A trip outside La Couvertoirade, in an agropastoral landscape: ideal for understanding the daily life of inhabitants of this fortified village at the time of Templars and Hospitallers.Through the parking, you have to get the ramparts of the village at the north gate and go through the village on the left to join the church.You can leave the village by the small door of access located between the church and the castle. Walking up and down till Moulin de Redounel, you have to take down on the way back to the left along the ramparts to lavogne.Follow the road in left approximately for 250 m and to pass beyond a disused barn. To veer right on the track that rises smoothly on the tray. After a wide turn, it turns towards south and reaches 1 km, at a fork.To leave GR de Pays to go down in right through the pasture of 100 m, then to appear on a dirt track. To follow it towards west for 900 m and reach an intersection with the GR 71.To turn right on the stony path. Being narrow, it then widens and passes through a small oak wood. You have to go through the Boussière, then in a small meadow and continue through the hollow road that leads to the foot of the wall, facing the south gate.To enter the village through the south door and to the car park via the north door.

Outside of the Templar wall of La Couvertoirade, a pleasant expedition on the southern fringe of the Larzac Aveyronnais, in an arid landscape scattered with boxwoods and junipers.After the visit of the Templar site of La Couvertoirade, exit by the North door. Follow on the right for 200 meters the small road to a cross (776m). Oblique left. At the crossroads, take the D185 on 800 meters.Turn right onto a dirt road.Before an intersection of tracks, turn left on an old path that joins a track. Turn left and join the small road to La Salvetat at a bend. Turn left and go down to the underpass. Go under the motorway and turn left on the old Roman road to a grove.Turn left, go down to the motorway fence, follow it to the left, take the underground passage, cross the D185 and take in front a path lined with low walls and boxwoods which leads back to La Couvertoirade.

Cross the village to reach the D7.Follow it on the left for 400m then take the right track for 600m before finding a single-track that goes left. Continue on this magnificent path for 1km until "Fontvive", pass in front of the building and go on for 300m.At the junction with the old railway, turn right and continue for 4km, then take the trail on the right to go back to the car park.

"Le Guilhaumard", it’s a karst plateau like no other, a Larzacian islet on the edge of the department of Hérault. Its specific geology and climate make it an eden for botanists. A real discovery!1 - From the walkers’ car park, cross the track and take in front a rocky path, then, a path that, further, goes down to the farm of les Aires. Take it on left on 200m.2- Before the farm, turn right on the trail and go down to Sorgues.The Sorgues resurgence is just before the hamlet on the left (go and back).3 – Cross the hamlet and continue on the road on 2,5km. Turn left to La Mouline, pass over the Sorgues and then continue towards Saint-Rome-de-Berlières, on 800m.4 - Turn on the left hairpin road, ford the stream and continue on the dirt track. Turn left on a path in the middle of boxwood and juniper, then follow the shaded path which climbs and arrives on the plateau at the “Pas de Tirecul”.5 – On the plateau, (you can observe in spring and in the beginning of summer a lot of orchids), turn left and walk along the edge of the plateau  walking on tracks or old “caussenard” paths to join the Mas Raynal.6 – Take the road in direction of Cabanes. Before the hamlet, turn right on the track and follow it on 500m to reach the car park.

Then it shrinks to enter the wood. The Durzon River is nearby.At the intersection, leave the small tuff bridge on the right (private property of the descendants of Victor Hugo) and turn off towards left. 200m further, at the junction, take the right path along the river and continue for 800m to reach the spring.From the source, cross the Durzon on the concrete footbridge and take, at the bottom of the meadow, the path that goes up on the right towards Mas de Pommiers. Then follow the asphalt road to the starting point.From the point 4: you can return to the starting point by the same route as on the way out.

Continue straight until joining again the road D277. Cross the road and take the path that flows in front on the left.After 300m down, take the path to the left. After the farm, continue straight towards “Espace Nature Ladoux” (Nature area), then take the right path along the stream.Then follow the road to Sainte-Eulalie, enter into the ramparts through the main gate and join the square (information center and toilet). Take the covered lane then the street on the left until the road to Lapanouse de Cernon.At the exit of the village, follow “Le Mas de Roque” on the right. After “Le Frayssinet”, continue the ascent to the plateau. Once on the heights continue straight towards La Cavalerie. (At the end of the hill, you can access to a viewpoint taking the track on the right for 1km towards the relay).At the Townhall, take right the road “Route de la Tune” towards the stadium, then at the crossroads take straight.100m after the stadium, turn right on a track to pass under the road, then the motorway. Join the pine woods towards L’Hospitalet-du-Larzac.After the downhill, take the road on the right at the crossroads.

Through the small bucolic paths of the “Garden of Aveyron”, this mountain bike loop, accessible to everyone, takes you peacefully to the Durzon spring, punctuated by the murmuring of clear water.From the parking, pass the old market and go to the square « Place St-Jacques ». Take the path called “Chemin des Vernèdes hautes”, a beautiful little path between the gardens, which follows an irrigation canal on 600m before finding on a small road (D178) towards the spring “Source du Durzon”Turn left and continue on the road for 5km before reaching the spring. This house built in the end of 15th century has a superb mullion window and a turret added in the 17th century, which suggest the wealth of the owners. The Information Office of the village is located in this house, which owes its name from one of its owners (Sir Scipion Sabde’s widow,   nicknamed “La Scipione”. Inside, a superb vaulted room served as a sheepfold. It‘s possible to visit the floors and the spiral staircase leading to it also gives access to the walkway.

La Couvertoirade preserves all its walls, built in the mid-fifteenth century. As early as 1346, robbers called "routiers" plunder the Larzac. Because of fear of the armed gangs, villagers were asking in 1439 the permission to fortify the village. The construction continued until 1445 under the direction of master mason Déodat d'Alaus.This wall of 420 m long and 1.30 m of thickness is pierced by arrow slits and is surmounted by a walkway.Sources: Information Office of La Couvertoirade.

This oven owes its name to the tax people had to pay for using it: this tax was called “la banalité”. Built in the 15th century by the Hospitallers and restored in 2000s. Today, it works and batches are regularly made by the village baker.

The present church has replaced the old parish church of the 11th century, situated outside the village. This new building, partly carved into the rock in the 14th century will attend the final constitution of a village.During construction of the walls in the 15th century, the church flat chevet will be a complete portion of the wall. The Templar castle was built in the late twelfth century on the rocky outcrop of the village. Until the construction of the walls in the fifteenth century, its mission was to protect the villagers in case of attack, evidenced by its barbican, this primitive enclosure, as well as the remains of a gatehouse, located above the front door. The lavogne and the tank have a dual function, vital to the plateau. The lavogne is a pond developed on the clay funds, impervious to water. It is often paved with stones to prevent gully erosion that cause trampling of sheep flocs came to drink it. The cistern collects rainwater and stores. The first notes about windmills appear in England and France at the end of the 12th century. They were much developed in the early 13th century and stopped turning at the end of the 19th century without any exception. In La Couvertoirade, there were two windmills, one disappeared but was mentioned in the 17th century in a place called “the Cross of wind”, the other still dominates the city at Redounel. “Le Moulin de Redounel”: altitude: 808 m, outer diameter: 5.56 m, height 6.60 m, thickness of walls: 1.08 m. It is made up of one of the only remains of windmills in South Aveyron, among the 60 windmills known in Aveyron. The pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) is widespread in the areas of the south of France. Its leaves are hairy on their underside, which is an adaptation to drought (the hairs limit evaporation and retain moisture). Located at the foot of the Larzac Causse, in the south-west of Nant, the Durzon Spring is a karstic resurgence whose supplying basin extends over 100km² between L'Hospitalet du Larzac, Le Caylar, Cazejourdes and Egalières. The Karstic system doesn't retains water on surface and constitutes big undergroung water reserves. The flow of the source varies between 0,8m3/s and 35m3/s and has an average temperature of 11,13°C. The Durzon river runs for 6km and flows into the Dourbie river at the place "La Mouline".

It offers a 180° south-facing view, terraced meadows inviting you to relax, a river for swimming, and a wide variety of hiking trails. Antoine and Gabrielle have been welcoming you here for 30 years. Both mountain guides, they can advise you on your hiking projects, family reunions, artist residencies and training courses. You can enjoy the nearby river, or rent a pack donkey for a day or more, and take a guided hike. Mas Corbières is a calm, enchanting place in the heart of nature, ideal for a change of scenery, a recharge of batteries and a creative outlet.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. In the heart of the historic Cévennes, l'Amorié is nestled in one of the many folds of the Cévennes mountains. Situated on the edge of the GR70 and very close to the GR61, 'Le Pré de Modestine' is the ideal place to enjoy the end of Stevenson's route, or to organize hikes to discover the Cévennes. The gîte is located 1 km upstream from Saint Jean du Gard.
