Remembrance stele and war memorial in vicherey

On the heights of Vicherey, near the church, two monuments commemorate the conflicts of the 20th century.
Outside the cemetery, overlooking the village of Vicherey and its surrounding valley, a monument catches the eye: it is a stele installed in memory of those who were deported from the area and of civilian victims shot during the Nazi occupation. This stele, inaugurated on 30 September 1990, concerns 16 communes in the area and commemorates 38 inhabitants. Initiated by Maurice Gérard, Father Demange and Gilbert d'Habit, it was brought to this place in April 1990, the granite block having been offered by a granite worker from the Hautes-Vosges. In its upper part, the following quotation can be read: "In the land of the Haut-Saintois, remember, here too the wind of freedom has blown".
Nearby, in the cemetery, stands the Vicherey war memorial. This obelisk on a pedestal, with a Latin cross, surrounded by railings and on which are engraved the words “Gloire à nos héros” ("Glory to our heroes"), perpetuates the memory of 20 men who died during the First World War, as well as that of one man who died during the Second World War and one man who died in Algeria.
