Explore Revin, Ardennes, in the Heart of Champagne-Ardenne

You join the Chevauchée route in the Pays des Lacs region starting from the French border in Brûly. After a few metres, you are immersed in the Ardennes forest, which is the true green lung of the Walloon region, and the heart of an ecosystem inhabited by various wild species and an incredible biodiversity. After this gentle forest stretch lasting around eight kilometres, you reach the refreshing village of Oignies-en-Thiérache, which is known for its slate quarries and pretty stone houses. Did you know that this town was the geographical centre of the European Union until its expansion in 2004? Once you pass through, you are immersed in the lush forest once more.  

Oignies-en-Thiérache – a typical village of the region sits in a beautiful clearing of deep forests in the foothills of the Ardenne. This walk begins at the edge of the woods and follows the steep little-known paths of the ‘Viroin-Hermeton’ Natural Park. This hike, takes you to a full on immersion, off the beaten track forest route. Firstly, on the ‘Oignies-en-Thiérache’ heights, a village in the slate quarries, where you’ll see the village of ‘Le Mesnil’ and its church between the pines. The place called ‘Risque tout’ is the tipping point towards the Meuse Valley which flows into France. The ridge trail offers epic views over the valley and the French villages. You’ll then come across border markers in this area, as you walk along the French border. Characterized by slate, the steep region imposes significant differences in height. As you make your way down towards the deep valley of the ‘Ry d´Alise’ you’ll enjoy the breathtaking panorama over the Ardennes valleys.

To travel through the Ardennes is to journey through a landscape that has given rise to many legends. Its secret valleys, its deep forests and its fast-flowing rivers have created legends which have been passed down verbally from generation to generation and which come to life again when you actually walk along the pathways where they were created. In the Semois valley, wisps of mist dance around you, evoking the fairies flying around the village of Les Hayons, near Bouillon. In the Lesse valley, paths lead to a natural paradise that is jealously guarded by the Nutons. In the huge Ardennes Forest, you can hear the echo of the hooves of Bayard the horse as he carries away the four sons of Aymon fleeing Charlemagne, in a timeless, endless fantasy ride. The Legends Trail follows the gentle curves of the hillsides and rivers of this enchanting landscape which comes to life and tells its tales as you move through it.

Tortueuse et paisible, la Semoy se dévoile au gré de la voie verte. This 3 meter-large greenway was partly set up on an ancient railroad and is currently being improved. Many sections will be tarred.

On 7 June 1995, the geographical centre of the EU 15 was in Viroinval. It is located in the place named ‘du Trou du Diable’ (the Devil’s hole) which is an old slate quarry where a glass cathedral was built. A choice of two hikes will take you there. A long 15-km route or the variant that reduces the trail to 9 km. The circuit goes through the woods to a boundary ridge that dominates the French Meuse with its panorama over the river and the towns of Fumay and Haybes.  Old slate quarries, which was a flourishing industry until the dawn of the First World War, lie along the route. At the place named ‘Risque-Tout’ (Risk-it-All), you can reduce the hike to 9 km by taking the variant proposed to the right (green cross). 

From the Ruisseau de Nouée valley near Oignies-en-Thiérache, you enter through the woods near Ry de Rome. Feel free to get lost in your imagination in the peace of this large stretch of forest, before descending towards Couvin. You will follow the bed of the Eau Noire river from the ridge to the valley. This magnificent river is surrounded by hay meadows, isolated farms and deep forests. Despite its name, the Eau Noire river is famous for the clarity of its water, which comes directly from the woods. You continue west through the mountain massifs that overlook the Eau Noire river and reach Forges by crossing the Ermitage stream, after bypassing the village of Presgaux. You will pass near Scourmont Abbey, where the famous Trappist Chimay beer is brewed.   

Upon departing from the church in Le Mesnil, a small village that is typical of the municipality of Viroinval, the itinerary follows Rue de Montigny, which descends between large meadows to reach the Ardennes forest. As an aside, Le Mesnil is the least populous and most picturesque village in Viroinval. The itinerary runs along the ‘Deluve’ stream and then crosses it to reach a very pretty trail along the border between Belgium and France, arriving at ‘La Folie’. This place recalls the audacity of the people who entered the forest to forge a sliver of light and vibrancy. You will return to the village via a charming stone path through the forest.

Le Mesnil is the least populated, and doubtless the most picturesque village in the whole of Viroinval. However, 90 years ago, there were 500 inhabitants and no less than 19 cafés, some of which were illegal. Le Mesnil keeps a precious record of its past. The short walk enables you to go along paths through the unfenced meadows leading you to the top of the hill where there is view over the Meuse valley and its Ardennes forests. The Deluve stream brings a refreshing touch at the end of the route, just before the climb back up to the village.

This charming walk for families allows you to appreciate the rich biodiversity of the site, which is highlighted by the presence of alders, birches, heather and pink heather. With a little luck and patience, you may also notice great crested grebes, kingfishers, ospreys, black woodpeckers, black storks, deer, wild boar, brown trout and more along the way. The Ry de Rome dam is home to an impressive array of flora and fauna, with pretty viewpoints and bucolic little streams. Some benches and picnic tables dot the route.

The chapel was built in two stages: first of all the far room, then the two rooms on each side. With the timber of a demolished firm was built the main part of the chapel where the masses take place today. The Faure family donated the chapel  to the diocese for the "symbolic franc". Free visit.

The roof and bell-tower were destroyed in the fire that destroyed almost entirely the whole convent, in the night of 10 May 1886. The works of art that adorn the interior are fortunately intact. During the restoration, the tower surmounting the facade was replaced by a bell tower, up to the choir, to the right of the building.  One of the most famous monks was the revinois Charles René Billuard. we can admire the statue of this monk inside the church. The church is a listed buiding (October 18th, 1926)(Register of the listed buildings) Inside: Listed pulpit in September 30th, 1911 - Two listed confessionals in July 31th, 1970.

This landscape is worth. It is accessible by: - On foot: for hikers you have to borrowed the George Sand track (8 km) to reach this point of view. It takes about 1 to 1:30. or - By road: halfway between Rocroi-Fumay (D 8051) at the "place de l'Argentine' .  It takes about 30/45 minutes. The lucky ones will also attend the launch of paragliders.

In 1962, the company is absorbed by Faure Arthur Martin, who will transfer the park to the city of Revin in 1972. The park is named after the mayor who was behind this acquisition. Note the unusual presence in the park of a "Ginkgo Biloba". This tree, also known as the maidenhair tree, is among the oldest and most beautiful trees in France.  150-year-old-tree, the anonymous gardener who planted it, can not enjoy the spectacular beauty of this tree each fall. On 13th June 1944, when the Second World War was entering its final phase, 106 Manises Resistance Fighters, mostly young civilians from Revin and the surrounding area who refused to do forced labour in Germany during the Second World War, were massacred by the SS on the hills of "Le Malgré Tout", at a place called "Le Père des Chênes". Every year on 13th June, local people and personalities gather around the Resistance Fighters Roadside Cross in the clearing of "Le Père des Chênes" for a memorial service, then take the path to Revin, stopping off for the laying of a spray of flowers at the foot of the Manises Resistance Fighters Memorial on the slopes of "Le Malgré-Tout" Free visit

The house is on 3 levels with an outside space offering also a garden furniture allowing you to relax. The first floor is a large living room organized around its rotating wood stove. On one side, the living room, combining modern and antique furniture, will fulfill its comfort function with its electric sofa and its numerous armchairs allowing you to enjoy the reading corner (many books as well as historical books on the Ardennes) or the large 4K screen. From the living room, you can also relax to the rhythm of the Meuse river with a direct view on the river or by listening to 33 rpm on the vinyl player. On the other side, a fully equipped kitchen with a large family table and stainless steel chairs. An arcade terminal is at your disposal for the pleasure of retro video games. A laundry room with toilets adjoins the kitchen. From the kitchen, you have access to an interior courtyard with its dining area, Weber barbecue or ceramic barbecue at your disposal, its relaxation area and its zen space in the middle of palm trees and its hundred-year-old olive tree. The courtyard is not overlooked and benefits from sunshine all day long. On the first floor, the two bedrooms, one overlooking the Meuse River and the other overlooking the inner courtyard, have their own theme. Each room has a queen-size bed with mattress, pillows and comforter from Emma, a dedicated work space with Wi-Fi and a full bathroom (shower and toilet). On the 2nd floor, the room is composed of antique furniture in the Empire style and offers the same comfort as the other rooms. It is very easy to park in front of the house for free.
