This advanced-level route is reserved for experienced cyclists (and mountain bikers). It will take you through idyllic spots and along paths typical of our region, passing by washhouses, churches, and sunken paths. The Fort Moville washhouse, located halfway along the route, is an ideal spot to take a break, so don’t forget to bring a snack if you’d like to have a picnic.

At the start of this route that takes you along the banks of streams and fountains, you will pass through the charming village of Bonneville-la-Louvet with its striking church, half-timbered buildings, wash house and coloured brick buildings.

Although the Pays d’Auge has few forests, the paths are lined with several trees. Make the most of this route that takes you from the centre of Saint-Philbert-des-Champs, across the countryside and two small woods offering ever-changing colours over the seasons.

The Brévedent washhouse is a stream-fed washhouse, supplied by the Le Chaussey stream. This washhouse was built in 1903 thanks to funds provided by the mayor of the commune of Le Faulq and was subsequently transferred to the commune of Brévedent. A few years later, in 1910, the shelter located a few metres from the washhouse was built. This shelter, which can still be seen today, allowed the washerwomen to take shelter there during heavy rain or to eat their meals. Unfortunately, the washhouse was destroyed in 1931 due to severe flooding during the winter. It was rebuilt in 1933. Finally, in 2022, the washhouse was restored to its former glory. It is completely open on all four sides and is mainly built of brick, notably the floor, the washboard, the low wall and the steps leading up to it. The washhouse is approximately 10 metres long. The washhouse’s timber framework rests on six posts: three of them are fixed directly into the low brick wall, whilst the other three are secured by limestone flashings. The structure supports the gabled roof, which is covered in slate. If you look closely at the stream, you cannot fail to notice the sluice gate system, supported by cement masonry, which is still clearly visible today. This mechanism was used to regulate the water level. Furthermore, the remains of a washstone are still visible beneath the water. During your visit, you’ll be able to see this wash house by the water’s edge; it’s easily accessible on foot, by bike or by car (car park nearby). You’ll also find the church right nearby to round off your walk.

The washhouse at Saint-Philbert-des-Champs, built in 1906, has a distinctive appearance and history. This washhouse consists of a large rectangular concrete basin and a washing platform with its original clay floor. There is also a low brick wall surrounding the basin. Bricks and concrete blocks lie scattered in front of the basin. These masonry elements are probably the remains of an old basin adjoining the main one. The washhouse is not covered and, as far as we know, never has been. The washhouse is supplied with water by the Fontaine des Boudards (or Fontaine d’Anjou). On closer inspection of the basin, a hole can be seen indicating the presence of a pipe connected to a stream that ran close to the washhouse, serving as a second water supply. Other remains found around the washhouse suggest that the stream may have been diverted to feed the basin. However, in the year following the washhouse’s construction, local residents and councillors noticed a significant design flaw. The water flow was abnormal and the water struggled to flow into the basin. As a result, the locals never used this washhouse to wash their clothes. They simply came there to fetch drinking water. Situated near a walking trail, accessible on foot or by bike, you cannot fail to notice this structure, which stands out for its interesting features and unique history. Furthermore, do not hesitate to stop off at the Brévedent wash house, located a few kilometres away.

The newly restored washhouse at Blangy-le-Château dates back to the early 20th century, according to the Calvados departmental archives. The washhouse consists of a rectangular basin made of brick and cement, with two long washing boards divided into two areas. A third area, not overlooking the basin, could have been used for drying laundry on trestles. The structure of the washhouse is made of wood. The structure rests on eight posts fixed to the ground by cement flashings covered with bricks to hold and support the whole. The washhouse is enclosed on two sides by plank cladding and is approximately 10.50 metres long. It is the last remnant of the semi-open area of this size! The roof is covered with slate over the entire frame. The washhouse is located near a water catchment point. A diversion canal carries the water to the basin, which is then drained into the stream. The sluice system used here to hold back and drain the water is particularly interesting and bears witness to a certain ingenuity. As you stroll through the village, you'll discover a wash-house that has been completely restored, while preserving its authenticity and old-fashioned details, all in a calm and peaceful setting. It is easily accessible from the village on foot, by bike or by car (parking nearby). What's more, you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the remains of the village's ancient castle, just a few steps away.

The wash-house at Blangy-le-Château (near the old mill) is rather unusual. It is attached to a house along the water. This type of washhouse, known as a "run-of-river", is fairly common throughout the region. Set alongside the river, these washhouses blend in perfectly with the landscape and are simple to build. There are no basins, and the washing boards, of which there are two here, are placed directly in the stream. The washboards are connected to a small staircase, which in turn is connected to a small cement path that runs along the edge of the stream, providing access to the washboards. The floor, which is probably original, is made of rammed earth and cement. The wash-house is not covered and has probably never been covered. Fed by Le Chaussey, this stream is governed by a system of gates to regulate the flow of water, which can still be seen today. As you stroll through the village, keep your eyes peeled for this unusual and unique washhouse. It's easy to get to on foot, by bike or by car (parking nearby). Just a stone's throw from the washhouse, you can also visit the church and the ruins of the castle!

Blangy-le-Château is one of those small Norman villages we love so much. The village nestles in the Chaussey valley, overlooked by wooded hills. The main street is filled with colorful half-timbered and brick houses. The Coq Hardis inn is the oldest building in the village, dating back to the 16th century. As you walk along, you'll realize that water is a key feature of the village, with path names such as chemin des fontaines, le vieux lavoir and ..... Near the washhouse is a pretty thatched cottage. These green-roofed houses are part of Normandy's charm! Tip: come in the spring to see the iris blooming at the top of the thatched cottages! Did you know that the rhizomes of these flowers regulate the humidity level of the ridge and keep everything in place? At the beginning of the 20th century, the girls' school was at the top of the village (the post office building) and the boys' school at the bottom, next to the gendarmerie. The former gendarmerie is a brick building (opposite the town hall). You'll easily recognize it, as the inscription is still there. On the evening of a full moon, we advise you not to wander around at the foot of the castle ruins... You might encounter Claire's ghost. The castle was destroyed during the 100 Years' War.

The washhouse at Le Breuil-en-Auge (in the hamlet of Ecorcheville), which is almost entirely original, was built in 1879. This washhouse was built by the municipality of Saint-Philbert-des-Champs following the transfer of the plots of land around the Ecorcheville fountain by the municipality of Le Breuil-en-Auge. The washhouse now belongs to the same municipality. It is one of three L-shaped washhouses in the area. This one is, however, rather unusual as the ‘L’ wing is quite short (3.70 metres), unlike other washhouses of this type. The washhouse is situated below road level. It consists of a large rectangular concrete basin bordered by a natural embankment and washing boards on two sides. The timber framework is in very good condition. It rests on six posts fixed to concrete plinths to support the structure. A beam is fixed to one of the posts and was used to hang out the washing to dry. The structure is covered by a roof of nailed slate. The washhouse is supplied by a spring that has been converted into a fountain located nearby. A valve system is still present in the basin. Do feel free to stop by this washhouse whilst out and about, whether by car or on a bike, to take a closer look at its features.
