Discover the Charm of Aouze, Vosges, Lorraine

This trail helps you discover the thermal history of the Western Vosges. The village of Dolaincourt has a small sulphurous, sodic and arsenic thermal spring, which has been exploited since the middle of the 19th century, in a small yellown wooden building. This small cabin was used as a refreshment room and as a bottling plant until 1914. The village of Vouxey has a beautiful church dating from the 16th century.

This trail is perfect for nature lovers. From the "Maison Forestière du Rendez-Vous" (forest house), you will be able to admire remarkable trees along the path. Amongst others, you will see the Lothar oak, the Douglas-firs and the famous giant sequoia, made remarkable by its height. A stop will be made at the Malovoye fountain, whose name comes from "mal" (wrong) and "avoi", which means "wrong path". During the spring, this spring allows amphibians to come breed.

With this trail, you will discover one of the most important places in the history of Lorraine : Châtenois. In the 11th century, the first Duke of Lorraine, Gerard of Alsace, had a fortified castle perched on the upper part of the town. His wife, Hedwige of Namur, founded a Benedictine priory in 1069, which still dominates the landscape. There are many calvaries along the path, which explains the surname of "Petite Bretagne Lorraine" (Little Brittany in Lorraine) given to this territory. Marking : blue ring

This trail between Rollainville and Fruze is called "La Frézelle" as you will walk along this stream for a while. It enables you to admire the sites classified "Sensitive Natural Area" in the Western Vosges. The images are jostling, in a few metres, the landscape can change quickly. It will be a treat for nature lovers. Breathe, look around, recharge your batteries !

Starting from the picturesque village of Rollainville, labelled "Village fleuri" (Towns and villages in bloom) and awarded "4 flowers", discover the vast forest of Neufeys where history and natural environments intermingle. It is flanked by two valleys at the bottom of which the Frézelle flows to the west and the Sermone stream flows to the east. In this forest, you will find mainly beech trees and a giant sequoia.

Pleasant walk where urban and natural landscaps blend together perfectly. This itinerary will take you through Neufchâteau, town labelled "ville et métiers d'art" (Town of craftsmanship) thanks to its local know-how in the wood and furniture trades. In addition, the town is labelled "Site patrimonial remarquable" (Remarkable heritage site), the first one in the Vosges departement and "Plus Beaux Détours de France" (Most Beautiful Detours of France) in 2017.

This walk will take you in the small village of Rollainville, located deep in a narrow valley on the banks of the Frézelle river and labelled "Village fleuri" (towns and villages in bloom). Discover its architectural heritage : the Roman St. Remy church, the 17th century stone bridges and the calvaries. An exceptional richness not to be missed !

Rollainville is a town that has enormous appeal. From the limestone in most of its architecture to its dry calcaerous grassland, the most important in the Vosges. It is a charming town. This trail allows you to discover various landscapes and to come across a diverse fauna.

This walk is a reflection of the typical Western Vosges flora and fauna. Off the beaten track, you will be surprised by the legend of "la Grotte de l'enfer" (the caves of hell), a place full of history. Those who dare set foot in them will be forever changed by it!

The Meuse Cycle Route / EuroVelo 19 is an international route over 1 000 kilometers long, that follows the Meuse and that links the Langres Plateau, where the river rises in Pouilly-en-Bassigny, to the North Sea. Throughout this route that allow them to take traffic-free voies vertes and small rural roads, the cyclists pass through parts of the Western Vosges territory, between Sartes and Maxey-sur-Meuse. While following the River Mouzon, Meuse affluent that they will see in the territory, they will discover various landscapes and heritage sites. Cycling through valleys and towns of the Western Vosges will allow cyclists to admire many treasures, such as the Roman portal of the church in Pompierre, the limestone cliffs in Circourt-sur-Mouzon or the Château de Bourlemont, perched at the top of the town of Frebécourt. Highlight : the visit of Neufchâteau, Remarkable Heritage Site and town labelled one of the 100 Most Beautiful Detours in France. Immerse yourself in history with a visit to the Aroffe church, built in the early 16th century and completed in 1528, as evidenced by an ancient glass roof that no longer exists. Surrounded by its former cemetery, the church's harmonious architecture features a rectangular floor plan, a majestic bell tower to the west and an elegant pentagonal apse to the east. Inside, let yourself be captivated by the light-filled nave, adorned with superb Gothic windows. Their delicate fillings, composed of three-lobed lancets topped with a variety of motifs - quatrefoils, speckles, drops or three-lobes - offer a refined spectacle to every eye.

Follow the Vair river and the main road n°3 to reach Attignéville and its grassland of the Potelon. Turn toward the centre of the village and follow the indicating signs to arrive on the plateau. The Potelon has been classified as environment of European interest with its preserved vegetation which survived heavy human works. After clearings, the rock's exploitation and the agro-pastoral activities have ensured the preservation of the typical vegetation and of the chalky grasslands. On sunny days, discover the numerous species of butterflies showing the highly diversified life of the environment. More than 200 botanical species and more than 460 total plants and animal species have been identified : golden-chains, red fescues, short-horned grasshoppers or marsh fritillaries.

This church of Flamboyant Gothic style dates from the end of the 15th century. The Romanesque bell tower, dating from the end of the 12th century, was recently restored.

Large parts of the medieval catsle of the de Dommartin family still exist today. Three towers, a door, arrow slits and a 16th century dwelling.

The Saint Martin's parish church dates from the 16th and 17th century. The chor and the funeral chapel of Erard de Dommartin were built at the beginning of the 16th century. The chapel north of the chor was built at the begining of 17th century and then the nave and the bell tower between 1755 and 1757. The funeral chapel is a piece of the art of the early Renaissance in the Lorraine region.

As soon as you arrive, your eye is drawn to two superb 16th-century altarpieces, embedded above the entrance door: a sculpted testimony to the faith and art of yesteryear. Inside, the emotion continues with a delicate 15th-century Madonna and Child, accompanied by statues of St. Nicholas and St. Barbara. The elegantly crafted pulpit completes this spiritual setting. To the right of the church, don't miss the 16th-century cemetery cross. On its shaft, the outraged Christ is striking in its intensity. The calvary, although partially erased by time - the Virgin and St. John having disappeared - retains a touching Virgin and Child on the reverse, the ultimate call to contemplation.

On the heights of Vicherey, near the church, two monuments commemorate the conflicts of the 20th century. Outside the cemetery, overlooking the village of Vicherey and its surrounding valley, a monument catches the eye: it is a stele installed in memory of those who were deported from the area and of civilian victims shot during the Nazi occupation. This stele, inaugurated on 30 September 1990, concerns 16 communes in the area and commemorates 38 inhabitants. Initiated by Maurice Gérard, Father Demange and Gilbert d'Habit, it was brought to this place in April 1990, the granite block having been offered by a granite worker from the Hautes-Vosges. In its upper part, the following quotation can be read: "In the land of the Haut-Saintois, remember, here too the wind of freedom has blown". Nearby, in the cemetery, stands the Vicherey war memorial. This obelisk on a pedestal, with a Latin cross, surrounded by railings and on which are engraved the words “Gloire à nos héros” ("Glory to our heroes"), perpetuates the memory of 20 men who died during the First World War, as well as that of one man who died during the Second World War and one man who died in Algeria.
