In the forest, all the fantasy of the karst relief unfolds along the way: rock shelters, stone arches, caves… right up to the canoles, rocky notches barely wider than a backpack! Annual closure of access to Canoles from October 1st to November 30th in accordance with the municipal decree of September 25, 2025 n° AR-ADM-2025-17. From the parking area, follow the track towards Canalettes for approximately 2.5 km (crossing two cattle grids). Leave the track to the left and take a path through the woods. After about 170 m, on the right, you'll find a cavity with a hole in the ceiling called "La grotte éclairée" (the illuminated cave). Continue along the marked path until you reach the track. Follow it to the left for 200 m to reach the Canalettes forest house. Go through the gate just past the house. 100 m further on, make a short out-and-back detour to the left through the ONF (National Forestry Office) arboretum to see the lavogne (a traditional water tank). Then continue to the left; the path descends slightly. 150 m further on, follow the signs for "Abri des Canalettes" (Canalettes Shelter), pass the Mousterian shelter, and continue on a small path that climbs gently and then veers left. At the intersection with another path, turn right and continue for approximately 600 m. The path turns south and the ground becomes sandy; a rocky chaos comes into view on the right. The path is well-defined and leads to a stone arch. Pass under it and immediately turn right. Go past a large, pyramid-shaped rock, then head left to pass Le Crâne du Géant (the Giant's Skull). Continue straight ahead, leaving a cave with a built section on your right. The path climbs slightly to reach "Le sanctuaire de l'homme mort" (the Sanctuary of the Dead Man) on the left. Continue along the rocks sculpted by water and erosion to arrive at "La Grotte de la Sorcière" (the Witch's Cave). Leave the cave to your right and continue along the path. At the crossroads, turn right onto the path through the forest. Further on, the ground becomes sandy and stony, leading to the entrance of the first canole. Take the small path to the right that descends between two cairns (piles of stones erected by hikers to mark a location) to visit the canole. At the back, there is a cave with a sinkhole (bring a flashlight). Retrace your steps to the cairns and descend to the right. 50 meters further on, take the path on the right that leads to the second canole. Make the round trip. At the exit of the canole, continue straight ahead on the path through the forest. It opens onto a clearing. Cross it and then continue straight ahead through the woods to reach a second clearing. Turn left to visit the Sébillère cave. Retrace your steps and continue straight ahead on a wide path to reach the track at the cattle grid. Cross the fence and turn right to return to the starting point.

A refreshing hike along the eastern edge of the Larzac, where water—the plateau’s hidden treasure—surfaces in various forms: the Durzon spring and the dampness of the "canoles", natural, moss-covered fissures. From the car park, cross the bridge, turn right at the cross, and—70m later—continue right onto the dirt track. Leave the tufa bridge on your right and veer left. 200m further on, at the fork, keep right and continue for 800m to the spring. The path climbs above the spring (a steep ascent through woods and rocks for 500m). Then, the path winds through the woods for 1km before intersecting a wide track. Turn right and pass the Mousterian shelter. The path rises gently, then veers left. At the next junction, turn right and continue for 600m. The track heads due south, leading to a stone arch. Pass beneath it and bear right, passing by rock formations. Continue straight ahead, leaving a first cave on your right, then "Sanctuaire de l’Homme Mort" (Sanctuary of the Dead Man) on your left. Follow the path alongside water-sculpted rocks to the "Grotte de la Sorcière" ( the Witch's Cave) and leave it on your right. 50m further on, at the junction, turn right. The ground becomes sandy and stony, leading to the entrance of the first "canole" (a narrow, rocky fissure). Take the path to the right to explore it. At the far end, there is a cave with a vertical shaft (bring a flashlight). Retrace your steps and head back down to the right; 50m further on, turn right again to reach the second "canole". Walk to the end and back. Upon leaving the "canole", continue straight along the forest path, crossing a clearing and a stretch of woods before reaching a second clearing. Take a short detour to the left to see the "grotte de la Sébillère" (a cave),  then continue along a wide track until you reach the junction with the main trail (cattle grid). Turn left onto the trail. After about 700m, leave it by turning left onto a path through the woods. Pass "la grotte éclairée" (the illuminated cave) and follow the marked path until you reach the track again. Follow the track to the left as far as the Canalettes forest house. Take a short detour behind the farmhouse to see the "lavogne" (cobbled watering place) and the arboretum. Then continue along the track towards La Portalerie for 300m. Bear left onto the grassy path heading towards Pas de la Mule. After 500m, make a sharp left turn and continue descending along the track for 600m through the forest. Turn right onto a narrow path at a concrete marker post inscribed with the number 21. The path winds along before beginning the descent through the rocks. Pass through Pas de la Mule and continue downhill until you reach the path running alongside the Durzon river (point 2). Turn right to return to the starting point.

From here, optional there-and-back to the statue of the Virgin Mary. Continue towards "Rocamousse", Then "Passerelle de la Vis" and "Les Lauriers".  Then walk to “Valcroze” via “Chemin de Gleize”. From the Middle Ages to the Iron Age, a descent in time and an ascent on the causse. From the Templar and Hospitaller jewel of Ste-Eulalie de Cernon, get to the Oppidum of Puech du Mus. From the north of the car park, take left a gravelled path that climbs slightly. Pass in front of a reservoir and continue climbing. Following the yellow marks, when you arrive at a forked tree, turn right and go through the oaks and boxwoods on a steep path to reach the base of the cliffs. Cross a small barrier and continue climbing. During the ascent, let on the right the path going to “L’Assetadou” and continue straight. You arrive in a pasture, pass below a barn, walk around it to reach the television relay and the archaeological site of the Celtic Oppidum of Puech du Mus (magnificent view of the Cernon valley). Return to the barn and go east on a wide dirt road that passes near a second reservoir. Oblique left (north) to arrive in a wide track. Follow it to the left. It’s lined by forage crops and cereals and it arrives to a crossroad (GR71C), at the edge of the plateau. Turn left on the stony path that goes down to the Frayssinet farm and continue on the small road on 200 m. Following the signs, take the first dirt path on your left that goes to a small pass, then go down on a farm road to Mas de Roques. Follow on the small road that join the D77 road at the fountain of Mas de Roques. Take left the D77 to return to Sainte-Eulalie.

This house built in the end of 15th century has a superb mullion window and a turret added in the 17th century, which suggest the wealth of the owners. The Information Office of the village is located in this house, which owes its name from one of its owners (Sir Scipion Sabde’s widow,   nicknamed “La Scipione”. Inside, a superb vaulted room served as a sheepfold. It‘s possible to visit the floors and the spiral staircase leading to it also gives access to the walkway.

La Couvertoirade preserves all its walls, built in the mid-fifteenth century. As early as 1346, robbers called "routiers" plunder the Larzac. Because of fear of the armed gangs, villagers were asking in 1439 the permission to fortify the village. The construction continued until 1445 under the direction of master mason Déodat d'Alaus.This wall of 420 m long and 1.30 m of thickness is pierced by arrow slits and is surmounted by a walkway.Sources: Information Office of La Couvertoirade.

This oven owes its name to the tax people had to pay for using it: this tax was called “la banalité”. Built in the 15th century by the Hospitallers and restored in 2000s. Today, it works and batches are regularly made by the village baker.

The present church has replaced the old parish church of the 11th century, situated outside the village. This new building, partly carved into the rock in the 14th century will attend the final constitution of a village.During construction of the walls in the 15th century, the church flat chevet will be a complete portion of the wall. The Templar castle was built in the late twelfth century on the rocky outcrop of the village. Until the construction of the walls in the fifteenth century, its mission was to protect the villagers in case of attack, evidenced by its barbican, this primitive enclosure, as well as the remains of a gatehouse, located above the front door. The lavogne and the tank have a dual function, vital to the plateau. The lavogne is a pond developed on the clay funds, impervious to water. It is often paved with stones to prevent gully erosion that cause trampling of sheep flocs came to drink it. The cistern collects rainwater and stores. The first notes about windmills appear in England and France at the end of the 12th century. They were much developed in the early 13th century and stopped turning at the end of the 19th century without any exception. In La Couvertoirade, there were two windmills, one disappeared but was mentioned in the 17th century in a place called “the Cross of wind”, the other still dominates the city at Redounel. “Le Moulin de Redounel”: altitude: 808 m, outer diameter: 5.56 m, height 6.60 m, thickness of walls: 1.08 m. It is made up of one of the only remains of windmills in South Aveyron, among the 60 windmills known in Aveyron. The pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) is widespread in the areas of the south of France. Its leaves are hairy on their underside, which is an adaptation to drought (the hairs limit evaporation and retain moisture). The village of Ambouls, municipality of Nant, built on the right bank of the Dourbie River, would date from the installation of the Romans in the area of Nant.The hillock of Ambouls peak (641 m high) was fortified in the Iron Age from 700 or 600 BC., a clear sign of an older occupation.On the peak or “gallo-Roman oppidum”, pieces of pottery were discovered 40 years ago and are preserved at the Museum of Montrozier.On the east side we can still see todays the entrance of the “grotte des fées” (cave of the fairies), where Ernest André discovered in 1913 human bones dating from around 4500 BC.Ambouls is one of those agricultural hamlets, emptied by the rural exodus, but which recovers now a new soul, thanks to the city dwellers who come back and restore the houses.Some houses are typical with the external stone staircase, the porch and under the stable which opens on a wide arched porch.You can also discover an original fireplace above an old bread oven and a stone cross from 1710.

This typical Cévennes mid-mountain hamlet is perched at 600 meters altitude, at the end of the Notre Dame de la Rouvière valley, in the Cévennes National Park, classified in 2018 as an international starry sky reserve. It offers a 180° south-facing view, terraced meadows inviting you to relax, a river for swimming, and a wide variety of hiking trails. Antoine and Gabrielle have been welcoming you here for 30 years. Both mountain guides, they can advise you on your hiking projects, family reunions, artist residencies and training courses. You can enjoy the nearby river, or rent a pack donkey for a day or more, and take a guided hike. Mas Corbières is a calm, enchanting place in the heart of nature, ideal for a change of scenery, a recharge of batteries and a creative outlet.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. In the heart of the historic Cévennes, l'Amorié is nestled in one of the many folds of the Cévennes mountains. The reception is done in an authentic hamlet with an architecture preserved for more than three centuries. This exceptional location allows for numerous nature activities all year round. The buildings can accommodate 28 people: 6 rooms from 2 to 6 single beds (including 10 bunk beds), living spaces open onto large covered terraces, a dining room and a sanitary block inside. The Association Départementale des Francas du Gard was created more than 60 years ago. It is a popular education movement, an association that complements the public and secular school system. It brings together men and women who work on a daily basis to bring to life the national project "With children and young people, together for education! It develops a program of interventions in favor of associations and communities that organize leisure, educational, social or cultural activities for the inhabitants of the department. Today, it federates a network of about 60 municipalities and 25 associations. Since 2013, the Association has wanted to develop its educational project on the center "l'Amorié" and more particularly on the following themes: environmental education and sustainable development, art, culture and intercultural learning to live together. Today, the reception and environmental education center "L'Amorié" in Thoiras (30) has become the ambassador of the environmental and eco-citizenship project of the Association Départementale des Francas du Gard in the department and the Occitanie region. This comfortable, functional and friendly gîte is remarkably well suited to the needs of hikers in the new millennium. The preservation of the old buildings has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while respecting the architectural authenticity and rich history of the area. Lime rendering and the use of chestnut wood blend perfectly with the original stone. The garden offers a variety of relaxation areas for a well-deserved rest. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes. The gîte is located 1 km upstream from Saint Jean du Gard.
