At 6 a.m. on April 16, 1917, troops of the French 1st Corps launched an assault on what is undoubtedly
the most formidable position on the Chemin des Dames. Since the beginning of the war, the German
on a plateau overlooking the village of Craonne.
According to General Nivelle's plans, this position should have been retaken in a matter of hours. In fact, it was only partially recaptured during the attack of May 5 1917.
