This trail will take you to discover Lake Chambly and Val. A preserved environment that makes it a place to relax, even if swimming is prohibited. Then you will go back on the plateau or succeed the meadows.

A succession of ascents and descents, paths, trails and little roads to reach the Morillon cliffs, the Langouette gorges and the belvedere of Les Prés Grillet. From CHAUX-DES-CROTENAY, head down the tarmac road (red MTB waymarking no. 69) towards Le Gros Tilleul. Turn right to reach La Fontaine Neuve and La Chaux Church. Branch off to the left on the tarmac road towards La Loye. Take the stony path that enters the forest to your right, towards La Côte Coulon and the Morillon cliffs in LE CERNOIS.Continue on the stony path that soon turns to tarmac and that runs along the cliffs and heads up to Le Rachet. Take the tarmac road to your right through the open combe of Entre-deux-Monts to reach the hamlet of Les Merets. Turn onto the road to your right and quickly turn left to take the stony path down towards the forest and up to the Étang des Drillettes (Drillettes lake). Continue on the muddy path that heads right up to Les Drillettes, and then take the long forest road along the Quenot rivulet to the road in Sous Grateloup. Carefully cross the départemental road and take the road opposite you that will lead you to the LAVOIR (washhouse) - LES PLANCHES-EN-MONTAGNE via La Fontenette and Le Girod. Continue on the main village road towards Bas du Village. Head down the road to your left and cross a bridge over the La Langouette gorges. Continue on the road, past LE MARTINET and reach Montliboz. Branch off to the right on a stony path that then heads up into the forest, towards Derrière la Montagne Ronde (“behind the round mountain”). Take the muddy path that follows along the right of the D 16 until you reach Chez Tatet, and then take the tarmac road down to La Feuillée au Loup. Turn left onto a small forest path towards La Voie Sacrée. Follow the white path to your right for 200 metres, and then turn left into an area with railings and a building. Follow a long and narrow trail through the forest. Exit onto a tarmac road, turn left and follow the trail to LES PRÉS GRILLETS. After the short out-and-back to the belvedere of Les Prés Grillets, continue on the tarmac road towards La Grande Cheminée. Descend to your left on the stony forest path and take the winding trail to your right to reach Les Messageries. Turn left on the tarmac road and reach the hamlet of Cornu. Continue left onto the road to the hamlet and then turn right just before the last farm. Head up the stony path through the pastures to reach Les Champs Montants. Turn right and return to your point of departure in CHAUX-DES-CROTENAY via a little stony path.

An enchanting location! Three natural lakes with turquoise and emerald waters, surrounded by greenery and exceptional wetlands offering an accessible family walk. From the parking lot, carefully cross the D 75 (yellow waymarking) and head to the Monts des Ifs intersection. Follow the path to the left below the road and reach the top of the LAC DU PETIT MACLU (Petit Maclu Lake). Take the good stony path along the lakes, heading past the Petit Maclu and the Grand Maclu, and after a small forest section, arrive at the edge of the Lac d’Ilay before joining up with the Chemin des lacs.  Continue on the path to your right (white and red waymarking) until you reach Lac d’Ilay.Continue on, following along the right of the D 75 (yellow waymarking), head past a pasture (with barriers to contain the livestock) and locate a grassy path just below the road towards the entrance of the village of Fresnois, at the junction with Chemin des Bornes.Take the good path to the right, bordered by meadows, for around 350 metres. At the fork, head left and join up with the D 75. Take a path to the right that heads away from the road towards Mont des Ifs.Carefully cross the road again to return to the Monts des Ifs parking lot.

Easy circuit, without great difficulty, ideal with children or to start. The loop revolves around 4 lakes of glacial origin, the deepest of which is Narlay. Also called Scotland by its resemblance to the Loch Mare region.

Petit Maclu and Grand Maclu, Ilay and Narlay: these are four emblematic lakes of the riparian Jura landscape often called “Little Scotland”. Families with young children should choose the trip around the three lakes, which is shorter and only includes one road crossing. From the parking lot, carefully cross the D 75 (yellow waymarking) and head to the Monts des Ifs intersection. Follow the path to the left below the road and reach the top of the LAC DU PETIT MACLU (Petit Maclu Lake). Take the good stony path along the lakes, heading past the Petit Maclu and the Grand Maclu, and after a small forest section, arrive at the edge of the Lac d’Ilay before joining up with the Chemin des lacs.  Continue on the path to your right (white and red waymarking) until you reach Lac d’Ilay. (If you would like to shorten this circuit and only take the trip around the three lakes, branch off to the right and take the Chemin des Bornes, followed by the Mont des Ifs.)From the Lac d’Ilay intersection, carefully cross the D 75 and follow a tree-lined path towards the hamlet of LA FROMAGERIE.Turn right (yellow waymarking) onto a long wooded path bordered by hedges, which heads to Le Raffour and then right to the village LE FRASNOIS.Turn left. Chemin de la Vierge heads along the back of the village and meets up with the D 75 to the right. Take the road to your left, head past the church and the town hall and take the road towards Lac de Narlay.At the Vers Narlay intersection, continue on the road to your left, and head towards the houses at the bottom of the hamlet. Follow the stony path that heads up and along the left of the lake. The path will take you up to the Monts des Ifs parking lot.

The classified site of Plateau des 7 lacs is a unique and amazing site. On the circuit, you will discover the lakes of Narlay, Ilay, Petit Maclu, Grand Maclu, Bonlieu and the belvedere of Saut Girard. Do not hesitate to take a break at the botanical and aromatic garden of La Fromagerie, and to bring back a little souvenir from "La boissellerie du Herisson".

7.4 km there and back, Elevation +255 m 3 hours to see all of the waterfalls

A lake, a stream, a river, waterfalls and gorges are on the naturally wealthy menu for this trail. For dessert, the works of the "tram" line and other quaint elements from the villages and hamlets you will pass through. The trail meets up the FONCINE-LE-BAS crossroads and ascends to the right (yellow waymarking) via the Grand-Vie farm road (oratory, former tramline crossing) before reaching Les Fumey. The grassy path to your right crosses the D 62. The road then serves the Fumey hamlet and leads to the Lac à la Dame crossroads. To your right, take the farm road uphill and follow along the Senge stream before fording the stream (pile of rocks). The trail skews off to the right into the forest (beautiful beech forest) and follows along a first clearing before descending towards the Cingernaux combe. Circumventing the combe, after a sharp turn, you will come to the D 127 in Malvaux (view onto the waterfalls of the la Ruine forebay). Cross the D 127, take the wide path below the road. Reach the LES-PLANCHES-EN-MONTAGNE WASHHOUSE by crossing the bridge over the Saine. The trail (white and red waymarking) follows the Landouette Gorges Trail to the left, which opens out onto le Martinet. The path then heads up the village following the road to the right (yellow waymarking) before reaching THE WASHHOUSE. To the left, the path heads along the Washhouse road (white and red waymarking) before heading up the Saine's right embankment and reaching the Fumey Badoz Factory Canal. To the right, the stony and shaded path (yellow waymarking) heads up the valley until it comes to the stream called la Pisse, which you will follow up to the left (passing under the viaduct) to reach Sous Bayard. The path heads up (white and red waymarking) the gorges of Malvaux, with a short section in the dark tunnel until it reaches the Douanets Viaduct. Cross the viaduct (yellow waymarking) to return to your starting point at the Champ de Mars.

The ski domain is situated in proximity of the Réserve Naturelle de la Haute Chaine du Jura. The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. One of the classified ski area of the Monts Jura resort, at the foothill of the Jura's highest peaks with one of the best panoramas in Europe with a stunning view of Mont Blanc and the Alps. Lélex-Crozet attracts all level skiers, with its numerous ski lifts, its varied slopes, its powder snow "spots" and its 140 snow-making machines. Monts Jura offers an ideal altitude for hiking. The Fierney gondola allows you to gain easier access to the peaks of the Jura mountain range. Marked and maintained trails await you. In winter and summer, the Le Fierney gondola lift allows to access the peaks of the Haute Chaîne du Jura more easily. From the top, the hiker is only a 2h30 walk to reach the Crêt de la Neige (1723 m), the highest point in the Jura. In summer, downhill MTB can be practised thanks to the 2 gondolas, Catheline and Fierney, enabling you to get back up easily and quickly to fully enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! In winter, snowshoeing allows enthusiasts to reach the summits more easily and enjoy the ridges. At first glance, the landscape from this adapted belvedere offers mainly greenery. But take a look at its many hues: to the right, the dark gorges carved out by the Saine unfurl and open onto a small and quieter valley, where the river idly winds through a humid area before reaching a small village to your left. This is Syam, known for its smithies and Villa Palladienne.

Surrounded by two forest massifs, Sur les Agrailles to the north and Mont des Ifs to the east, Narlay lake resembles a large 40-metre-deep funnel, making it the deepest natural lake in the Jura. Fed by a series of small emergences, its waters disappear into an underground outlet and feed the Chalain lake 7.5 km away as the crow flies.

This town hall is dated 1846 and has a remarkable bell tower. The bell - which represents the municipality’s voice, also has importance in civil life. The republican bell tower is managed by the town mayor or the founder and chimes the call of those with rights over the wood in municipal forests, municipal councils and fire hazards, etc. However, republican bell towers were never truly able to rival with the church bells, and were usually built when the church was too far from the centre of the village. Renovated and made bigger on several occasions since the 12th century, this church is constructed on the site of an old chapel and was classed a historical monument in 1906. It is home to remarkable works of art with its Eucharistic tower and statues.  On the hill overlooking the combe where this structure is built once stood a medieval castle from the 12th century, called “Du Champs des Mottes”. It was destroyed in 1691 on Louis XIV’s orders when he took over Franche-Comté. 

The Jura massif provides a long geological history. The limestone rocks formed during the Mesozoic era, between -170 million years and -90 million years. Much later, the pushing of the Alpes led these rocks to fold, between -11 million years and -3 million years. Lastly, the erosion caused by the icebergs, the freezing, the water and the wind, have progressively shaped the landscape. And Man has made the final contribution through farming and development.

The Petit Maclu and the Ilay lake provide 10 municipalities with drinking water, including Frasnois. 67,000 cubic meters are used up every year. The lakes on the Frasnois plateau are natural. The icebergs that covered the Jura 20,000 years ago have “planed” the earth and created the necessary depressions for the lakes to form. The limestone and moraine deposits from the movement of icebergs are watertight and are able to retain the water. To best preserve the quality of the water, a prefectural order bans the use of thermal engines.

This peculiar peat bog environment can be seen from the path to the Petit Maclu. The few trees and bushes able to grow in these difficult conditions (waterlogged soil, lack of oxygen, etc.) are birches, willows and alder buckthorn. In the spring, the white cotton grass bobbles - a plant typically found in these environments - can be seen above the grass. The lake used to be bigger. Little by little, aquatic plants have grown, and the permanently humid conditions have not allowed dead vegetation to decompose. By building up, all of these plants have formed what is called peat. In this peat bog, the peat isn’t very thick, but in the peat bog between the Grand Maclu lake and the Ilay lake, it has reached over 1.5m.

These diverse wetlands attract many species of insects, including dragonflies. Over half of the species in mainland France are located around ponds, lakes, rivulets and smaller pools on the site. The four-spotted chaser is easily recognisable with its very visible dots on the middle of each of its four wings. Adults of this large dragonfly species can be seen from May to September. Its wing can measure up to 4 cm long!  

Cleared by the Lemme, which has formed a wind gap here, the Morillon cliffs are a succession of vertical strata comprised of hard limestone ledges and marlstone layers that are more sensitive to erosion. This is a great location for a lesson in Jura geology: these sedimentary rocks were created around 200 million years ago, and their folds were created due to the mountain pressure between 11 million to 3 million years ago. Exposed by a geological cut, these layers are very visible and this site - which is now open to experienced climbers - is equipped with an interpretive signpost providing information of how this landscape came to exist.

Among the various environments that make up humid areas, reed beds play an essential role: they stabilise the bank and create an area where the plants present filter the water. It is a safe place and a reproductive area for many species, including birds, such as the Eurasian coot. Throughout the year, their short and powerful cries can be heard here.

Résidence Les Berlicants offers modern, comfortable, fully-equipped apartments for two to eleven people. In the center of the village of Mijoux, in the immediate vicinity, you'll find hiking trails through forests and alpine pastures, downhill and cross-country ski slopes in winter, and thrilling activities on the Faucille site such as the giant zip line, tobogganing on rails and much more. A large-capacity gîte where families, friends, colleagues or associations can get together for a weekend or a week in a warm, quiet and pleasant setting. Our guests have access to 18 large rooms, including 6 with balconies, all of which overlook the mountains and forests of the Jura massif. The Gîte offers a range of different formulas, from self-catering rentals with private use of the gîte, to rooms offered on an overnight basis with breakfast and table d'hôte in the evening. The vast reception room on the first floor is the perfect place to gather for meals, play billiards or table soccer, or enjoy a drink at the bar or in the lounge in front of the fireplace. The fully-equipped professional kitchen offers a wealth of possibilities for preparing unforgettable dining experiences, which continue on the large terrace with its Barnum set up from spring to autumn, where BBQs and aperitifs are a regular feature during the summer months. The center offers courses and activities according to the season: discovery class, snow class, multi-activities. The residence offers free rental of all or part of the premises, which include a professional kitchen, 2 catering rooms, an 80 m2 multi-purpose room, and four adaptable classrooms/activity rooms for educational stays in line with the teacher's/educator's/coach's pedagogical project. The vacation center combines four buildings, linked by corridors that allow you to move around without leaving the building. The accommodation comprises 90 places divided into 29 rooms (2 to 6 places) with shared sanitary facilities, including 2 PMR-accessible rooms with private sanitary facilities. The rooms are close to sanitary facilities equipped with washbasins and individual showers. The ESF can accompany you on mid-mountain hikes, ski tours, bike rides and snowshoe treks. The residence also caters for individuals, with overnight stays for hikers in the Dombes building.

Valérie and Marie-Flore warmly welcome you to their friendly gîte, ideal for a pleasant, relaxed stay. Stay in a 19th century building, located in a ski resort and at the heart of the Jura mountain range, offering a wide range of outdoor activities in summer and winter. Whether for one night or a longer stay, alone or with friends, you'll enjoy an exceptional natural setting. Every evening, Valérie proposes a menu based on local produce and specialities from elsewhere, with starter, main course and dessert, booked before 12 noon.

In the heart of the Haute chaîne du Jura, the La Loge refuge welcomes you to an exceptional site! A summer and winter guarded mountain hut at 1436 m altitude, situated on the GR9 and close to the Lélex-Crozet ski area, enjoy an overnight stay, a break or a tasty meal during your getaway to the Crêt de la Neige, hosted by Cathy & Franck.
