Cognelée: the construction of the forts The simultaneous construction of the 21 Meuse forts, twelve at Liège and nine at Namur, was carried out in the space of three years, from 1888 to 1891. This required the laying of almost 100km of narrow-gauge railway line, the digging and levelling of 4 million cubic metres of land, as well as the manufacturing and casting of more than a million cubic metres of concrete. It was a time when the steam engine supplied all the energy that didn't come from manpower. It was omnipresent on the work sites. The proximity of Cognelée station (Namur – Tirlemeont line), would allow the supply of cement to Cognelée, Emines and Marchovelette forts. The "concrete" used for the construction of the forts was composed of a mixture of gravel, sand and "Portland" cement. "Portland" was made from a plentiful by-product of the rapidly expanding steel industry: slag from the blast furnace. This process, which was gradually adopted, began to be manufactured in France from 1840, in Germany in 1855 and in the United States in 1871. Note that at the time continuous casting was unheard of, which caused cracks in the concrete owing to different degrees of drying. Furthermore, creating uniform layers using steel reinforcement to limit the bending of the concrete had not yet been thought of.

Fernelmont castle-farm is a large quadrilateral surrounded by an imposing moat. The only remaining original mediaeval building is the imposing porch dungeon, built around 1300. This is a massive limestone structure with a central arched entrance between two hemispherical projecting parts. Its internal layout shows that it was well equipped with latrines, niches, basins set into the walls, window-seats, two fireplaces and, in particular, an interesting floor covered in small varnished terracotta tiles. The rest of the château is of brick and is from the 16th century, except the Tuscan gallery, which was built in 1621. Since 1986, it has been given new life by a non-profit organisation. Listed as an exceptional heritage site in Wallonia, its porch is a remarkable example of a late 13th century residential tower. From the 16th century onwards, a brick quadrilateral was developed, embellished in the 17th century with a gallery of Tuscan inspiration.The castle surrounded by water, the 17th century outbuildings and the surrounding woods form a beautiful ensemble.

Trieux des Mines: a street name as a reminder of the past A monument, memorial stone or street name is a social and historical document that provides primary information about a personality or an event, about their past, that of their municipality and of their region. It reflects the opinions and values defended by a society, a group, a municipality, a country in a certain era. It fulfils a desire to pass on and commemorate. Furthermore, it provides a useful aid to any person who wishes to understand history starting from a concrete piece of reality, on the subject of which they will ponder and formulate hypotheses... It is not unusual, during a walk around Namur, to find a street sign bearing the inscription "Military Way" or the name "Fort ... Street". These roads are found on the land acquired or expropriated by Belgian National Defence during the construction of the forts and served no other purpose than to facilitate the links between the structures. All these names (Fort Cognelée Street, Military Way, Trieux des Mines Street) therefore have a direct link with the presence of the nearby forts.

This former farmhouse dates from the 19th century and was completely renovated in 1992.The house and the few other houses were home to the people who worked at Château Bayard in the previous century. They were maids, gardeners and foresters. In the countryside, you can discover beautiful square farms and magnificent castles.On a short walk, stop at the farm and restaurant in Upignac. The Ravel network is well maintained and allows you to cycle from Eghezée to Namur or Jodoigne.
