Camping des 5 Vallées: Discover Briançon

Some old ways steeped in history (chapels with paints and frescoes, or old realizations to favor the agriculture of mountain...) allow to discover Puy Saint André and his hamlets. Carte IGN n°: 3536OT

Family outing in and around the village. Pass by the lime kilns. The route takes in wide tracks, borders an irrigation canal and sometimes the asphalt road. From the mountain center, head down the village streets to the lime kiln. Caution: do not cross the cultivated fields on the left, but return along the track to the sports field. Then take a path on the right leading back to the Paroir housing estate. Turn right down the D136. Before the level crossing, turn left along the railroad line. Go up through the meadows, past the Rocher des Aymards, and back up to the main street, Turn right on the GR 653D along the D36. Leave the D36 at the first intersection on the left. A short climb brings you to another watering canal, which leads back to the Centre Montagne.

A quick loop through various mountain hamlets. In the undergrowth, the trail is demanding, with some fast sections and steep switchbacks. Departure from the mountain center on a path that undulates through fields on a balcony above Villard. Continue through the woods and climb to Rocher Baron. A few more hairpin bends to Clot de la Rama, then take a narrow, technical path to Clot de l'Ase. A good path leads to Clot des Prés. A series of downhill paths and tracks takes you back to the center of the mountain.

An undergrowth loop to stretch your legs and discover the village forest. Family-friendly. Departure from the mountain center on a path that undulates through fields on a balcony above Villard. After 3 hairpin bends uphill, fork left and return to the center of the mountain on a beautiful forest track that passes near the old mines.

A sporty loop with an interesting descent. Shorter than N°62, it allows you to discover other trails in the Bois du Mélézin and can be combined with one of the other itineraries in the area. From the mountain center, return to the parking lot, then turn right up the small road towards Les Ayes. Turn right onto the paved Mélezin road. At the 5th bend, go straight ahead on a track, then descend to Clot des Près. A series of downhill paths and tracks will take you back to the center of the mountain.

A sporty loop between undergrowth and lakes. Interesting descent. Leave the mountain center and return to the parking lot. Turn right up the small road. Turn left onto the track leading to the hamlet of Les Ayes. Continue as far as Lac de l'Orceyrette and return along the same route. In the hairpin bend before the bridge over Les Ayes, go straight on up to Le Mélézin. Descend into the Bois du Villard on a beautiful, technical, winding descent. At Lauzin, turn left to reach the mountain center.

Take on one of the most legendary passes in the Alps: the Col du Galibier! From the Centre Montagne parking lot, take the road on the left, then take the first road on the left again to reach the village center. Continue straight ahead at the next two stop signs. At the traffic circle next to the Bialler factory, take the leftmost exit to cross the bridge. At the next traffic circle, take the 1st right and continue straight ahead. Drive through the traffic lights towards Grenoble. At the next traffic circle, above Géant Casino, take the left-hand exit, heading for Grenoble. At the Briançon exit, take the second exit off the traffic circle, heading for Grenoble, then drive up the Serre Chevalier valley to the Col du Lautaret, for about 23 km. At the pass, turn right towards the Col du Galibier and drive up the pass. At the traffic lights in the Galibier tunnel, turn right to complete the ascent of the pass.

This beautiful loop takes you in the footsteps of the Tour de France. You'll ride along small mountain roads to reach the highest point: the Col de l'Izoard. From the Centre Montagne parking lot in Villard-Saint-Pancrace, head back down towards the village center, taking the road on your left and then the first road on your left which descends steeply. At the bottom of this road, turn left and drive to Le Villaret. At Le Villaret, continue straight ahead on the main road towards Saint-Martin de Queyrières. You'll come to a traffic circle in Saint-Martin de Queyrières. Turn left over the bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn left and follow the road until it joins the main road to Briançon. Once on the main road, enter the village of Queyrières and take the first wheel on your left, following signs for Les Vigneaux. Continue straight on to Les Vigneaux. In the village of Les Vigneaux, when you reach the crossroads with the main road, turn left towards L'Argentière-la-Bessée. Once in L'Argentière-la-Bessée, continue straight ahead through the village. As you leave the village, leave the road that joins the main road and go straight on until you reach the climb that leads to Fressinières and Champcella. At the top of the hill, turn left towards Champcella and follow the main road until you reach Eygliers. Once in Eygliers, follow the main road into the village and rejoin Route Nationale 94. At the stop sign, turn right and continue straight ahead. At the traffic circle on the outskirts of Eygliers, turn left towards Guillestre. In Guillestre, follow signs for Queyras and Arvieux. As you approach Chateau-Vieille-Ville, turn left towards the Col de l'Izoard. Once at the summit, return to Cervières and continue towards Briançon. Once in Briançon, pass the hamlet of Fontchristiane and continue along the main road. At the traffic circle at the bottom of the descent, take a sharp left and go straight ahead. At the end of the road, you'll come to a traffic circle where you should go straight ahead. At the next traffic circle, continue on the main road, which bends slightly to the left, and at the next traffic circle, turn left. Once you've passed the Villard-Saint-Pancrace entrance sign, stay on the main road and turn right at the next traffic circle. Then take the first road on your left, signposted "Les Ayes" and "Centre Montagne". After going up the street, you'll come to a small square. Turn right between the two houses. Be careful, the street is narrow and some vehicles may be coming the wrong way. Pass the narrowing, then the bridge, and continue straight ahead. The road bends slightly to the right. At the top of the climb, you'll see the Centre Montagne sign: turn right to reach the parking lot.

The Moulin de Sachas Bird Sanctuary is the perfect place to discover the rich fauna that inhabits our forests. The refuge is equipped with information panels, bird and bat boxes and insect nests. Detailed itinerary : 1. Leave the Centre Montagne parking lot to take the road towards the Ayes valley 2. At the next junction, continue towards Les Ayes. Then take the path on your left. The path is on the last bend out of the village, just before the letterbox marking the entrance to a property. Be careful, there are three steps down. 3. Go down the Serre path until you reach the tarmac road on Rue des Ayes. Turn right and walk along the roadside. 4. Cross the bridge and continue on the main road. 5. Before the road narrows, take a small lane on the right, between house no. 9, rue des Ayes, and house no. 7, rue des Ayes. A sign on the wall of house no. 9 indicates Moulin de Sachas. 6 Go around the back of the houses and past the Moulin de Sachas. 7. At the Moulin de Sachas, take the path slightly up on the right. A wooden pedestrian baffle marks the start. 8. Follow the canal-side path to the gravel pit. 9. At the gravel pit, approach the edge of the torrent des Ayes to read the final signs. 10. At the edge of the torrent des Ayes, turn left to go up to the center of the gravel pit. Be careful, you'll have to walk over the canal intake. At the gravel pit, look out for nesting boxes high up in the trees. 11. From the gravel pit, take the wide track. Walk past the reach and continue along the track as close as possible to the torrent. 12. Follow the track along the banks of the torrent des Ayes until you return to the village. Be careful, there are gardens on both sides of the track as you reach the village. 13. Back on the asphalt road, cross the bridge on your left. Then take the Chemin du Serre path up to the Centre Montagne. 14. At the top of the path, turn right onto Route des Ayes and head back down towards Centre Montagne. 15. At the next crossroads, keep left to reach the parking lot in front of you at the next junction.

Thanks to the ski lifts, you can easily reach the high altitude forts of Les Gondrans, part of the Maginot Line. All that's left to do is climb Mont Janus to reach the fort and its panoramic views.

An ideal hike for families A downhill hike from the top of the Chalvet cable car to a magnificent viewpoint over the Clarée valley. Don't miss the military pill at the top of the Rocher diseur, a witness to the Second World War. Highest point: 2135 m (Arrival of the Chalvet gondola) Type of route: loop Distance: 5 km Duration: 1 h 30 (+ 10 min ascent in the gondola) Up: 85 m Down: 370 m ITINERARY 1. Take the Chalvet cable car (behind the Tourist Office) 2. On arrival, turn left towards the Terrasses restaurant 3. Continue straight ahead on the track towards Rocher diseur. 4. At Sous le rocher diseur, go straight up the rocky spur towards Rocher diseur. At the top, you can admire a large part of the Clarée valley and in the distance Briançon and its forts. On your right, you will find a military pill 5. Go back the way you came, first under the "rocher diseur", then straight ahead on the track until you come to a crossroads with a path going down on your right, heading back to Montgenèvre. 6. Take the path, which takes you back to the heights of the village. Go down the rue de la Combe. Turn left onto Rue du Rocher de Dix Heures, then left again onto Rue du Praya. At the bottom of Rue du Praya, turn left into Rue de l'Eglise to return to the Tourist Office.

In the valley of Buffère at 2076 m, open summer / winter, for a gourmet stopover, your hiker step or the base camp of your nature stay This former alpine chalet comfortably rehabilitated by Nadette and Claude Devalle is accessible on foot during Summer in 45 minutes from the nearest parking place and during Winter on skis or snowshoes in 2 hours from the village of Névache, Ville-Haute . It is equipped with 30 places in rooms from 2 to 6 people, bathrooms with hot showers, a library lounge area. Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. In summer, you can come either by car to the parking lot of the same name some 300 m upstream from the refuge, or by shuttle bus, depending on the time of day and the season: Accueil Tourisme Névache. On the first floor, two small dormitories with single and double beds for 4 people, and two dormitories for 7 and 8 people with single or double beds equipped with sheets and comforters (bring your own sheets and comforter bags). On the first floor, sanitary facilities and hot showers (bring your own toiletries). In the dining room, which seats between 36 and 40, a beautiful Masse (Tulikivi) stove radiates a gentle warmth that you'll appreciate whatever the weather! For humid summer days or snowy winters, a dryer running on excess energy from the pico power station will dry your clothes and shoes in no time. Electricity is provided by a pico-power station fed by the Cula torrent, making the refuge completely self-sufficient. A stopover for motorcyclists on the Route des Grandes Alpes A thirst-quenching, gourmet stopover for cyclists and mountain bikers, A rest area for donkey trekkers, who can enjoy the meadows beneath the refuge. A meeting point where you can simply enjoy the view from the terrace and take full advantage of nature.

Terzo Alpini is a refuge located in the Vallée Étroite, at an altitude of 1780 m. It is part of the commune of Névache. The Vallée Etroite is part of the commune of Névache, and is a listed and protected site. Managed by Riccardo and Anna Novo, the refuge is open in summer from mid-June to mid-September, and in winter from mid-February to mid-April. It is also open out of season on weekends (booking required). For New Year's Eve, reservations by telephone only. Catering by prior arrangement. The refuge : Terzo Alpini welcomes up to 34 guests (20 in rooms and 14 in dormitories). The refuge has hot showers on every floor, summer and winter alike (hot showers cost €1). Both the small rooms and the dormitory are equipped with wooden bunk beds, making for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The refuge comprises 2 rooms for 2 people, 2 rooms for 4 people, 1 room for 8 people and a dormitory for 14 people. Accommodation 1/2 board, picnic baskets on request. The cuisine: At Terzo Alpini, Italian tradition comes first! You can try Piedmontese starters such as anchovies au vert, beans in salad, petite tome, cold cuts, sweet and sour zucchinis and many other specialities. At Terzo Alpini, polenta has pride of place! It's put more than one exhausted hiker back on his feet! It's served with alpine cheeses, meat and sausage, or venison cooked by Riccardo. Of course, we also offer daily specials such as ossobuco, tajine and more... And for children, we have a special menu. The Vallée Étroite is the ideal location for a wide range of sporting activities: ski touring, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, hiking and horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing on the magnificent routes of the "Paroi des militaires"... Accessible on foot from Névache, Modane and Bardonecchia in summer, but also by car, it can only be reached by cross-country skiing, ski touring or snowshoeing in winter.

This mill, built in the 18th century, enabled families from Villard-Saint-Pancrace to grind their flour. It had two millstones, one with a metal shaft and the other with a wooden shaft, dating from 2 different eras. The mill ceased to operate during the German occupation in 1943. These two millstones and rods included twenty paddles to receive the water, and a hopper fixed to the floor above the millstones to receive the grain. Over the years, it was perfected to produce flour of two different qualities. The flour, which was then discharged through a chute into a wooden bar, passed through a sieve to separate the flour from the wheat grain husk known as "bran". This mill produced a characteristic noise, due in particular to the clattering of the belts on the two millstones, the friction of the gears and the water that fell from the wheel to give the necessary force to grind the wheat. A dozen families from Villard-Saint-Pancrace came to grind their flour and maintain the mill. The children and women took care of the "corvée" of the canal bringing the water from the Ton canal to the mill. This involved cleaning, cutting, mowing and weeding the canal to ensure that the water reached the mill. Restoration of the machinery will enable visitors to see the mill in operation, and discover its history, intimately linked with the lives of the village's inhabitants from 1732 to 1943. A press is also present, although it no longer works, and was used to make marmot oil and walnut oil. The building has been restored as closely as possible to its former glory, allowing the site to relive the nuances of its past.

The chapel of Saint-Claude was built at an altitude of 1,350 metres in the locality known as Sachas to the north-east of Prelles, on the edge of the municipality of Puy-Saint-André. It has been dated to the eighteenth and nineteenth century at the latest, and appears on the Napoleonic cadastre. It is of elongated plan construction with a flat chevet and a single nave, made up of two vaulted spans of arrises (sharp edges formed by the meeting of two surfaces). The earlier gable is surmounted by a wooden steeple with a hipped roof. It is included on the General Inventory of the Cultural Heritage.

This is the smallest member of the family of forest maples, growing to a height of 8 to 15 metres. It can live for up to 150 years. Its leaves have five round lobes; they are winged with wings sticking out in opposite directions. It is not fussy as to the dampness of the soil and it can withstand cold temperatures and drought. It is also an excellent bee forage plant, which can be enhanced by the proximity of a hive.

With a very dog-like silhouette, the red fox is easily recognisable by its long bushy tail, but also by its long muzzle and large pointed ears with black tips. So it cannot be confused with any other species in France. It owes its name simply to the colour of its coat which is predominantly red. This species is ubiquitous. In fact, it frequents very varied habitats thanks to its diverse diet. It is therefore found over a large part of the territory.

The great tit is one of the biggest in the family. It is easily recognisable by its yellow underparts with a black median covert, its shiny black head and white cheeks. It has quite an extensive song repertoire, all very beautiful and charming, in particular its finch-like « pinc-pinc », its chattering « ti tuui » and its cheerful « si yutti yutti » . It is present over a large proportion of the territory, in all kinds of tree-covered areas, from boreal forests to gardens.

Erected in the hamlet of Prelles at an altitude of 1,400 metres, this oratory overlooks and watches over the Durance valley. It resembles a small rectangular niche closed off by a glazed wooden door, in which a statue of the Virgin Mary and a metal cross have been placed. But who was this saint? Known as Saint Ursus in English, he was a monk who was born in Ireland and travelled to this region where his evangelisation and help for the poor left a lasting mark on the population.

The alpine anemone or the alpine pulsatilla blooms here in the spring. It is a plant with a downy covering of white hairs on the large drooping flowers which are dark purple, contrasting with the bright yellow of the numerous stamens, and with very indented leaves. In summer, its fruits with a long pappus, or tuft, form a feathery seed head atop the stem. Although it is frequently found in localised areas, it is nevertheless a rare species dependent on steppe meadows in the Durance valley.

This is one of the most common trees, provided the ground is relatively cool. It is characterised by its pinnate leaves, that is to say, made up of several segments, and in winter is can be recognised by its large black leaf buds. The ash was extremely important in times past: its foliage was used to feed cattle and its hard, flexible wood was used to make a variety of objects such as tool handles. 

The GR 653D is the Via Domitia. It is the second stage of the pilgrims' way to Santiago de Compostella, the Way of Saint James. This Grande Randonnée follows the route of the Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road built from 118 BC onwards. It linked Italy to the Iberian Peninsula, crossing Narbonese Gaul. 20 days should be allowed to travel its 459 kilometres of paths.

Golden yellow needles in autumn, purple cones in the spring... The larch offers colour interest throughout the year, and rather suits its title "the tree of light". It drops its soft deciduous needles in autumn and winter. In spring, the slender branches of this conifer are dotted with female flowers, which will develop into cones, and male flowers. The larch thrives on the north-facing slopes and lights up the mountainsides.

Come for lunch or dinner in the exceptionnal setting of this inn ! The Arpelin is located at an altitude of 1745m, on the Great Alps road and at the foot of the mythical Col de l'Izoard. Discover the inn's great speciality: fire-cooked lamb! You can also enjoy tourtons, blueberry tarts and other regional and mountain delicacies. Since the end of 2024, the inn is run by its two new managers, Candice and Thibaut Lerich Meignien, who have introduced a few new features the return of raclette and a games library accessible from the age of 3, adapted to all ages and player profiles. An arcade machine has also been installed for even more fun. The must-try fire-cooked lamb is almost always available booked in advance, depending on arrivals. Restaurant of typical high mountain pasture, located in Fontcouverte, a hamlet +1860m. Formerly a place where cheese was made, the Fruitière now operates as a restaurant, and is an unmissable stop in the higher Clarée valley. Anything from snacks to real meals, you will find housecooked, local food and moutain specialties. Open everyday in wintertime, summertime and All Saints' Day holidays. Booking in advance is recommanded for lunches, and necessary for dinners (dinners only in summertime). Access in wintertime is only on foot/snowshoe, or ski. 1h30 from Névache Ville-Haute. During the summer, the road is accessible either by car, bike or on foot. Please note that credit/debit cards are not accepted : cash or cheques only.

The refuge is not far from the listed "Casse Déserte" site. In 1891, 4 tonnes of wood were brought by train to L'Argentière before being transported by car, then on donkeys up to the old Puiseux shelter. It was then pulled up by men using sleds to the intended spot. This mountain refuge was used for 70 years before becoming a storeroom for the wardens and then lodgings for their helpers in 1962. The summer before, 145 tonnes of materials were this time heliported, to enable the construction of the Pelvoux mountain refuge. It was inaugurated on the 15th July 1962 in the presence of Maureice Herzog, high commissioner for Youth and Sports at the time.

The refuge is an ancient witness to the pioneering days of mountaineering in Vallouise in the second half of the 19th century... At that time it was situated at the foot of the glacier. It was built in 1886 to provide shelter under the rock for the first mountaineers. With its small dimensions, and materials of stone and wood, it represents a historical reference. Its remains shelter an exhibition retracing its history.

Small cozy alpine hut, nestled at an altitude of 2223 m in the gentle Clarée valley. It is located on a mound between larches, high steep walls and beautiful valleys with rounded shapes. Originality of the refuge: near the refuge, you can spend a night in a traditional Mongolian house: a yurt of about 20 square meters, provided with 5 beds with real duvets. Meals and toilets at the refuge. Atmosphere and comfort guaranteed! All the contrasting atmosphere of this beautiful Cerces massif is there.

Perched on a rock, Les Bans mountain refuge offers a clear view of the Onde valley on one side and the cirque of high summits that surround the valley to the other side. It was made of dressed stones roughly fifty years ago and can sleep 22 people. It is very animated during the day as it welcomes walkers who have come to taste local specialities, but it regains its calm in the evening and offers a valuable lookout for observing ibex and chamois. You are sure to have an unforgettable evening in the end of the world atmosphere of this refuge thanks to the warm welcome from the wardens and the soup made in the solar oven.
