This is THE Cézallier. Inconsistent bumps swell the huge green carpet, sometimes peeled and yellow, sometimes spiked with coniferous trees. The lakes of La Godivelle, the meanders of the couze d'Ardes in glacial valleys... the great calm!

The start of the itinerary is marked by summer pastures. Then, we follow a pilgrimage path punctuated by an altar and calvaries. We enjoy very beautiful views of the valley carved by the streams of Roches-Charles and Sault which meet. Starting point - Go down the small road and take the first road on the left. Cross a fence (stepladder), cross a wetland and go up to the edge of the plateau. 1 - On the plateau (point of view) progress due west in the meadows. Cross two other fences (viewpoint) and reach an information panel to discover the Roches-Charles site. Go down the path and then take a wide path on the left towards the chapel, until you reach a stone altar set in a clearing. 2 - Take the right track (Way of the Cross) which goes up to the cemetery and chapel of Roche-Charles. Turn around and return to point 2 by the same path. Go up on the plateau by the right track (crossing several fences) and continue by a path slightly marked on the hillside until the edge of the plateau. 3 - On the plateau, walk along the fence (view of the Puys chain, the Sancy massif, the Cézallier mountains). Join a rural road, take it to the right and go to the road that leads back to Boslabert on the left along a wind farm.

A tour at the foot of a volcanic cone that winds its way through the pretty Vèze valley and offers views of the Gorges de la Rentières (nearby) and the Forez mountains. In the background the fortified village of Fromental watches over this territory. Starting point - From the starting sign located on a slope along the D126, take a path down below. At the first T-junction continue to the right, at the T-junction continue to the right until you reach the junction of a road on the left (thematic table on the history of Sainte-Florine). 1 - Take this path back and forth (10 min) to get down to the chapel (Sainte-Pezade chapel, basalt columns). Join the circuit and go down to the left. At the bottom of the valley, cross the Vèze stream by an old stone bridge, then climb on the opposite side (view on the basalt organs) to the hamlet of Granges. 2 - Turn right onto a small asphalt road and continue until you reach Vèze. 3 - At the crossroads, take the road on the right and cross the village (castle in ruins). Continue on the small road that leads back to Mazoires.

The high plateaus of the Cézallier massif seduce lovers of the great wild spaces with pastures, valleys, streams and peatlands. The path opens the horizon to the volcanoes of the Puys chain, the Sancy and Cantal massifs. Starting point – Below the starting sign, take the road to Le Buffier. At the farm, go down and follow the path on the left. At the crow's feet, stay on the left until you reach an intersection. Turn right (PV1- view of the Forez, Devès and Margeride mountains). The path goes around the Rocher d'Aulhat, then down to the Artoux glacial cirque (PV2). After crossing a stream, the trail reaches the bottom of the circus. At the intersection, turn right and, 30 m later, go down on the left. After the stream, go up to the road (off course, right on the road, AR 200 m, information sign). 1 - Cross it and go up on the right leaving the GR and the direction of Luguet. At the first constructions encountered, turn right into a path. Go past all the houses, go straight up. At a fork, turn right. Before a small solid shelter near the woods, turn right for about 500 metres. 2 - Leave the path to climb a step ladder on the right. Through the pastures, follow on your right the fence overlooking the circus (PV3). Cross a new step ladder and immediately turn left following the fence. After a third step ladder, go straight ahead until you reach the edge of the woods. Follow it on the left, for about 750 m (PV4: panorama on the Cantal mountains, Sancy and the Dome range). At an intersection, turn left following a fence to reach a wide road. 3 - Take it to the right, pass between the woods of Cézalier and the Croix des Champs and the Signal du Luguet. Go down and take the road on the left for 100 m. Turn right into a summer trail, follow the fence until you reach the finish line.

The tour of the peak of Cluzel takes place on a small path that rises gently, following the slopes of the oak wooded peak. Throughout this hike, the views of the valley are many and varied. Starting point - Go up the alley on the right of the church. At the first crossing, turn left and then immediately right. At the water trough, turn right and go up the path opposite. Continue the ascent on the main road to an intersection. 1 - Go down the path on the right. At the T-junction, continue the descent on the right until you reach the village of Pradelle. On the road, turn right until you reach a junction of a road on the left at the exit of the village (transformer post). 2 - Go up this path and continue until you reach a T-junction. Go down to the right (other PR on the left). At the fork, stay on the left. Continue (in the S-curve overlooking the Jonas caves and the Massif du Sancy) until you reach a stone bridge. 3 - Cross it and go down to the right. Go along the stream (ferruginous water source). At the road, turn right, cross the bridge over the Couze Pavin and immediately turn left. Go up into the woods and stay on the main path until you reach a fork. 4 - Go down to the left (old coal ovens and at the headland overlooking the peak of Brionnet, the Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel chapel and the Gourgoul gorges). Continue on the path (pailhats). At the road, turn right to reach the starting point.

A beautiful hike in the gorges of Courgoul (couze) via a pretty path that leads to an old bridge and then to Auzollette: fountain, carved stone cross, bread oven.... Courgoul is appreciated for its pailhats (terraced gardens). Starting point - From the starting sign, take the path parallel to the road (view on the "Pailhats", terraces supported by dry stone walls), cross the bridge and go up to the right. 100m further on, turn right onto a wide, steep path. At the top of the hill, ignore the left path, continue opposite and go down opposite until you reach a retrograde path located at mid-slope. 1 - Take it to the left and go up in steep bends to reach the plateau where the path continues between the meadows up to a T-junction. 2 - Turn left and continue for about 500 m (point of view on the Cézallier, the Sancy massif, the Puys chain, the Courgoul gorges, the Brionnet chapel). Ignore the left path, keep going straight down. At the next crossing, continue opposite until the intersection at the entrance to the village of Auzolette. 3 - Cross Auzolette by the main street (cross, bread oven). At the end of the hamlet, turn left and 100 m further on, turn left again. Then go down by a winding path (view of the peak and the chapel of Brionnet), leave a track on the right, continue straight down to reach the Couze valley and, taking on the left, reach the starting point.

The Couze du Valbeleix, descended from the heights of the Cézallier, has carved a magnificent valley. Man carved terraces there using dry stone walls, the "pailhats", to be able to cultivate on these steep slopes. Starting point - Take the small road on the left, opposite the loom to be fitted. Cross the bridge over the Couze du Valbeleix (view of the pailhats) and turn immediately to the left. Go along the river and join the road. Go left, cross the bridge, continue for 20 m until the junction with a path on the right. 1 - Take it and climb into the woods by a small path to reach a path, (on the right promontory with a view on the peak of Brionnet, the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel chapel and the Courgoul gorges). Go down to the left, walk along the terraces called "pailhats". At the road, turn left to reach the starting point.

From the plateau of Ussel, you can distinguish the country cut off from the couzes and the Dore mountains and then the beautiful village of Malnon. The visit of the Cistercian abbey of Mégemont founded in 1206 (nearby) is not to be missed under any circumstances. A beautiful journey. Starting point - From the starting sign, reach the cemetery, turn left on the D23 until you reach the village of Pouchenirgue. 1 - After the washhouse, turn right and continue straight ahead on this asphalt road until you reach the road. Go left, then leave it by the first path on the right. After the big bend to the right, go down ignoring the two paths to the left, (view on the Sancy massif, the peak of Brionnet with the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel chapel and the puy de Dôme) until the crossing. 2 - Take the wide track on the right to go up on the Ussel plateau. At the T-junction, turn right, go to the road and turn left. Leave it for the first road on the left and go up to the crossing. Turn right and go down (view of the Monts du Livradois and Forez) until you reach a T-junction. Turn right to go down to the D23. Follow it on the left, then take the small road to Chassagne on the right. Go through the village (church and house with side gables and redents) to reach the starting point.

Overhanging 927 m from Saurier and Courgoul, the volcanic peak of Brionnet offers hikers a panoramic view of the couzes and massifs with an orientation table and an access to a romanesque chapel built on basalt organs. Starting point - From the starting sign located in front of the Town Hall, go up the main street to the Place de la Porte Neuve (gate of the old fortified town). Turn left on the D146 towards Brionnet. At the exit of Saurier, in the bend, go up the path to the right until the road. 1 - Cross it and continue on the road opposite until you reach the hamlet of Rozier. 2 - Turn left, cross the hamlet (view of the Couze Pavin valley, the village of Creste and its ruined castle). After 800 m, take the first road on the right until you reach a paved road that leads to the road. 3 - Go up this road, then in the village of Brionnet take the first asphalt road on the right. At the top of the hamlet turn right into the sunken path and go to the road. Cross this road and take the courier that joins this same road. Continue to climb up to the pass. 4 - Turn right and follow the path then the trail to the top of the Pic du Brionnet (Notre-Dame du Mont Carmel chapel built on basalt columns, 360° panorama orientation table). 5 - Return to the pass (point 4), go down the hollow path to the right. Walk past the Lagouzoux farm (view of the Sancy massif). Continue up to the road (hairpin bend). 6 - Go down this one for 80 m. Take the first track on the left below and then turn left again 80 m further on. Join the road and go down the path on the left to continue the itinerary of the outward journey in the opposite direction until the starting point.

This city is composed of two very different lakes. The lake situated at the bottom of the village has a glacier origin, and dates back to 10 000 years. Before wide of 50 ha, it’s only 15 today. The vegetation colonized the lake, forming a peat land after several thousand years. In 1975, this pond and its sides were classified Natural Reserve under the name of Sagnes, to protect the exceptional biodiversity of the peat land. The lake situated in the upper village is a volcanic lake. This lake has a crater old of 113 000 years, and it is 44m deep. It covers a circular area of 14 ha, whose sides in gravels are void of vegetation. Its cold and transparent waters are poor in nutritive elements: it’s one of the most oligotrophic lakes in Europe. It’s also the water reserve of the village.

Courgoul is located in a valley hollow by the Couze of Valbeleix. This Couze has its origins near the Chaumoune pass at 1300m high, and it is the principal tributary of the Couze Pavin. This village is known for its plots of culture fitted out with little walls in rocks, called “pailhat” in Auvergne. Human beings have known how to control the craggy slopes of this valley to cultivate them by shaping them into terraces of rocks, also called “giant’s stairs”. In Auvergne, we use the word “pailhat” to define these plots fitted out with rock terraces and consolidated with little walls in rocks. You can discover this tradition through the walk called “Entre saules, chênes et pailhats” (“Between willows, oaks and pailhats”, edited by the departmental council and the Balirando association).

At the extreme south of the Puy-de-Dôme, the Luguet signal is the highest point of the Cézallier mountains (1551 metres). It offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Cantal, the Sancy massif and the Livradois mountains. The "Signal du Luguet" is the highest peak of the mounts of Cézallier at 1551m. It corresponds to old lava lakes formed 5 million years ago. The erosion erased the reliefs that overlooked them and the rock found itself in a culminating position. Below, at the east, you can see the crater of Artout. It’s one of the most beautiful glacier valleys of the Massif Central. 20 000 years ago, the snow mopped up by the winds coming from the west accrues at the east. It formed a glacier owing to the weak exposition to sun. We still can find moraines on the slopes. From the hamlet of Parrot, it is possible to go around the "Signal du Luguet". It is a 7,2km hike offering a round trip to the top of the highest peak of the Cézallier, count 2H30 to do the tour. In winter, this hike is also possible with snowshoes.

Go back to Vodable and follow the direction of Tourzel-Ronzières by the road D124 and then the direction of the place called “Le Malnon” (road D23). The Cistercian abbey of Mégemont (Historical Monument in 1954) was created in 1206 by Dauphin, count of Auvergne, for nuns. Around 1575, the Huguenots of the captain Merle destroyed some buildings and burned the archives. In 1612, the young abbess Françoise de Nérestang left Mégemont to swap places with her brother Claude, abbot of the Cistercian abbey of La Bénisson-Dieu in the Loire area. From then on, the clergymen were in charge of Mégemont. In 1743, the building was reconstructed. In the Revolution, the abbey was sold as national property and became an agricultural building, until the municipality bought it back, in partnership with the Association “Les Amis de l’Abbaye de Mégemont” created in 1992. Thanks to the numerous restoration works, you can still see the transept and the choir of the abbey-church from the 13th century and the eastern part of the conventual buildings from the 18th century, the ruins of the nave and a part of the surrounding wall.

Isolated in a secluded valley and saved from the ruin, the choir and the transept of the abbey testify from what was one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in the region. The Cistercian abbey of Mègemont was founded in 1206 by Dauphin, Count of Auvergne, for nuns. She joined the Cistercian abbey of Montpeyroux. In 1612, the abbesses left Mègemont to switch with the Cistercian abbey of La Bénisson-Dieu in the Loire. From then on, it was religious men who occupied Mègemont. During the Revolution (1793) the abbey was sold as a national property and became a farm building (sheepfold and hay barn). It will remain so until the purchase of its church by the municipality of Chassagne in 1992. Are visible: the transept and choir of the 13th century church, the wing of the 18th century monastery buildings, the ruins of the nave and part of the surrounding wall. This village was fortified in the Middle Ages and was part of the Dauphiné of Auvergne. It was for a long time isolated because of the lack of roads and because of the important flooding risks. But, in the 19th century, the opening of the road from Issoire to Condat (Cantal) opened up this territory. Overlooking the village, the Pic of Brionnet peaks at 927m, it’s part of the most beautiful points of view on the territory. This volcanic peak, surrounded by beautiful basalt columns, offers an exceptional panorama. Moreover, a little chapel, Notre-Dame of Mount Carmel, rises on its top. The village of Saurier is located along the Couze Pavin. Its mineral springs are accessible along this Couze, by a delineated path fitted out by the Protective association of the Areas of Auvergne. They are full of iron and limestone. When coming up, white and red sediments are created, and create themselves travertines, surrounded by protected halophile plants. Officially, these springs have never been used, what did not avoid a small underground production on the surroundings markets. The cavities have been used as cellar. Today, they are used as refuge for bats.

The village of Saurier, along the Couze Pavin, developed in a small basin at Courgoul gorges'exit, where the Couze of Valbeleix and the Couze Pavin flowwing together. It is dominated by the impressive mass of the rock of Brionnet, at which summit you discover a gripping panorama on all the surroundings massifs. owing to numerous faults in the gneissic platforme, many mineral springs, known as salt and heavy with iron, gush around Saurier, particularly along the Couze pavin. Saurier is distinguished by the presence of a medieval house whose function has been identified by the symbols of wolfcraft engraved on the tympanum of the front door: wolf, hare, fleur de lys, horse. It was undoubtedly the residence of a lieutenant wolfsmith, charged by the king with controlling wildlife, organizing wolf drives and the passage of mail on horseback. The 15th century bridge evokes an old route of the road leading from the Val d'Allier to the mountains. Its three arches are supported by as many beak-shaped piles, one of which carries a small protective oratory dedicated to the Virgin. It is necessary to take it and go up a path along the bank of the river. In about ten minutes, we reach the site of the salt springs.

The salt springs of Saurier, rich in iron, were born in the heart of the Pays des Couzes. Mineral water runs underground through faults and emerges at the surface, leaving behind its white and red deposits that contrast with the surrounding green environment. Halophyte plants, usually found by the sea, have developed around small springs. Starting from a superb medieval bridge called "Roman", take a cool and shaded path along one of the most beautiful rivers in Auvergne: the Couze Pavin. You will discover under your feet the passage of some small gaseous springs, forming in places very coloured limestone crusts called travertines.

Perched on a basalt peak above the valley of Couty, you will enjoy a beautiful panorama. The church dates back to the 12th century, reworked especially in the 15th century. We still can see the vestiges of the fortified priory. Inside, we can find a Christ made of ivory. Inside, the sculptures of the capitals, dated from the 13th century, reveal a transition between Romanesque and Gothic art with naturalistic representations specific to Gothic art and faces or masks preserving the fantastic character dear to the Romanesque style (grimaces, little realism). There is also an ivory Christ.
