A complete circuit of the mountain trail area, the best possible way to soak up the atmosphere of the Pays des Écrins! This trail route takes you on a complete circuit of the Pays des Écrins, through the many valleys that make up this region! The first stage crosses the Durance valley before rising uphill towards Montbrison and passing over into the Vallouise valley. The route continues via the Col de Vallouise and on to Ailefroide, offering an unrivalled view of Mont Pelvoux. As you pass through Ailefroide, take the opportunity to admire this ancient hamlet with its alpine pastures, which has lost none of its charm and is surrounded by high granite walls. This stage culminates with a stretch along the Gyr until you come to Vallouise. The next stage runs from Vallouise to Puy Saint-Vincent. After passing through the larch trees at the Col de la Pousterle, you cross another two wild valleys, the valleys of Le Fournel and Freissinières. After running beneath the cliffs of the Tête de Gaulent, the route continues on to Champcella, a pretty crossroads between the valleys of Freissinières and La Durance. After passing through La Chapelle de Rame and La Roche-de-Rame, this last stage closes the loop in beautiful fashion with an ascent up to Lac de l'Ascension. You then have to reach Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières to complete this circuit of more than 100 km. 

Climb up to a high pass, follow the banks of mountain streams, discover Bouchier, be stunned by panoramic views A rich and full itinerary to admire and discover the Pays des Écrins! Starting from the campsite, head towards the village of Prelles on the road running alongside the railway line.  Go past the railway line and the N94 to reach Prelles (exercise caution: a dangerous and busy road) and then carry on through the village. Follow signs for Sachas via the D336. At the bend, keep an eye out for a path on the right. Take this and follow the banks of the Sachas mountain stream. Cross the mountain stream and carry on towards Ratière. The path crosses the Pra Piouzéou mountain stream and runs through Les Banchets. Skirt around Ratière. Take the path on the right and carry on until you reach the Col de la Trancoulette. At the pass, turn left to start the descent. Turn left to continue the descent and skirt around Le Clot des Amandiers. At the mountain stream La Trancoulette, continue right to the Croix de la Salcette, below Les Tenailles de Montbrison. Carry on towards the hamlet of Bouchier, and then drop back down to Prelles and back to your starting point.

A trail leading to the plateau of the Rocher Baron where an unrivalled view over one of the main climbing sites in the Pays de Écrins awaits you.&nbsp Starting from the campsite, head towards the hamlet of Le Villaret and go through it.  After the hamlet, take the path on the left which leads to the plateau of the Rocher Baron. At the intersection at the Rocher Baron, fork right to start the descent through stony terrain.  When you come to the Ressourcerie la Miraille reclamation and repurposing centre, skirt around it. At the give-way sign, head left towards the D36C. Then cross the bridge and at the roundabout head towards Le Villaret. Carry on along the D36 until you come to the hamlet of Le Villaret, then head back to the campsite following your outward route in reverse. 

A fun, eco-aware and educational excursion in the heart of unspoilt nature! From the car park, head towards the farm, taking the second right after the bridge. Go past the railway line and go along the edge of the farm and then follow the Durance. Continue uphill until you come to the railway line and follow it. At the panel at the Pont de Chirouze, continue by taking the uphill path on the right. When you come to the D4, turn right and follow it for a few metres. Keep an eye out for the path on the left; head towards Prelles. Take the D4 for a short distance; fork onto the path on the left to reach Prelles. In Prelles, turn left opposite the church to return to your starting point.

Easy circuit on small roads and forest tracks overlooking a glacial rock bar, the Rocher Baron. The route starts at the La Rochette housing development. Take the narrow road leading towards Sachas. At the intersection with a forest track, carry on along the narrow road leading up to Sachas As you enter Sachas, the road turns into a forest track on which you carry on uphill At the next intersection, ignore the track running uphill to the right and start to descend, continuing straight ahead After the Oratoire Saint-Ours, stay on the main road which leads down to Prelles When you come to a mountain stream, you will find a narrow road which you follow through the hamlet At the cemetery, turn left and follow the track and the GR route At the intersection with the road, pick up the route along which you climbed uphill and return to the starting point

Discover the Puy-Saint-André art trail created by Les Transhumances Artistiques, an environmental art residency. The Transhumances Artistiques loop is a unique experience combining art and nature in the heart of the Briançonnais region. It links the Maison de la Géologie with various hamlets, offering a walk punctuated by environmental artworks created by resident artists. Each installation reflects the richness of Alpine landscapes and their intimate connection with local traditions, while exploring themes such as ecology, transformation and coexistence. The trail is an invitation to poetic, interactive discovery, with each stop revealing new perspectives on the region's natural and cultural environment. Here's a brief description of the works on the Transhumances Artistiques trail: 1- La montagne suspendue (Suspended mountain) by Yoann Crépin: Positioned at a certain vantage point, the suspended wooden logs take on the silhouette of the mountain. 2- Forêt d'hommes by Barbara Fougnon: An ode to diversity, an act of deconstruction of virilist ideology and a vow of pacification between humans and towards other species. 3, 11, 16 - Les trois pauses observatoires by Jean Marc Voillot: An invitation to sit on one of the trail's three Scots pine chairs, on a seat made of grey limestone, pink guillestre or black serpentinite, to pause and observe the surrounding landscape, listen to nature and appreciate the moment... 4- Tisser l'avenir by Véronique Matteudi and Hubert Célérier: A work with a participatory dimension. Metamorphosis in progress, or the prefiguration of a new world woven by our imaginations. 5- Les flèches pacifistes by Yoann Crépin: Les flèches pacifistes like to play and dance with the wind, their aerial choreography disseminating peace and gentleness. 6- L'enlaçoir by Stéphanie Cailleau: L'Enlaçoir is a small shelter made of felted wool that invites the walker to embrace the tree in complete intimacy. 7- Hymne à la vie, fleurs et pistils by Pascal Sylva: The installation celebrates the ingenuity of living things and explores the relationships between ecology, biodiversity, gender stereotypes and inter-species interactions, offering insects a suitable habitat and harmoniously integrating bees into the local ecosystem. 8- "Tree cocoons" trans-human - trans-formation by Roger Rigorth: What transformation takes place inside these two giant cocoons in the tree? 9- Songe minéral by Yoann Crépin: Lulled by the sounds of the stream, the stones of the valley fall asleep and begin to dream: they dream of uniting, flowing and undulating... 10- Corvée, bacs et chéneaux by Pierre Guilloteau: A convivial, collaborative project using local materials. It features a group of residents we met at the canal chore, pyrographed on larch. 12- Mémoire Neuve - Puy-Saint-André by Helena Malak: Sacred space of engraved schist steles and 25-minute sound documentary made with the residents of Puy Saint André. "Together we evoke the forgotten of the mountain, the gestures once repeated, what grows after absence." 13- Germinance by Alain Bernegger: This work is a tribute to germination, symbolizing rooting, solar radiation and the metamorphosis of the seed. 14- Shelter by Réka Szabò and Stefano Bosi: Shelter symbolizes our integration with nature, embodying the seeds of future growth through our interaction with the environment. 15- Fragments d'une montagne (Fragments of a mountain) by Anne Perier: The map recounts fragments of the history of Puy-Saint-André, the layering of vegetation and the paths that have marked the lives of its inhabitants over time.

Running above the municipality of Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières, this circuit offers a tranquil, simple walk along easy, accessible paths. As you leave the car park of the mayor's office ("Mairie") in Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières, turn left. After crossing the Saint-Sébastien mountain stream, head right towards the Rocher Baron, a drivable track all the way When you reach the plateau of the Rocher Baron, head right At Le Clot de la Rama, carry on along the drivable track towards Le Pas du Rif Cross the footbridge over the Saint-Sébastien mountain stream, heading towards Le Poux Approximately 500 metres after the footbridge, turn right off the track and follow the path running downhill 200 metres after the water catchment, leave the track and turn right towards the municipality of Saint-Martin-de-Queyrières and your starting point

This snowshoe hike, accessible to the whole family, follows a wide trail that leads to the typical hamlet of Les Combes, made up of summer cottages belonging to the Puy-Saint-André and Puy Saint-Pierre families. Park in the large parking lot at the entrance to Puy-Chalvin, then walk to the top of the village. At the last house, follow the wide track that leads to the hamlet of Les Combes: it rises very gradually above the village to reach an EDF transformer and a small picnic area offering a magnificent panorama of Briançon, Prelles and the surrounding area. The trail then twists and turns on the mountainside, continuing on a balcony above the Sachas torrent, before rushing down the valley to the hamlet of Les Combes. On the opposite slope stands the Croix d'Aquilla: an easily recognizable rocky promontory overlooking the Foret Domaniale de Montbrison . The return journey takes the same route.

This pretty loop between the Montbrison state forest and the Partias Reserve leads to a magnificent panorama from the Rocher de Roure. A well-preserved itinerary, you'll come across a wide variety of remarkable flowers. From Puy-Saint-André, follow the asphalt road past the last houses (Lieu dit du Villaret). The road then becomes a wide dirt track. The start of the itinerary is that of the GR50. This wide track continues flat for about 1.3 kilometers up the mountainside towards the Sacha torrent, giving a fine view of the Tenailles de Montbrison. The trail ends when you reach the Foret Domaniale de Montbrison (signposted): at this point, take the small path on the left which descends towards the torrent, then cross the Torrent de Sacha footbridge. On the north-facing slope, the vegetation changes completely, with a multitude of orchids. The narrow path twists and turns through the heart of the forest. After the first 10 hairpin bends, the path is overlooked by the Rocher de Roure. Continue on this path, crossing the Pra Piouzéoui torrent, then negotiating the last hairpin bends to a fork. (approx. 2 km and 280 m ascent from the Torrrent de Sacha footbridge). At the fork in the road, leave the GR50 and take the right-hand track to the Crête des Alpes for 400 metres (Alt 1838). A magnificent panorama opens up over Briançon and Villard-Saint-Pancrace, with Cime du Mélézin and Grand Peygu opposite. The path descends steeply through the Bois des Ayes towards the torrent. At the fork, take the right-hand track towards the footbridge. Take a bend and ignore the footbridge: continue along the torrent, still on the right bank, to begin the return to the footbridge. Follow the trail back to the Villaret - Puy Saint André parking lot.

At the entrance to the Partias Regional Nature Reserve, this loop is ideal for families. From the Puy Chalvin parking lot, follow the road to the entrance of the hamlet. Take the first alley on your right, passing the Chapelle Saint-Lucie. At the crossroads, take the path alongside the house in front of you and follow it to the picnic area. At the junction with the picnic area, take the rightmost track and follow it for 2 km. Watch out for cars coming down from the hamlet of Les Combes. Once you've reached the hamlet of Les Combes, drive through the village to the small parking lot 400 m further on. Before the parking lot, take the path down to the river on your left. Then, instead of crossing the torrent, take the path on your left, signposted Puy-Saint-André/Sentier VTT. Follow the path for 3 km until you return to the picnic area you came across on the way up. Once you've reached the picnic area, take the trail back towards Puy Chalvin, which will be on your right at the foot of the hill. Once in Puy-Chalvin, cross the hamlet to return to the parking lot.

Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

Set at the bottom of the Vénéon valley, it offers panoramic views of the Pilatte glacier and the most prestigious peaks in the Écrins. TEMPORARILY CLOSED The Temple Ecrins refuge was completely renovated in 2018. It offers 48 beds, made up of modules for 1 to 3 people and equipped with comforters. Bright and welcoming, the refuge is equipped with showers. A wood-burning stove allows you to spend pleasant evenings by the fire, while enjoying the generous home-cooked meals offered by the janitor. The large window in the dining room offers a breathtaking view of the typical Oisans alpine landscape. HIKING IN THE HEART OF THE ECRINS NATIONAL PARK The Écrins massif is an exceptional area, open to all, with a rare natural, cultural and landscape heritage. and landscapes. To protect these treasures, the heart of the park is marked with blue-white-red painted flags, where regulations must be respected. Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

The GR 653D is the Via Domitia. It is the second stage of the pilgrims' way to Santiago de Compostella, the Way of Saint James. This Grande Randonnée follows the route of the Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road built from 118 BC onwards. It linked Italy to the Iberian Peninsula, crossing Narbonese Gaul. 20 days should be allowed to travel its 459 kilometres of paths.

The chapel of Saint-Jacques-de-Prelles was built in the Middle Ages, in 1502, on the ancient pilgrims' way from Italy to Santiago de Compostella. It is surmounted by an arcade bell tower, decorated at the top with blind arcades with pointed arches. A number of wall paintings depicting historical episodes adorn the interior of the chapel, likely dating from the fifteenth century. They were restored in 1955. This chapel was listed as a Historical Monument in 1906 and it contains objects also listed as Historical Monuments, such as the bell which dates from 1639 or the eighteenth century silver, gold and brass ciborium.

The alpine anemone or the alpine pulsatilla blooms here in the spring. It is a plant with a downy covering of white hairs on the large drooping flowers which are dark purple, contrasting with the bright yellow of the numerous stamens, and with very indented leaves. In summer, its fruits with a long pappus, or tuft, form a feathery seed head atop the stem. Although it is frequently found in localised areas, it is nevertheless a rare species dependent on steppe meadows in the Durance valley.

Golden yellow needles in autumn, purple cones in the spring... The larch offers colour interest throughout the year, and rather suits its title "the tree of light". It drops its soft deciduous needles in autumn and winter. In spring, the slender branches of this conifer are dotted with female flowers, which will develop into cones, and male flowers. The larch thrives on the north-facing slopes and lights up the mountainsides. 

This is one of the most common trees, provided the ground is relatively cool. It is characterised by its pinnate leaves, that is to say, made up of several segments, and in winter is can be recognised by its large black leaf buds. The ash was extremely important in times past: its foliage was used to feed cattle and its hard, flexible wood was used to make a variety of objects such as tool handles. 

This is the smallest member of the family of forest maples, growing to a height of 8 to 15 metres. It can live for up to 150 years. Its leaves have five round lobes; they are winged with wings sticking out in opposite directions. It is not fussy as to the dampness of the soil and it can withstand cold temperatures and drought. It is also an excellent bee forage plant, which can be enhanced by the proximity of a hive.

Erected in the hamlet of Prelles at an altitude of 1,400 metres, this oratory overlooks and watches over the Durance valley. It resembles a small rectangular niche closed off by a glazed wooden door, in which a statue of the Virgin Mary and a metal cross have been placed. But who was this saint? Known as Saint Ursus in English, he was a monk who was born in Ireland and travelled to this region where his evangelisation and help for the poor left a lasting mark on the population.

The great tit is one of the biggest in the family. It is easily recognisable by its yellow underparts with a black median covert, its shiny black head and white cheeks. It has quite an extensive song repertoire, all very beautiful and charming, in particular its finch-like « pinc-pinc », its chattering « ti tuui » and its cheerful « si yutti yutti » . It is present over a large proportion of the territory, in all kinds of tree-covered areas, from boreal forests to gardens.

The rock through which the tunnel has been cut is a quartzite, a metamorphic, siliceous rock which is very hard and formed by grains of quartz welded together. It originates from sand deposited 230 million years ago in the still-shallow waters of the nascent Alpine ocean, and brought here by the erosion of the surrounding topography. In places, undulations can be seen on the tunnel wall: these are ripple marks, "fossilised" creased created by water flowing over the sand. 

Gentle and melancholic calls can be heard coming from trees in the forest. They are the calls of the bullfinch, a plump and timid little passerine. The male can be identified from his pinkish red underside, while the female's is beige. Both have a black cap. They often live in small groups, staying in contact with one another through their little calls. It is a year-round resident.

Come for lunch or dinner in the exceptionnal setting of this inn ! The Arpelin is located at an altitude of 1745m, on the Great Alps road and at the foot of the mythical Col de l'Izoard. Discover the inn's great speciality: fire-cooked lamb! You can also enjoy tourtons, blueberry tarts and other regional and mountain delicacies. Since the end of 2024, the inn is run by its two new managers, Candice and Thibaut Lerich Meignien, who have introduced a few new features the return of raclette and a games library accessible from the age of 3, adapted to all ages and player profiles. Restaurant of typical high mountain pasture, located in Fontcouverte, a hamlet +1860m. Formerly a place where cheese was made, the Fruitière now operates as a restaurant, and is an unmissable stop in the higher Clarée valley. Anything from snacks to real meals, you will find housecooked, local food and moutain specialties. Open everyday in wintertime, summertime and All Saints' Day holidays. Booking in advance is recommanded for lunches, and necessary for dinners (dinners only in summertime). Access in wintertime is only on foot/snowshoe, or ski. 1h30 from Névache Ville-Haute. During the summer, the road is accessible either by car, bike or on foot. Please note that credit/debit cards are not accepted : cash or cheques only.

The talents of the chef and his assistant bring about the alliance of regional specialities ('tourtons', 'ravioles', 'donkey's ears'...) and sophisticated recipes (lamb tapenade, chicken with crawfish, Rossini fillet steak, etc.).

Located on the Grandes Alpes road at an altitude of 2300 m, the Napoleon refuge, built in 1858, is one of 6 refuges built thanks to a bequest from Napoleon 1st to the Hautes-Alpes department in gratitude for the warm welcome he received from the locals on his return from Elba. The refuge is not far from the listed "Casse Déserte" site. The Refuge Napoléon team welcomes you in summer and winter alike for a warm welcome and a gourmet home-cooked meal: - mountain specialities, - dishes of the day, - delicious homemade tarts... Our cosy rooms await you for a relaxing break. In winter, after a heart-warming meal at lunchtime or in the evening, the refuge will lend you a toboggan for the 7 km descent to the hamlet of Laus.

In 1891, 4 tonnes of wood were brought by train to L'Argentière before being transported by car, then on donkeys up to the old Puiseux shelter. It was then pulled up by men using sleds to the intended spot. This mountain refuge was used for 70 years before becoming a storeroom for the wardens and then lodgings for their helpers in 1962. The summer before, 145 tonnes of materials were this time heliported, to enable the construction of the Pelvoux mountain refuge. It was inaugurated on the 15th July 1962 in the presence of Maureice Herzog, high commissioner for Youth and Sports at the time.

Topping the rocky outcrop which closes the Celse-Nière valley, this stone refuge was built in 1983 to replace the old wooden shelter which had become insufficient. This modern building has 76 places which belong to the French Alpine Club; it is guarded between the middle of June and the beginning of September. It is at the entrance to the summits which have marked the history of mountaineering: the Ailefroide, the Pointe des Boeufs rouges, and the Pic du Sélé...

Built in 1925, the first Sélé refuge was situated at 2700 m under a rocky canopy which collapsed in 1954. It was rebuilt two years later by a company from Briançon belonging to Ferdinand Bayrou, it was still made from wood, but 600 m lower down from the first one. Still used as a refuge in winter, it is open to the public from the middle of September.

The refuge is an ancient witness to the pioneering days of mountaineering in Vallouise in the second half of the 19th century... At that time it was situated at the foot of the glacier. It was built in 1886 to provide shelter under the rock for the first mountaineers. With its small dimensions, and materials of stone and wood, it represents a historical reference. Its remains shelter an exhibition retracing its history.

To provide mountaineers with a little more comfort, refuges gradually replaced the early bivouacs and shelters. Thus, the Tuckett refuge, built in 1886, superseded the rock shelter still visible nearby. It was replaced in 1948 by the Refuge du Glacier Blanc and later converted into a museum. The existing Refuge des Écrins, standing at the top of the glacier, was built in 1968. It replaced the Refuge Caron which had been built in 1922, itself replacing an initial 1903 Caron shelter.
