This itinerary, a fragment of the GR 223 called Tour du Cotentin, is a portion of the European long-distance hiking trail that runs from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.

Stage of the Vélomaritime From Le Vast, follow the river Saire and then reach Montfarville for a second part of the stage along the coast. Before reaching Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and its famous fort, make a detour to the Pointe de Saire for a magnificent view of the Tatihou Island.

At 50 m, the entrance of the park of the castle of La Germonière. It is the former spinning mills park, refurbished at the end of the 19th century with its bicentenary beech trees and its castle famous for its waterfalls. 3- The wooden toy factory was created by Pierre Verseau in 2001. He declares: "Perfume and texture brought me back to wood after a 42-year detour in the metal industry". To be discovered at the Piletterie, following the sign. 4- Hameau Jean and hamlet Ricard: small typical granite houses, many of which were in ruins, are now restored. 5- Welcome stop at the bakeries of Le Vast for the famous butter brioche. You will discover an exceptional panorama Two Vauban towers, La Hougue and Tatihou, in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. Saint-Vigor de Quettehou church: a characteristic example of 13th century architecture. Look at the many 300-year-old graffiti on the aisle representing boats from the Battle of La Hougue. Panorama of the Pernelle: at the foot of the Sainte Pétronille church (11th century), discover the magnificent panorama of the Baie des Veys in the south at the Gatteville lighthouse in the north. For 19 km, you’ll walk along tracks, with views of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in the distance, your destination for this stage. Just a few hundred metres from the fort, walk past the pretty Cap Lévi harbour, protected by the bay of the same name. For a long time, the Romans used this harbour as a place of transit to England. It now shelters small fishing and sailing boats. Carry on along the coast towards Anse du Brick. This fine sandy beach, at the foot of the cliffs, is a top spot for surfing and other watersports. Leaving the l’Anse de Brick behind you, take the footbridge over the D116 and head up the road to the viewpoint. The path gradually heads away from the coast to climb up for some fantastic views of the harbour in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the biggest artificial harbour in the world. (An alternative route is possible if you want to continue along the coast. Take the pedestrian right-of-way, marked by a yellow circle). In the hamlet Douet Picot, turn right to continue on the main GR route or take the GR®223A, a variant that crosses the southern part of the town, known as the “Balcons de Cherbourg”. You’ll get back to the coast at Port du Becquet. Nestled between two rocky outcrops, the port was built in 1783. It was the main place of embarkation for shipping stones from the nearby quarries to be used in the construction of the great jetty in Cherbourg harbour. Finally, walk along Collignon beach, the maritime boulevard and the port area, before arriving at the former transatlantic liner terminal, which now houses the Cité de la Mer, the destination of this stage. Take the opportunity to explore the town of Cherbourg and its best spots.

Hike to the rhythm of the small coastal river that used to drive the mills of this gentle valley. Cape Levi, will surprise you with the beauty of its landscapes and its panoramas over Cherbourg. A total change of scenery.

A forest envelops the folds of Fermanville, covering their thin soils with a coat of leaves, branches and seeds. The paths are engraved in the relief: the Crève-Coeur, Curé and Houvetteries hunts. Often peasants and hunters, they become buildings when they are lined with solid granite blocks piled up. Trees greet us with their lighted trognes under their wind-combed hair. We cross the streams and guess, in the forest, the lines of walls that drew the contours of the green meadows described by the poet Marie Ravenel. The roots of a beech tree slide along the cornerstone of the wall of a now buried field and its multiple branches seek the light. It is a rock-eating tree that explores the sky and the earth. Composed mainly of dirt roads, this route, with its tormented relief, is particularly physical. The Gîte du Petit Maine is located in a quiet housing estate in the market town of Pontmain, close to the basilica and shops. The ground floor comprises a fully-equipped kitchen (oven, fridge, dishwasher, gas hob, toaster, kettle and microwave), a dining room with wood-burning stove and a sitting area. Bathroom with bath and shower and separate toilet. One bedroom with a double bed and another bedroom with two single beds, both on the ground floor. Outside, a south-facing enclosed garden. The oldest vestiges date back to the 14th century. A dungeon and two watchtowers. Originally built by the Courcy family, the castle was destroyed in the middle of the 16th century by the Pirou, who built the current castle. The front buildings seen on entering the castle were built in 1641 by the Jallot de Beaumont family. A postern defends the entrance to the castle, which is surrounded by a moat filled with water.

Small stone house located in Saussemesnil in the middle of the Normandy bocage, which has an independent entrance. 10 minutes north of Valognes, 20 minutes from the port of Cherbourg, and 20 minutes from the beaches and port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, the place is ideal to discover the Cotentin peninsula. The first floor includes a living room with a kitchenette (gas stove, sink, microwave and fridge, plus a set of kitchen utensils and cutlery), a large open fireplace, a bathroom with shower (80x80 so quite narrow) and toilet. A BZ sofa, a table and 4 chairs are also available. On the first floor there is a spacious and bright bedroom with two double beds and a closet and desk.

The nearest beach is less than 15 minutes away by car (Plage de Collignon). The gîte is adjacent to our house, with its own entrance and shared courtyard.
