Description

Follow these hiking trails along the Chemin des Dames for a walk through history: it is hard to imagine that the peaceful, green landscapes you are walking through today bear no resemblance to the hell of the First World War, the scene of terrible battles in 1917 and 1918.

Take, for example, the Vauclair Forest and the Plateau de Californie, iconic sites that were completely devastated and classified as a ‘red zone’ at the end of the conflict. Today, the forest has tripled in size to 1,039 hectares and invites you to contemplate its beauty.

And yet, beneath the cover of restored nature, the past lies just beneath the surface. The forest and the edges of the Plateau de Californie still bear the scars of the fighting, with networks of trenches and shell holes still visible....
