Monein is characterized by its double face, a historical heart and rural districts, spread over 8000 ha. The town center of Monein has the largest Gothic church in Bearn, the church of Saint-Girons. It is impressive by the size of its bell tower and unique by its asymmetrical frame with double hull of reversed ship. In the past, the wine of Jurançon was called the wine of Monein. One could almost say that Monein is the stronghold of the Jurançon vineyard. Moreover, 60% of the production of Jurançon is made in Monein. It is thus the privileged place to go to meet the wine growers. The interpretation path, marked out with 5 panels, will lead you to the discovery of the history of Monein. From the Casterasses, you can imagine the view that the Viscounts of Bearn had from the top of their keep.

This peaceful interpretation trail will lead you to discover the Saligue, a typical vegetation found in the wetlands of the Gave de Pau. Along the way, you will find interpretation stations that will allow you to learn more about this heritage and its history. Halfway through the loop, you can enjoy a moment of relaxation with a picnic area and a playground for children at the Denguin sports field Departure : Siros Stadium Yellow pedestrian markings.

This loop will take you to the heart of the saligue, which designates the typical vegetation that covers all the wetlands of the Gave de Pau. After passing the "Plaine des sports", where you will find a picnic area, the scenery changes. You will find yourself in the open air in the middle of cultivated fields with a view of the Pyrenees. The estate is in Cuqueron, a village near Monein, on the top of the Béarnaise hillsides and in the heart of the Jurançon vineyard AOC region. The vineyard stretches out over seven hectares on the hillside. The setting is ideal for optimal maturation, helped by the region’s mild climate. Thanks to the rustic nature of the Manseng varieties, for over five generations, the Riuné family, has been able to create a quality Jurançon with good aging potential using traditional methodology.

On the slopes of Monein, near Pau and in the heart of the Jurançon AOC. The Guirardel family has been producing wine since before the birth of Henri IV. Over the centuries, they became attached to their property, practicing mixed farming. In the 19th century, the family began shipping wine throughout Europe. The four-century-old winery offers exceptional aging conditions. Today, the Guirardels carefully cultivate their 5 ha vineyard. South-facing, the vines are sheltered in a cirque facing the Pyrenees. This unique terroir, combined with traditional winemaking methods, has produced wines of recognized quality for over two centuries. Owned by the Casaubieilh family for ten generations, this small 5-hectare estate on the slopes of Monein was taken over in 2020 by Marjolaine de Coninck.

At the foot of the hillsides of Cuqueron, a village adjoining Monein and in the heart of the Jurançon AOC region, the Château de Cuqueron is a building of great character which was restored in the 17th century. Nestled on the South side of the hill and well rooted in the draining ‘puddingstone’ Pyrénéen pebbles, the château’s vines benefit from exceptional soil, which is ideal to create a sublime Petit Manseng, the only grape variety produced here for Jurançon. Since 1324, the castle has been an important part of local history, mixing tradition and modernity. The estate also produces Roussanne peaches in season.

At the foot of the water tower, at the exit of the village, you will find a picnic table.

Les biquettes de Bellevue farm is at Clos Bellevue in Cuqueron, a Jurançon AOC wine growing estate. The owner Yémina started up outside, in the open air on the Béarnaise hillsides in April 2019. After five years working amongst the goats, she launched her own breeding and cheese making business. Yémina is always delighted to introduce visitors to the world of goat keeping and will happily share her passion for her goats and provide tastings of her different home produced goats cheeses.
