Evoking Lourdes in the Middle Ages is a historical itinerary reminding the medieval city of Lorda, former name of Lourdes, protected by its two rows of fortifications with twelve towers and nestled at the bottom of the fortified castle – place of residence of the counts of Bigorre since the 11th century. This itinerary, partly virtual, transports the visitors some centuries back. The illustrated boards present a retrospective overview of the medieval city of Lourdes. A loop at the foot of the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees to prepare for slightly more mountainous routes. Depart from Montréjeau-Gourdan-Polignan station towards Pointis de Rivière, Ardiège and Barbazan. Then you reach Loures Barousse for a ride through the Barousse valley with some nice hills. After St-Bertrand de Comminges, the route is flat back to the starting point.

A loop at the foot of the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees with beautiful hills on country roads. Departure from Montréjeau-Gourdan-Polignan station towards St-Bertrand de Comminges. You will pass close to the Gargas caves. You will tackle a series of hills (Montoussé, St-Arroman, Mazouau, Hèches, Col de Coupe).

When the weather is hot, several beaches along the Garonne are ideal for relaxing. They are perfect for a picnic. In the distance, you can admire the magnificent cathedral of St-Bertrand de Comminges. There are many beaches where you can take a break.

VELOSUD in Haute-Garonne: The route that runs along the Pyrenees, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean by bike! In Haute-Garonne, coming from Lannemezan, you enter via Saint-Bertrand de Comminges and then Saint-Gaudens. Then continue from Roquefort-sur-Garonne towards the Salat valley to reach the Ariège (Saint-Girons). A pleasant route, often on dedicated cycle paths, with spectacular scenery.

Hike around the episcopal city of Saint-Bertrand de Comminges. A stone's throw away is the Lespugues chasm, a geological curiosity. This hike in the Piedmont region includes a fairly steep climb up to the Mail du Hard, but it does not present any particular difficulty for hikers accustomed to this type of trail. Before setting off, please note that you will have a steep climb of about 20 minutes.

The development of Lourdes is connected to pilgrims’ trains. On March 9, 1866 the station was inaugurated and the first steam engine reached Lourdes on March 27. In 1887, the definitive station was finished with its metallic structure and its 92 meters long platforms. For the fiftieth anniversary of the Apparitions, up to 300 000 pilgrims came to Lourdes by train, the beginnings of the arrival of countless crowds on the 20th century.

In the hospice, Bernadette Soubirous attended religious instruction classes before the Apparitions. On June 3, 1858 she did there her first holy communion. After the Apparitions, she was admitted as a boarder to protect her against visitors’ harassment and to get an education. Finally, she left definitely Lourdes on July 4, 1866 to join Saint-Gildard convent in Nevers.

The baptismal basin, made of marble from Lourdes, is dated from the Roman ages. Bernadette Soubirous was baptised on 9 January 1844 over these basins which were originally in the former Saint-Pierre church.

The construction of the Sacré-Cœur parish church started in 1875 on the request of Abbot Peyramale. It was inaugurated in 1903 and the bell tower was finished in 1936. Abbot Peyramale’s grave can be seen in the crypt.

On March 25, 1858 Bernadette transmitted here in Occitan to Abbot Peyramale the words of the Apparition: « I am the Immaculate Conception ». In 1973, the descendants of Lacour, owners of the building since 1922, transferred it to the city of Lourdes which established there the community library until 2007. The building keeps untouched one part of the wall of its old garden as well as the door through which Bernadette went in.

In the old times, the road crossed the Lapacca River on the Arrieux Bridge and climbed up the “rue Basse”. In 1844 was built the “chaussée Maransin” to avoid this steep section. The Lapacca River, underground since 1883, flows under the square and the boulevard towards the Gave River. Its course allowed to operate some watermills. The Lapacca square became Jeanne d’Arc square after her beatification in 1909.

The Roman church was built in the 11th century and housed a necropolis of sarcophaguses made of stone from the Béout. It was destroyed in 1904-1907 because the authorities judged that it was too small and too antiquated to foster the crowds coming to Lourdes. Its furniture, such as some decorative elements, is preserved in the Musée Pyrénéen. In 1991, the foundations of a square tower and a crossing point of antic ways were found.

At the bottom of the “rue Basse” was the gate tower of the north entrance of Lourdes. People entered into the city by the Enjouan slope to arrive at the Arrieux Bridge where this gate tower was standing. It was destroyed in 1804. Up the Lapacca river is still a tower of the 13th century, the last vestige of a fortified county watermill.

The fountain of the three nozzles is the oldest fountain in Lourdes, representing the lively centre of the city in the Middle Ages. It was modified in 1811. In 1881, the municipality council decided to renovate it totally. Three copper nozzles were installed to regulate its flow, thus giving it its name: “la fontaine aux trois becs” (the fountain of the three nozzles). Today it still keeps its features of 1881.

This half tower, situated in the southwest angle of the first fortification row in front of the defence line, was built on a small cliff and dominated the market square. The fortification wall had been opened for the alley but it is still present in the wall of the building facing it. There is also a turret surrounded by a small garden, from the Jerusalem Hospitallers’ house.

In fact, as we only have one dormitory, we haven't always been able to promise a safe space when asked. That's why we'd like to tell you how our project has evolved, in line with our values and the needs we've identified. A more suitable and cosy space. With a view to reopening in 2025, we are going to reorganise the space so that we have a larger, more welcoming dormitory, as well as a private room that can accommodate a couple/family or a small group of friends. We would like to make our space available for mixed periods for women and LGBT+ people, so that we can welcome them in a more inclusive, respectful and secure facility.
