The waters of the Dure, loaded with shale, have the property of degreasing sheep's wool. Very early on, fulling mills were installed there: the wool was entirely processed here to be transformed into cloth. Signs: Yellow Markings Departure from the parking lot at the north exit of the village. Just after the Saint-Denis gate, take the D8 for 150m uphill. At the first fork in the road on the right, go past the farm "Bellevue". View of the Alzeau and Dure gorges and the village on its promontory. On the first part of the circuit, the paths leading to the various (private) mills follow one another. These took advantage of the driving force of the water to turn mill stones and other machines. The particular quality of the water of the Dure, which had the necessary properties for cleaning and wool degreasing, allowed the development of a textile industry. After crossing the hamlet of "Franc", cut the D8 and take the road opposite, the path heads west towards the Alzeau valley. You will enjoy the view of the Pyrenees. Arriving at the pig farm, turn left on the downhill path. 600 m further on, a fork on the right will make you join the Alzeau river by going down in the undergrowth. The river lost its mills in the 13th century when part of its water was captured to feed the Canal du Midi (gully of the Montagne Noire). Follow the river up to the bridge of "l'Isoule" dating from the 12th century: observe the two arches and the remarkable ferns on the nearby banks. Go back on the path for 100m, take the time to observe the traces of cart wheels in the stone and then turn right. Slight ascent in the shade of the vegetation then pass under a power line. At the crossroads with the track, continue straight ahead. Then quickly the markers will guide you back to the undergrowth, allowing you to discover a capitelle (dry stone hut). It is visible from a small layon on the left. When you get back to the main track, a little further on the right, a promontory with a view of the “Chateau de Villeneuve” and the gardens below. At the exit of the wood, a large open area with a breathtaking view over the Pyrenees; and back to the village of Montolieu.

An opportunity to discover an exceptionally varied flora and some of the most beautiful views on the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. Signs: Yellow markings The start of the trail is in the lower part of the village, route de Fraisse-Cabardès just at the entrance of the parking lot at the level of the signpost. Take the direction of the place called "L'Horte" along the cemetery. Go up in the direction of the Saint-Roch chapel (lectern, cross, viewpoint on the village). The path passes just below the chapel. You can reach it by a small picturesque path.  You will be able to appreciate the peaceful setting, the majestic trees and the stone benches. Come down from the chapel and continue the progression on the path to discover the capitelles (drystone huts) on both sides. The signs will guide you gently northwards in the middle of low vegetation and then gradually along the edge of the woods towards the west. When you arrive on the paved road, turn right then left at the intersection with the D148. Go down towards the village and from the first loops, before crossing a bridge, go down on the left on a very old path. It is quite steep for the first few metres, it winds through the "Combe Belle". Enjoy the beautiful section restored by a local resident. At the end of the road, you will find the D148 which brings you back to the starting point.

The territory of the marsh harrier, the wild rabbit, the red partridge... amongst the capitelles (dry stone huts), remains of the pastoralism activity, overwhelmed by the natural scents... Signs: Yellow markings From the village, take the direction of the hamlet of Caunettes Hautes. At the bottom of the Côte de Regord, on your left, a picnic area indicates the start of the loop. Once in front of the sign, take the path going to the right and crossing the pine forest. At the end of this one, the plateau covered with garrigue appears, notched by fancy streams where thyme is omnipresent. Take the small wooden bridge which spans the brook of La Combe, progress in the middle of boxwoods, kermes oaks and junipers. Then the path crosses the D48, the yellow markings take you to the track on the right allowing you to discover the vineyard. At the road, turn left towards Caunettes-Hautes. At the entrance of the hamlet, turn left again and take the track in the centre of the big open area.  As you approach the first grove, the markings will direct you to the right, inviting you to follow the steep path. Return to the main track on the right and continue to discover the Combe Obscure (name of the stream) which cuts deeply into the limestone plateau and offers a viewpoint revealing the rocky bars of the domaine Bertrandou. Further on, after crossing the D48 again, at the crossroads of the tracks, turn left for 700m/0.4mi. On a clear day, the Pyrenees block the horizon behind the Malepère massif. Arriving at a crossroads of tracks with three possibilities, turn left as you go down South. You will pass through "Garouilles", boxwood, lavender and rosemary. Once in the pine forest where a last crossroads awaits you, the signpost will tell you to go left to find the picnic area.

This route takes you on a journey of discovery of landscapes shaped by men. On limestone plateaus covered with scrubland that had to be cleared to make them suitable for cultivation, stones were used to build low walls, enclosures or dry stone huts named "capitelles".These constructions, originally built for agriculture (cereals and then vines) were used as temporary shelters by shepherds in case of bad weather. There are very few specific pastoral buildings: there are enclosures either to keep the sheep or to enclose the crops and protect them. Signs : Yellow, follow the track with the sign “pierres seches”The path climbs up to the plateau via Avenue des Capitelles, running alongside,  at times , an old draille (a passageway for herds) on the left.At the top of the housing estate, take the path to the large enclosure wall on the left (interpretation panel).On your right, the path goes through the scrubland.Follow the yellow markings, reinforced by white signs. Numerous dry stone constructions and typical vegetation (boxwood, thyme, broom, etc.).The plateau offers beautiful views over the Carcassonne plain and the Pyrenees.After arriving on a track, turn right for about 500m then left towards the trees.Carry on through the open countryside and down a winding path.Once on the track, fork right for 400m.One last time to the right in the undergrowth, take a small shady path, which is very pleasant in the summer, going back up to the arrival point.

At the bottom of a valley runs the small stream of la Valette, with an unregular and weak flow. It goes through a limestone land, due to the sea advancing 52 thousand years ago. You will encounter Aragons botanical path. On the side of the valley, limestones vary with marls used as a support for terrace culture. Except some vineyards, vegetation is mostly Mediterranean. It is characterised by the importance of long lasting leaves species, which give those green landmark even in the winter. Yellow markingsStart by going left of the permanent podium. The path starts by the crossing of a stream, then goes on following it back up. You will then need to turn right in order to cross the stream on bridge, and turn left right away and walk between the two hills. Walk along an exposed large field (used to be some vines) in order to go back up the hillside along the stream.Further , a small wooden bridge will allow you to cross it again. The path will progressively go upwards  to the Font de l’Orme plateau, in an undergrowth,  very enjoyable during summer.Turn left once then again 100 m further.                                                Go past a shelter under a rock. Carry on straight ahead, the landmark opens and allows you to admire the valley and its rocky escarpments before your sight drifts to the village built on a buttress.Once out of the undergrowth, the path goes down to the left, leave the starting points on the right. Once down, you will find the "La Valette" stream and on the right, the path leading back to the parking lot.

The diversity of Carcassonnes area landscape, between hills, plains and forests, has produced a wide variety of place names that give keys to deciphering history. The most frequent toponyms refer to geographical features, such as Laprade or Pradelles (the meadow) Lacombe (small valley), Pech Redon (round mountain). Names such as Borde Neuve (new farm), La Bouriette (small farm), Casalet (small house), La Farguette (small forge), l'Horte or hortal (the garden) reflect human activities. Other toponyms finally find their origin in nature (Vernède, Fraisse, Castans) or fauna (les Crabes, Canto Aoussel). Signs: Yellow markings Leave from the parking lot in front of the village grocery store. Reach the village centre and cross it by the main street. Turn left, rue Saint-Marc and go down to the bridge. Just after the bridge, turn right immediately onto the small service road along the brook. Join the road, go down and turn left; 50 meters further, turn right onto a small road. This road climbs gently up to the Ventaillole vineyards. Take the road on the left and go down to Deumier. At the fork in the road, turn right and go straight ahead. Go along the vineyards and reach a crossroads in the garrigue (point of connection with a hiking trail in the village of Aragon). Walk along a small path on the left, in the undergrowth, a capitella (drystone sheperds hut)  faces you on the old Raissac path. Leave the garrigue and at the crossroads, go opposite to the farm of Bourriette ("small farm", from the Occitan "borie": the farm). Just after the buildings, turn right and then left to go along the vineyards at the foot of Pech Saint-Jean (highest point of the Commune). Go down and cross a wooded coomb. Cross the bridge and turn left (ampelographic trail showing the vines and the different grape varieties). After 600m, reach a crossroads. Go down on the left through the vineyards (capitelle on the right, panorama on the village and beyond on the Cité of Carcassonne). Return to the village on the D38. Back in the centre, take some time to stroll through the narrow streets around the castle.

Follow the old path that used to link the village to the abbey of Villelongue. Signs: Yellow markings The trail follows the old path that linked the village to the abbey and starts at the top of the village near the towers and medieval garden, at the foot of the Carsac stone. Take the small paved road to the left of the sign showing the three footpaths of Saint-Martin-le-Vieil. At the fork, leave the path "sentier des Capitelles" on the left , and carry on straight ahead. At the level of the vineyards, a marker will direct you to a path separating the different plots of land. This one will lead you through the vineyards and then, in the undergrowth, on a slightly sandy earth path. After a short hour's walk (half of the circuit), we arrive on the part of the path overlooking the abbey. We can then see the abbey, majestic, in its bosky bower. A visit of the abbey and the splendid garden is a must. For those who wish, a variant will take you to an old lime kiln.To reach it, cross the small bridge over the "La Vernassonne" and just after the last building on the left, take the path that climbs gently upwards: count one-hour round trip but it is worth it ! The return trip promises to be very pleasant; to do so, take the track starting from the parking lot and go along the edge of the wood. Then at the crossroads, turn right, make a small effort before reaching the plateau. The wooded part will be very nice in summer. When you reach the paved road, continue and then take the track on the right and, a little further on, a track on your right. During the descent at 50m on your right stands a “capitelle” (dry-stone hut) with as always, the doorway to the south.  As soon as you discover it, you will recognize the village and its two towers of the feudal castle, announcing you the end of the hike.

This trail goes down from the village into the Lampy valley, discovering the river and the leisure lake. Signs: Yellow markings Pass in front of the towers and then on the panoramic terrace in front of the town hall. You have the choice between the stairs on the left or the path straight ahead, you will end up at the same point! Cross the small road, go down the stairs opposite then join the parking lot on the other side of the D4 down the village. Go in the direction of the bridge and pass over it. On the outside of the bend, a variant of about 1.2km aller-retour will give you a very nice view of the village and the Pyrenees. Taking the bend, cross the road and take a track on the edge of the woods towards the banks of the Lampy. Further on, at the level of the footbridge, it is advised to you in summer time to follow the small loop in undergrowth which is very pleasant! On the way back, cross the river by the footbridge and turn right towards the lake by going around it. Cross the D34 in order to follow a small road going up slowly. You will then alternate tarred and earthy sections to reach the heart of the village.

In Conques-sur-Orbiel about thirty volunteers meet for half a day a week to restore these capitelles (dry stone hutS) which served as shelters for the winegrowers during the bad weather. Signs: Blue markings Departure to the right of the big sign going up the track for about 200m. Take on the right a path (small trail) following the blue arrows. Gradually go into the "Occitan garriga" scrubland to discover different “capitelles”. Arrival on a track, on the right for 50m then on the left where four visual supports will inform you about the Essences of the area, the Garrigue, the Alaric mountain and the Pyrenees. Resume the progression behind you by following the markings, you will pass in front of the capitelle des Jumelles. Then two capitelles further on, you will leave on your right the departure of the Cagarot (path N°4, 2km, with beautiful panoramas) and by taking on the left you will arrive at "l'embarrade", this place was restored and fitted out in picnic area by a local association of protection of the capitelles. The path continues on the right up to a track, turn left, slightly uphill for about 250m. On your right, you can see another construction, "l'assietadou" dry stone shelter for sitting. Then the signposts will take you to the left, the progression will take place in a rather dense garrigue, very pleasant and you will end up on a new track. Turn right for 50m and then turn left (do not go over the power line). You will fall back on the track of the departure, take on the left in light descent for the return. You are facing south towards the Pyrenees: admire the panorama... Return to the parking lot.

The omnipresent scrubland reminds of the pastoral activity or abandoned vineyards. One can easily imagine a few goats, passing by on calades (slopes), greeting grape-pickers while feasting on a few branches. Signs: Yellow markings Leaving from the cemetery in rue des Pyrénées. Go up towards the plateau by a rather steep path and pass in front of the water tower. Turn right onto the “chemin des hauts du Thou” and continue until you reach a grassy path. Follow it until you reach a crossroads: turn left and then immediately right. As you walk along the Bade Plateau, the dry-stone walls that once marked out the cultivated plots of land are still visible. On a clear day, the panorama of Carcassonne and its city is revealed with the Corbières and the Pyrenees in the background. After going down the slope, take the track to the right in order to join the asphalt road linking Pennautier to Villegailhenc. Once there, notice in front of you a grey cylindrical marker indicating the passage of the “Méridienne Verte”: a project aiming to materialize the line of the meridian of Paris in France by trees. Turn right for about 250m and then right again on a slightly uphill path. Follow the yellow marks up on the plateau, you will pass in front of a small well protected by a few stakes. A little further on, you will see the panorama of the Montagne Noire and its highest point marked by the Pic de Nore (red and white antenna). The village of Villegailhenc is at your feet. At the crossroads, take the left path which is paved with large pebbles and goes down to the outskirts of the village via “rue du Thou”. Turn right on rue de la Bade and turn right one last time on rue des Pyrénées to get back to the starting point of the loop.

Located at an altitude of 680 m, in the heart of the Montagne Noire, this lake of 25 ha offers supervised swimming in July and August with sandy beaches and water games. Warning ! Canoeing is forbidden! A trail around the lake of 2.7 km, set up as a sports trail and botanical trail will be the pleasure of those who come to walk a little. This little chapel - or capelette - was built in 1947 by the monks of the Abbey of En Calcat. It is not open to visitors. The Capelette was built near the location of a former chapel that does not exist anymore but the place bears a cross as a token. The presence of a chapel on the plateau of St Ferréol probably dates back to the Middle-Ages.

On the rock of Abbade stands the giant statue of St Stapin, an emblematic monument of the village of Dourgne.

In the secret underground of the Black Moutain. The Causse Plateau is a unique archeological site in France thanks to the value, the rarity and the number of the remains discovered here. Located on the heights of Soreze, this plateau is riddled with more than 7000-meter-long of underground galleries, as the Calel cavern (caving site). Bordered to the north by the Lauragais plain and the Minervois plain to the south, the Black Mountain forms the south west extremity of Central Massif. It extends for 70 km, from east to west, over three departments (Tarn, Aude and Hérault). The Pic du Nore, which culminates at 1211 metres, offers a 360° panorama with a view of the Pyrenées and the Mediterranean Sea.

On the road to Berniquaut, you will meet the "Peiro Ficada" located on the edge of the ancient crest road. This megalith may have been used as marker or as landmark in different times. This vertical flagstone is sometimes called "La Pierre des Fusillés" because of 86 hemispherical hollows which look like bullet holes on the surface. There are many unanswered questions about this stone, espacially about the reason why people have made these hollows. It is likely that the monument was respected and honoured because they were hosting some supernatural beings.
