Welcome to Lombez! Lombez is in the department of the Gers which is part of the Toulouse area of Gascony. This small town, with just over 2000 inhabitants, is proud to have such a prestigious past: 500 years with a Benedictine faith abbey, 500 years of being a bishopric which means the area a bishop is in charge of and over a 100 years with the title of sub-prefecture. Lombez has always drawn its wealth from grain farming thanks to the river Save’s alluvium. Treat yourself to a 10 step journey taking you from the cathedral’s forecourt to discover the village huddled around it, so we can enlighten you and answer all your questions about this area.

Start: municipal stadium car park, route de Saiguède, D53B Walk up the path beside the tennis court, then turn left and follow the path (GR86) towards the lake (heading west). Leave the dyke on your left and walk along the lake for about 1km. At the end of the lake, go straight on for about 200m, leave the GR86 and take the path on the left that leads down to the ruisseau de Saint Thomas (south), which you can ford or cross on a new footbridge. When you reach the road, turn left and walk for about 500m, then at the bend in the road at the bottom of a small rise, take the path on the left that overlooks the lake as far as the dyke. Leave the dam on your left and continue along the tarmac track to the D53b road. Turn right and follow the GR86 as far as the village, signposted "le Circuit du lac du Parayré". After 300m, turn left onto "le chemin du Barrat" for 500m. Follow the red and white GR86 signs. When you reach the village, follow the lane to the junction with the D632, admire the well and take the main road to the right: view of the market hall and the church of Ste Foy, cross the D632, pass the market hall, the pond and reach the water tower to take the circuit of the Lac de Parayre.

Works of art are installed in the middle of nature, on a hiking trail, for the pleasure of young and old curious. This walk invites you to take a close and artistic look at the natural environment. The artistic creation was entrusted to Coline Vergez, a local artist already well known in Simorre. His reflection on rural art and environmental concerns lead him to work with local artists and artisans for the realization of his 5 works and the signage of the course, using sustainable materials and/ or recovery. A 106 kilometer road itinerary designed to help you discover the Garonne river valley from village to village. The easy slopes involved allow family outings or enjoying doing it with friends. This cycling itinerary allows you to go from Cierp-Gaud, in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, to Carbonne, by following the Garonne River. It's in the Comminges, former Gascony province where the Garonne grows bigger. From being simply a fast stream in the Pyrenees to becoming a branch river and finally a major waterway... Several access points are possible all along this itinerary. Don't miss stopping along the way to see picturesque villages such as Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, Saint-Gaudens or even Saint-Martory.

A veritable green lung, the Eaunes Wood ZNIEFF provides a link via the soft paths of the via Garona and the Muretains hillsides to the Clarté Dieu d'Eaunes abbey. A "nature walk" offering views of the Pyrenees and a chance to meet Sylviane Perret, a ceramist and sculptor inspired by the world of minerals. A stone's throw from the route, come and meet Attel'toi and its carriage horses for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. And after such a walk, what could be better than a little refreshment in the abbey park thanks to Aqua Elna, a water park and water games?

Opposite the town hall, turn right into rue des Jardins. Go straight ahead and take the Chemin de Coste Brulade. Turn left and join the D17, a safe path runs alongside the main road. Cross the bridge over the Garonne and after the roundabout at the entrance to Ondes, take the 1st left. At the end, turn left and then 1st right. Follow the path around the houses and then back to the track alongside the main road. This will take you to the Lycée Agricole.

At the border with the Ariège, turn right onto the D7G as far as the village of Le Plan. 12. Go through the village and at the exit, cross the bridge to the left and turn left 70m after the bridge. 13. At the end of the Chemin du Comte, turn right onto the D7 as far as the village of Couladère. 14. At the roundabout, take the second exit on the left and then, 200 m further on, turn left again onto the D49. 15. At the end of the road, turn right onto the D49D, then follow signs for Mauran by turning left onto the D62. 16. Turn slightly left towards the centre of the village of Mauran.

Following the extension of the Canal du Midi, this itinerary allows both cyclists and hikers to discover some of the picturesque aspects of the Canal de Garonne, frequently used by canal-barges and rich in its historical heritage. This is an ideal cycling trail for biking with your children or among friends, having no particular difficulties involved. The Canal du Garonne locks are characterized by their perfectly parallel lateral sides (called “bajoyers” which are the masonry containment walls of the lock) that are unlike the locks of the Canal du Midi which are oval shaped. They were all built in 1840 at the time when the canal was dug and these locks were changed to the Fraycinet standards in 1973 in order to allow 38 metres barges to pass through. It is possible to begin anywhere on the cycle path along the canal which has signs indicating its direction from Toulouse. Along the way you can discover the town of Grenade, a former bastide with its magnificent covered marketplace.

Founded in 1142, Boulaur Abbey depended on Fontrevrault. From its origins until the French Revolution, it was a monastery for noble girls. All that remains of the twelfth-century convent buildings is the ground floor of the large dormitory with the chapter house and the passageway leading to the garden, in accordance with the common plan of monasteries following the rule of Saint Benedict. All that remains of the original church are some walls and a Romanesque doorway. Partly rebuilt in the 14th century, the church contains paintings attributed to the school of Giotto, whose finesse and originality of decoration make the church of Boulaur unique and a remarkable example of 14th-century art. Today it houses a community of Cistercian nuns, Their life is regulated by singing and working in the fields on a small farm, whose products they process and sell in their monastic shop (jams, pâtés, flour and cheese). Guided tours of the abbey every day (except Tuesdays) at 11am and 4pm. Possibility of attending liturgical services sung in Gregorian chant. A charming village, with its fortified church, its old central market hall, its museum, its half-timbered and corbelled houses, its foirail and shady squares that invite you to visit. Simorre surprises and amazes. The atmosphere of this small village is pleasant, as are the friendly musical nights in the square opposite the Bouche à Oreille. A little history: The village's picturesque narrow streets are particularly striking for their impressive fortified church, which rises up between the roofs of the houses and gives the impression of taking a trip back to the heart of the Middle Ages. After a devastating fire in 1141, the village, formerly the capital of Astarac, was rebuilt around the abbey, and the whole complex was fortified in the 12th century. To resist the Count of Astarac, the abbots constantly improved their abbey, which was given a cloister, an octagonal bell tower and extended to the west. The Abbey Church, an architectural jewel: A masterpiece of brickwork lost in the Astarac of stone. Dedicated to Notre Dame, it was built on the site of the previous church, which may have extended further west, as work carried out in 1900 uncovered remains of the construction in the extension of the current nave. Major restoration work was carried out between 1844 and 1858 under the direction of Viollet-le-Duc. The roof, which covered the walls, was lowered so that it rested directly on the vaults, and a crenellation was built around the building. ‘Simorre, a slow and committed commune! It belongs to the network of the national Cittaslow label’.

The Church of Simorre is a 14th-century abbey church built on a 5th-century oratory created by Cérats, who became the patron saint of Simorre. This church was linked to the Benedictine abbey, which has now completely disappeared. Built in the shape of a Latin cross, it has an octagonal tower at the junction of the nave and transept, which should have been a bell tower like Lombez cathedral. The nave has only two and a half bays and is finished off by a stone wall. Almost the entire building is in pink brick. The stained glass windows are remarkable for their age, colour and design (14th, 15th and 16th centuries). The 16th-century choir stalls have beautiful and moving sculpted details, particularly on the cheeks. In 1964, during restoration work in the sacristy, some very fine 14th-century wall paintings were discovered. Today, you can admire many religious objects, both simple and sumptuous, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are 4 statues to admire: a wooden piéta from the early 8th century, a stone piéta from the 7th century, a statue of St Cérats from the 15th century and a processional cross from the 14th century. In the 19th century, Violet le Duc undertook the restoration of the building, changing its appearance and transforming it into a fortified church. A document with historic details is available inside as well as signs on the walls. An audio tour in French has been recorded and is available in the church.
