The washhouse at Le Breuil-en-Auge (in the hamlet of Ecorcheville), which is almost entirely original, was built in 1879.
This washhouse was built by the municipality of Saint-Philbert-des-Champs following the transfer of the plots of land around the Ecorcheville fountain by the municipality of Le Breuil-en-Auge. The washhouse now belongs to the same municipality. It is one of three L-shaped washhouses in the area. This one is, however, rather unusual as the ‘L’ wing is quite short (3.70 metres), unlike other washhouses of this type. The washhouse is situated below road level. It consists of a large rectangular concrete basin bordered by a natural embankment and washing boards on two sides. The timber framework is in very good condition. It rests on six posts fixed to concrete plinths to support the structure. A beam is fixed to one of the posts and was used to hang out the washing to dry. The structure is covered by a roof of nailed slate.
The washhouse is supplied by a spring that has been converted into a fountain located nearby. A valve system is still present in the basin.
Do feel free to stop by this washhouse whilst out and about, whether by car or on a bike, to take a closer look at its features.
