The peace and quiet are enchanting, while being close to Bourg d'Oisans and the Oisans ski resorts. The main village in the Lignarre valley, Ornon stretches along the torrent in several hamlets. Its territory stretches over 2000m of vertical drop, from the Lignarre at Clot de Barme to the summit of Taillefer. The Col d'Ornon was once a much-frequented pass... in ancient times. It linked the Drac valley to the Lautaret and Montgenèvre passes, avoiding Lake Saint-Laurent (now the Bourg d'Oisans plain) and the Romanche gorges. The prehistoric path, passing through Ornon, Venosc, Mont-de-Lans, Le Freney d'Oisans and La Grave, then became a Roman road. Roman tombs dating from the Late Empire (3rd and 4th centuries AD) have also been found. At the pass, the small downhill ski station, for all levels, and the Nordic ski area, in the forest, offer the chance to enjoy winter sports away from the crowds. While hundreds of sheep graze on the edges of the plateau, higher up, on the nearby crests and summits, chamois and rock ptarmigan may be seen. These animals are the emblems of high altitudes, with the first nicknamed the “goat of the rocks", and the rock ptarmigan sometimes known as the “snow partridge". If you want to get a good look at either of them, you must leave them undisturbed: binoculars or a telescope are essential.

This protected bird of prey is one of the rarest in Europe. You are most likely to spot on at the hottest time of the day, when you might notice its silhouette high in the sky as it twists and turns in pursuit of its prey. The Lignarre valley is the territory of a pair of golden eagles, which you can sometimes see when the sun is high in the sky. The pair do not produce young every year, sometimes preferring to glide through the air rather than prepare for the arrival of chicks. And then one year, the female will lay two eggs, which are incubated primarily by her. Very often only one eaglet survives. It fledges in late July, identifiable by white at the base of its tail and white wing markings.

A small owl living in original boreal forest, it nests in stands of conifers where black woodpeckers and spotted woodpeckers have left their nests. At dusk, it hunts small mammals and nestlings. During the day, hidden and motionless in its nest or in clumps of lichen hanging from the branches of fir trees, it dozes but keeps a watchful eye on you without you being aware of it.

The extreme conditions of humidity, acidity and cold holding sway on the lake plateaux mean that organic matter is not fully broken down, so it builds up in hollows to form peat. Peat bogs are extremely useful. They are remarkable, rare, fragile and extremely precious habitats that are characterised by exceptional biodiversity. Here you can find rare species that are adapted to these difficult living conditions (high humidity, low temperatures, poor soils). The most common plant is peat moss (sphagnum) - real sponges that can stock up to 30 times their own weight in water! Peat bogs also play the role of a filter by purifying the air and water. They reduce erosion, help renew the phreatic zones, naturally store carbon and protect from flooding and drought. Under threat from human activity and climate change, this natural heritage is monitored closely.

Nicknamed “bog cotton", common cottongrass grows in wet and acidic soils, such as the peat bogs of the Taillefer. Common cottongrass, like the rock ptarmigan or the mountain hare, are fragile species, the remnants of a glacial climate and still living in the mountain range. It is a cotton-like plant with white plumes, and fruit gathered into a single, quite thick ball. The smooth stalk is round, unlike the other species of cottongrass, which are triangular.

The refuge is located in this unique setting; the path accessible for all ages. Please note: this site has been awarded the Natura 2000 label and is subject to numerous measures to preserve its biodiversity. We therefore invite you to adopt the right reflexes when you come to protect this sensitive area. The landscape here is reminiscent of the northern tundra, dotted with a myriad of small lakes and frog pools. Some of these lakes contain fossilized tree trunks in their sediments, testifying to the presence of the forest here 6,000 years ago. Located at 2,268 m, this small unguarded refuge with no water, electricity or toilet is a call to adventure! Facing due south, it is located in the Écrins National Park, on the path leading to the Rochail summit. PRESENTATION Perched at an altitude of 2,268 meters, the Refuge des Sources is a small, unguarded 20 m² hut nestled in the Ecrins National Park, in the commune of Villard-Notre-Dame. Approximately 3 hours' walk from the village, it overlooks the Vallon torrent and offers a breathtaking view of the Oisans. This communal refuge, with its rustic authenticity, is an ideal stopover for backpackers or mountain lovers in search of adventure. CAPACITY AND FACILITIES Rustic in character, this small communal hut offers the most rudimentary comforts. It comprises 6 mattresses, blankets, a table and benches. Capacity: 6 people Equipment available: 6 mattresses with blankets, a table, benches and stools, basic kitchen utensils. NO RUNNING WATER, ELECTRICITY OR TOILETS Note: the wood-burning stove is out of order and the use of fire is strictly forbidden inside. A guestbook is at your disposal. At 2100 meters, the refuge of La Pra, close to the many clear lakes of the Massif Belledonne, will delight anglers, hikers and families. La Pra is also a wonderful pasture where you can encounter marmots, wild sheep and ibex. The refuge is a stopover on the GR 738 from Chamrousse. The surrounding peaks are often accessible in summer, either on footpaths or "off-track" for those who prefer less frequented areas (Vaudaine, Doménon, Croix de Belledonne sectors), as soon as the snow has disappeared. You are entering a Natura 2000 protected area where swimming in rivers and lakes is strictly prohibited. From the Pré Raymond parking lot, take the forest road, then a path to the left (south-east). A few hairpin bends bring you to an almost level path leading out of the forest. Cross the stream before reaching the dam and Lac du Crozet. Follow the path along the lake and up the Vallon de Mercier to the Col de la Pra. At the col, turn right (south) and descend to the refuge, 5 minutes from the col de la Pra. From Chamrousse, from the parking lot at the foot of the Grande Aiguille, follow the GR de Pays, then pass between the lakes (GR 738). Climb slightly before descending into the combe de l'Echaillon. Turn left onto the path leading to the Oursière waterfalls, then right onto the path leading to Lac David. Climb up to Lac Léama, then on to Lac Longet and Lac Claret. Climb up to the refuge. From the Recoin de Chamrousse, take the GR 738 to Lac Robert. Then follow the same route as the Croix de Chamrousse.

Bivouac and caravan area open all year round. Tent camping is possible on the grassland. Located in the center of the site, next to the playground, you will find an electrical hookup and sanitary facilities. The parking is located in the village centre, next to Town Hall, nordic area playgrounds and two minutes from the road to the waterfall, the via ferrata. The caravan area has power and drinking water supply and toilet and drain area. You must use a gas heater, the electrical power is not strong enough for an electric device. We accept caravan all year round. No RV dump station (you can drain in the toilets). From the 15th of june 2025, you will find a new sanitary block, with a surface of 18m2, which contain : - 2 individual shower rooms, each equipped with a washbasin and mirror - 2 toilet cubicles (1 male, 1 female) with hand-washing sinks - 1 separate dishwashing area with 2 sinks, worktops, and 4 mixer taps Cassette toilet filling and emptying is possible in the sanitary block toilets. Payment is to be made on site in cash or by cheque (plus tourist tax), or directly at the town hall. In winter, snow removal is provided and a free shuttle service takes you to the ski slopes during school holidays and weekends.
