This trail takes you on a journey back in time - to around 7,000 years ago - starting from the village of Cuiry-lès-Chaudardes. In the 1970s, this cillage - and others in the vicinity in this part of the Aisne valley - became the subject of archaeological research and acquired a real scientific reputation. In the wake of these experimental practices, a first Neolithic village was rebuilt, but unfortunately destroyed by fire a few years later. So it's thanks to a new initiative by the local council that we have this new prehistoric house (rebuilt on a smaller scale), along with explanatory panels detailing the settlement and way of life of these sedentary farmers, who settled here 5,000 years before our era... This loop on the road and through the fields will then take you to the nearby village of Chaudardes, before returning to your starting point...

From marshes to rivers or waterfalls, from woods to crops, the Sarrins' walk evolves between the villages of Roucy, Guyencourt and Bouffignereux. The first one has a feudal mound, a church of the Reconstruction and an old priory, the second one a restored wash-house, the last one a church with a portal of the 13th century and a farm-castle.

Head for the outskirts of Beaurieux, a charming hilltop village just off the Chemin des Dames! This excursion will take you to its heights for a walk in the fresh air, filled with vast open spaces and superb panoramas. As far as history is concerned, this commune - and the Aisne valley in general - is a key site for European archaeology, revealing Neolithic, Protohistoric and Gallo-Roman remains thanks to intensive excavations since the 1970s (a Protohistoric Iron Age enclosure and a Gallo-Roman villa have been unearthed here). And just for the record, even though the commune was spared more than others in the area by the fighting of the 14-18 war, it was nonetheless helped by Winnipeg in its reconstruction. Indeed, the Canadian capital of the province of Manitoba wanted this to serve as a reminder of its links with the Marquette family (Claude, brother of Jacques Marquette, discoverer of the Mississippi in the 17th century, was Lord of Beaurieux...).  So enjoy your visit to this place steeped in history!

This limestone grassland, located on the right bank of the Aisne valley 26 km south-east of Laon, is, according to the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels (CEN) des Hauts-de-France, which manages it, one of the "most original natural habitats in the department [of Aisne]". It lies close to the communes of Oeuilly and Pargnan and is part of the Coteaux du Chemin des Dames Regional Nature Reserve (RNR). In terms of flora and fauna, connoisseurs will be able to spot Hyssop officinale - the only place in Picardy where you can find this southern plant! - or see the dreaded Mantis religiosa in the tall grasses!

In the heart of one of the most tragic battlefields of the First World War, discover a path steeped in history which, through mountains and valleys, will offer you superb panoramas.

At 6 a.m. on April 16, 1917, troops of the French 1st Corps launched an assault on what is undoubtedly the most formidable position on the Chemin des Dames. Since the beginning of the war, the German on a plateau overlooking the village of Craonne. According to General Nivelle's plans, this position should have been retaken in a matter of hours. In fact, it was only partially recaptured during the attack of May 5 1917.

It is estimated that billions of letters were exchanged over more than four years between the soldiers on the front line and their families. Early on, the military high command understood that the exchange of mail allowed the men to hold out longer. In a company, the vagamaster is undoubtedly the most expected man every single day. As he braves the danger, he has to carry the news from the trenches to the first lines.

This short trail takes us on a search for the remains of the old village of Craonne, made famous by the mutineers' song, which was completely razed to the ground during the war and rebuilt below a few years later. This moving itinerary is punctuated by a few information panels which allow us to find the traces of the old village and its inhabitants, but also to learn about botany.

An exceptional site that this troglodytic place... From the original hearth to the shelter during the conflicts through the extraction of the stone, this fantastic place contains in the depths of its stone all the history of the region.

The view from the Dragon's Cave esplanade down to the Aisne valley below is so beautiful that it's hard to imagine that this was a hellish place during the First World War... This short circuit - after a walk of around 200 metres along the Chemin des Dames, which is not much fun because of the traffic - will allow you to feel the steepness of the terrain and to think about the poor fate of those who set out to attack it. You'll come across one of the many ‘destroyed villages’ that dot the Chemin des Dames. You can then push on to the nearby village of Oulches and make a loop to get back to your starting point, where you can visit the Visitor Centre - Caverne du Dragon, a place of remembrance on the Chemin des Dames...

Listed as a Historical Monument, the Baroque style Saint-Didier church of Asfeld is the strangest church in Champagne-Ardenne and even in France. It was built at the end of the 17th century on the site of the old church of the village according to the will of the Earl of Avaux Jean-Jacques III of Mesmes. Extravagantly shaped, designed by two talented architects: the Dominican Brother François Romain and Fleury, an architect who lived on the spot. The structural work was completed in 1683. The church was finished, received and blessed in 1685. The plan is quite original since it was imagined in the form of a viola da gamba. Entirely built in bricks, its architecture with colonnades, domes and cupolas is really bold. None of the walls of the building follows a straight line. The church has 138 pillars and columns, a length of 44.82 meters and an outer perimeter of 145 meters. The church also has a 7-stops organ built around 1900 by Clovis Renault. The monument was inaugurated on 5th July 1925. It pays tribute to the children of Herpy-L'Arlésienne who died for their country, and also, which is more unusual, to the "French soldiers who fell in battle in the Municipality."

The destiny that took Verlaine to Juniville is the story of his life and his work. After a tumultuous two-year period with Rimbaud which took him to London and Brussels and led to his imprisonment in Mons, Paul Verlaine returned to the Ardennes to soothe his heart. At the Lion d’Or inn, he wrote and finished the collection of poems entitled ‘Sagesse’. He also prepared a virulent book there. In this anthology, he was to publish works by poets as yet unknown: Stéphane Mallarmé, Tristan Corbeer and Arthur Rimbaud. In the preface, he introduces the latter as the great genius of poetry. He was to give his work a name intended to shatter his image as a Parnassian poet. ‘Les poètes maudits’ (The Accursed Poets) was to become inextricably linked with the decadent scene and prove a resounding success. His poetry was finally recognised.

This plot of land of 4 hectares, where more than 500 trees have been planted, is called the Promenade des Isles. It has been the site for different public events for several years. The most well-known is the Sainte Anne Fête, which has been held since 1805 at the end of July. For ten days the animation (the cavalcade, the fireworks display, the balls, the fairground attractions) attracts huge crowds, who come from all over the region. We must not forget to mention other public events, which have become traditional too like the horse show, the Foulées Rethéloises (cross-country running race), etc.. The first trees were planted on the meadow here in 1623 on a former cemetery. The town bought the neighbouring meadow (called the Cannevière) to extend the park in 1646. In 1775 the line of trees, which was in the middle, was cut down to create a central walkway. An entrance to the park from the town was made for pedestrians. Since this time the Promenade des Isles has always been used as a meeting place for local festivities.

The former town hall of Rethel, built in 1750, was destroyed on 1st September 1914 in the fire started by the invader on the night of 31st August 1914, as well as three quarters of the town and the archives of the town. The Town Council did not establish an order for the reconstruction of municipal buildings until 13th October 1922, priority being given to schools. Among the 11 projects presented for the new Town Hall, Mr Boulenger’s one (an architect from Reims) was chosen. The building, in Louis XIIIth style, measures 40 meters by 14 and its height is 40 meters too. The materials used (white stone from Vierzy, red brick from Dizy and blue slate) bring out the colours of the national flag on its façade.  The building started in April 1925 and finished in November 1931. The official inauguration took place on 30th April 1933. The monumental staircase at the centre of the façade leads onto a wrought iron portal, the official entrance to the building. The main reception room is entirely covered by paintings of Eugène Thiéry from Rethel. 

The monument is an allegory of Victory, framed by panels bearing the list of Rethel’s civilian and military dead.

Built on the site of a Priory church, this new church is of Gothic style with a high nave and two aisles. After two centuries of conflicts, the inhabitants of Rethel obtained the demolition of their uncomfortable aisle to replace it by a nave of the same dimensions as the monks’ one: the church has therefore two large naves placed side by side. In 1531, a portal opened out onto the town was built. In 1614, the building of the enormous three–tiered tower started to replace the former steeple. Three levels were superimposed in the classical order (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian).  The Revolution and the two World Wars caused great damage to Saint Nicholas church. The restoration works undertaken by the Historical Monuments started in 1941 to finally end in 1994. Guided visits: Wednesdays from June to Sept. at 4pm on the forecourt. Former church of the Benedictine priory founded in 1097 by Hugues Count of Rethel. Its imposing silhouette dominates the landscape several kilometers around and has dimensions out of proportion with the size of the village. The nave is 44 meters long and the campanile is 35 meters above the ground. Wide buttresses form an imposing architecture, no tall bell tower just a small campanile. Inside, you will discover one of the most beautiful organ buffets in Champagne-Ardenne. Dominated by two angels playing the trumpet, its finely carved bas-reliefs represent the various accessories of the music. Another remarkable piece is the pulpit to preach and its pyramidal canopy. The high altar is striking by its size and opulence; it is surrounded by large paintings. The church also houses statues of the 18th century, including a beautiful Virgin and Child.
