Along the spectacular valley of the Meuse, the greenway path Trans' Ardennes offers an easy route of 120 km between Sedan, Charleville-Mezieres and Givet, where it connects to the Belgian Ravel. 

Given its position at the crossroads of the Germanic and Latin parts of Europe, the Ardennes region is strewn with evidence of its tumultuous and violent past. The powerful fortresses which tower over the landscape from high rocky outcrops have given rise to myths and legends. Their thick walls bear witness to a thousand years of sieges, wars and pillage. Bouillon, Herbeumont, Sedan and Montcornet still echo to the clash of swords and the songs of minstrels. In the light-filled valley of the Meuse, wealthy cities developed, but their riches had to be defended. The Fortifications Trail takes you along these mediaeval commercial roads, where the fate of Europe was decided on countless occasions.

From the valley of the Meuse to Préardennaises peaks, this route is a concentrate of the Ardennes. Starting from Sedan, you will pass by and enjoy Charleville-Mezieres and its surroundings, then down to the Crets sPréardennaises (vast territory with more than 90 municipalities ...) and go up to Sedan. You can follow pretty country lanes and some secondary roads which will allow you to make stops to enjoy the architectural heritage of towns and villages or simply the natural surroundings: castle, old coaching inn of the 17th century, former blast furnace or charming flowered village, point of view ...

Allow two days for this route, used for centuries to travel between Sedan castle and Bouillon castle in Belgium. A walk where water, the forest and nature are omnipresent. Although neighbours, these two regions belong to very separate lands. One nestles in a fold of the Ardennes massif, while the other stretches along the banks of the Meuse river, near the first slope of the Parisian basin. The two towns have been sisters for a thousand years, linked by history since the signing of the Treaty of Verdun in 843 dividing up the Carolingian Empire. Along this circuit you can explore Europe’s largest feudal castle in Sedan, experience Godfrey’s first crusade at the castle and archeoscope in Bouillon and take part in medieval festivals… all in an outstanding forest setting. Crossing the land of the Ardenne means encountering contrasting landscapes steeped in legends. The most secret valleys, the deepest forests and the wildest rivers have given rise to legends, some of which are told and experienced with the current of the water. In the Meuse valley, as the river twists and turns, revel in the surprise of amazing landscapes, monuments nestling in green settings and soothing calm. Exploring the Ardenne with the current, following the pace set by the river, ensures a change of scenery and a sense of wonder.

For those who love walking or cycling, the Green Routes in France and the RAVeL in Belgium open the doors to the most secret corners of both countries. As you cycle along the banks of the Meuse or hike through the secret Oignies Forest, you will understand why these long-distance paths are known as “happy trails”. They only rarely cross roads, so you can cycle or walk in complete peace! The path along the beautiful Meuse valley crosses the river several times on ancient bridges that are works of art. The path that leads to Nismes Forest follows the route taken by the old stopping trains from station to station. But above all, these paths allow you to discover countryside that is inaccessible by car.

On mainly paved forest roads, this walk crosses the southernmost part of the municipality of Vresse sur Semois. Discover the village of Pussemange located on the border with France and an impressive view from the watchtower of the vast forests in this remote corner.

In an immense clearing between Stonne and Tannay and at the foot of Mount Boson are the remains of a monastic settlement that was one of the most beautiful and striking in all of Europe. The monastery was founded in the 12th Century and its estate (ponds, land, woods, farms, etc.) extended across around forty surronding villages.

Here, at the heart of a lost valley, stand a few scattered buildings: this is all that remains of the Carthusian monastery of Mont-Dieu, once one of the largest monastic centres of western Europe. In 1084, Bruno of Cologne, in search of a life of solitude, austerity and prayer, withdrew to the heart of the alpine massif, to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, a virgin, isolated area. With his six companions, he founded a ‘wilderness’ here. The Order soon spread throughout France: the first prior of the ‘Grande Chartreuse’ came to the Ardennes and in Mont Dieu he found the ideal spot to live according to the rules of the Carthusians, observing total silence and living as hermits in small houses. The rows of shrubs that now adorn the site bear witness to the 180 arcades that led these solitary monks, three times a day, from their cell to the church.

The church of Saint-Martin was rebuilt afterthe fighting of May 1940. Its fortified porch tower houses an elegantflamboyant gate. Inside the church, one of the stones is dated 977 and isconsidered one of the oldest in the Ardennes department. Visits to the church are only possible onrequest at the town hall.

The castle ruins, dating from the 16th century, no longer reflect the lavish property of Louis de Gonzague, father of the founder of Charleville, Charles. At the height of its glory, the vast French-style garden extended towards the canal. The estate was laid waste during the Second World War. Alongside it, the Convent of the Cordeliers, founded by the same owners, still stands today. A sound and light show takes place at the end of the week in summer among the magnificent castle ruins.

It is one of the jewels of the Argonne! This 120-hectare lake, nestled in a green valley, consists of an old pond and its reed bed, which constitute a nature reserve, and a water reservoir suitable for water sports activities. THE BEACH Composed of sand, it is next to several playgrounds, shaded picnic tables and barbecues. Swimming is supervised from mid-June to the end of August. THE LEISURE CENTRETry rowing, take a canoe trip, relax on a pedal boat... Many activities are available through introductory sessions or equipment rental. For individuals and groups, the leisure centre also offers inflatable structures and activities such as archery or mini-kart, with qualified instructors. Sports and cultural stays are offered in July-August (3 to 10 days with accommodation in tents). Open on weekends from May 8, and every day from July 6 to August 30. SAILINGThe Bairon Nautic Club offers individual or group lessons all year round. In July and August, thematic courses "sports, nature and discovery" are offered from the age of 6. THE OLD POND DISCOVERY TRAIL The area is also home to frogs, fish, bats, dragonflies, butterflies and remarkable snakes. Starting from the intermediate dike that separates lake and pond, this 4.5 km (easy) hiking route will take you to Louvergny, whose small heritage is worth a detour and where the water stream of Bairon feeds several bodies of water. Around Lake Bairon is also a campsite on the lake, a restaurant, cottages, a sports hall...

One of the most beautiful views of the Ardennes culminating at 338 metres. Ancient Gallo-Roman burial mound on the Roman road from Reims - Trier. This natural hill was enhanced and transformed into an observation post in the second century. From the summit, accessible via a stairway, the view of the vast forest of Argonne is breathtaking. As the stage of tank battle between the French and Germans in May 1940, the site was captured and recaptured 17 times in 4 days. The village was completely destroyed.

Located on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur was partially destroyed during the bombings of May 1940. The nave and choir were rebuilt in the 15th and 16th century ogival style.

The village school's single classroom closed in 1989 and 20 years later, in May 2009, the 1950s School Museum was inaugurated. Located in a part of the original classroom, it can accommodate about ten people at a time.  All the devices are in working order (wireless telephone, record player, alcohol duplicator, slide and film tape projector...) and allow concrete demonstrations. The museum is open all year round by appointment only.
