CAMPASUN Camping Le Soleil: Discover Esparron-de-Verdon

I love this rich and pleasant stroll throughout the year taking advantage of the landscapes especially in spring with the maximum flowering. From the car park of the tourist office, get on the D82 road and turn right towards the castle and its fountain. Turn right in 100m at the intersection between the roads of La Tuilière and Quinson. 1- Take the right route (Lake Road and Tuilière Road). After 50m on the Chemin de Tuilière, turn left onto the GR discovery trail (red and white markings). The entire climb, on a trail, is common with this special course. Pass in front of the viewpoint of the Tuilière. Cross a small valley and reach, to the top, a crossroads of tracks at a place known as Séouve. 2- At the crossroad turn right (yellow signs) and follow "pont coupé 1.5km" 3- Leave the trail that leads to the relay and take the path on the left, follow the trail. (Careful, the descent to the lake is a bit abrupt!) 4- At the bottom of the road turn right and join the paved road Chemin de Tuiliére, follow it to point 1. Continue on the same route as before.

A Esparron de Verdon, between the lake and hills, discover the history of the village, its castle and the local flora. From the car park of the tourist office, get on the D82 road and turn right towards the castle and its fountain. Reach on 100m the intersection to the right between the roads of the Tuilière and Quinson. 1- Take the right route (Lake Road and Tuilière Road). After 50m on the path of Tuilière, turn left by the discovery trail. The entire climb, on a trail, is common with this special course. Pass in front of the viewpoint of the Tuilière. Cross a small valley and reach, to the top, a crossroads of tracks at a place known as Séouve. 2 - Exit the discovery trail and turn left leaving the track towards Sainte-Magdeleine. Cross the plateau on about 800m. After coming out of the forest, along the fields, go past a small stone cottage and reach the intersection with the Quinson path. 3 - Take a sharp left and go down the path through the hill. Once on the road, follow it to the left for 150m and take the path starting on the right. Go down for another 400m and reach the intersection with the access track to Bastide Neuve. Continue across on the main track and reach the road at 200m. 4 - Turn left and go through it to the village. At about 700m, go past the Sainte-Magdeleine chapel. Continue to the intersection with the Quinson road. Follow the signs towards Esparron to reach the castle and the route taken to go.

A remarkable family circuit between banks, cliffs, and beaches with beautiful views of protected and landscaped areas. From Saint-Julien beach go on the right (starting post of the trail) climb the few steps and follow the path along the old Verdon canal (yellow and red marking GR® de Pays). Pass the water intake of EDF and the Canal de Provence and walk on the path between the lake and the channel. Pass the stone bridge of the Barade and continue on this path to the end of the canal a little before the tunnel closed by a gate turn left. 1- Go through the opening of the channel turn right and climb on the plateau overlooking the lake. Follow the markings on the cliff (note you are on a Var ENS Sensitive Natural Area) do not go out of the path, until a large pebble track.2- At Poteau Balcon du lac (385 m) - Go down the track to the left to its end, cross the channel and reach the edge of the lake by a path on the left.. Continue to follow the path along the riverbanks past the "Ponton du Lac" and continue to the level of the concrete bridge. Continue along the route of the old canal guard road to the left of it. Follow him to the house of the canal guard (Provence canal property) on the left at the locality of the district. 3- Return either by the track going up on the right (Beacknoning) At the next intersection continue straight and join point (2). Return to departure by the route taken on the way. Otherwise redo the return by the same path.

After strolling through the narrow streets of this typical village of Haute Provence, discover the landscapes and views of the dam and the Verdon valley. From the village square follow the GR®4 (red and white markings) up the alleys to the clock tower. Exit the village to the west and pass a small bridge. 1- Leave the road in a left turn to continue straight ahead past the campsite and follow the stone road which climbs quickly in the pines towards the plateau. 2- Leave the road on the left and continue straight on the GR®4 and follow the direction Gréoux-les-Bains. 3- Turn left the GR® and cross old fields of lavender then continue in the forest. At the first crossroad, turn left. At the second, with a very large pine tree, turn right. Finally on the third, go left (south-west) towards Gréoux-les-Bains and the Verdon. 4- At the edge of the road, turn left, due south and left again until the D952. Cross it and go down to Verdon. 5- Follow the Verdon on the left for 650m, then at the post arrow follow the path on the left until the D952. Cross it then turn right and continue for 350m until the next post pole. 6- Get to the left and climb towards Buffe Arnaud. 7- At the post pole "Buffe Arnaud", continue straight on towards St-Martin-de-Brômes and follow the ridge to point 2. Then take a right and return by the same way to the starting point.

At Allemagne-en-Provence, follow the trail of a past rich in knightly history! From the Place du 16 Juin 1944 (square), at the foot of the castle of Allemagne, follow the D952 towards Riez. Immediately after the bridge of the Tartavel valley, take the small path on the right, marked in yellow. 1- Go up by the footpath, under the oaks, amidst the thyme, boxwood and broom. Halfway up, pass at the foot of a column and continue in the woods until the chapel (equipped picnic area). 2- From the top, go back down through Allemagne-en-Provence by a wider path behind the chapel until the Route de Riez. The end of the trail follows the D952 for 500m (watch out for cars, walk to the right of the road!). Go past the old mill village, now converted into a hotel and restaurant. Reach the car park of the starting point.

If there is a real gem in the Verdon, it is the Lake Esparron, intimate, wild and heavenly. Exit the car park, go up the steps past the post office and continue to the roundabout and turn right on the Terdobbiate street follow the signs GR® de Pays (yellow and red) to the l'éclou hamlet.. 1- Turn left, cross the hamlet. Walk in the undergrowth and go down again to join a tarred path. 2- Turn right and 150 m further continue along the large dirt track on the left. 3- At the crossing of the tracks, leave the big track that goes straight (barrier) and continue on the right. At the Pole 64 "Gabiane” continue straight following the yellow and red markings4- Follow the track that continues on the right. 5- At the fire hydrant go down to the left for 1.6 km. 6- Continue to descend to the right.7- Get to the SCP house turn right at the post "Le Quartier" pass next to the barrier and continue towards the lake. At the post 20 turn left and follow the old canal by the small path. 8- At the (pole 21 ) turn right and continue to walk on the edge of the creeks, pass the lake pontoon (post 22) and follow the beaches bypassing the lawns always following the yellow and red markings. 9- Cross the old canal and go up by the large track opposite to (post 23, balcony of the lake). 10- Turn right and follow the signs (yellow and red) on the cliffs and do not leave the marked trails. At the end go down to reach the edge of the old canal. 11- At the pole 24, cross the passage in the old canal and continue on the flat path between the lake and the canal and head for Saint Julien beach. 12-At Saint Julien beach turn around and come back by the same road to point (11) "the Balcony of the lake" at this level turn right and go up the old medieval road. Pass the barrier of the E.N.S and get to a platform down the left track and join the point (7 le Quartier). Take the same path for the return to Saint-Pierre.

An old village of character on a rocky outcrop rich in its heritage, a 360 ° panorama where Jean Giono liked to walk. From the car park take the stairs and turn right, cross the bridge and take the road that goes to the right of the cooperative cellar "path under the rock".1 - Before the cemetery turn right on the path of donkey paradise. Arrive at the top on a parking lot take the path on the right.2 - and continue along a small path on the left. At the top, turn right towards "chemin du Baou". Walk under the ramparts in the shade of the holm oaks, until the cross.3 - then turn left to arrive in front of the Gourdanne gate. Pass under this one and go up on the left towards "the walk of the belvedere" to pass in front of the Church to make the turn and to go straight down in the village. Pass the Auberge du Montagnier and cross the Gourdanne door then turn right down to the Cross. 3 - just after turn left and follow the path that descends lace Arrive at the place said the Fountain continue to descend.4 -Take the first path on the right to reach a field on the right, cross a bridge across the D69 and continue facing the path of the old mill, straight and then after 200 m turn right through the municipal camp-site at the end again right to the roundabout continue in front of the grocery store, then the post office and return to the departure bridge.

Climb on this barred spur overlooking the Verdon and the lowland where the local populations of the second iron age had settled. From the car park take the direction of the museum and go up the path to it.1- Go then on the left, pass in front of the hotel Notre-Dame and take just after the Notre Dame road on the right. After 50 m turn left to arrive at the chapel. 2- Leave the main track and continue on the path on the right. Go along a quarry, enter the undergrowth. Continue uphill, sometimes steep, in the middle of some rocky outcrops. Go between the cliff and a rocky tooth and get on the top, on the ridge, the ruins of the Old Quinson.3- Follow the main path on the right. After crossing the plateau to the north, join an open area that expands. After 300 m, get a new flat level.4- Leave the main path and follow the path on the right towards the village of Quinson (yellow markings). Quickly the path crosses the hutch down crossing across the hillside. Get below the intersection with the Lier path.5- Continue down the path for about 400 m On the bottom, leave the path and turn left. Under the oak trees, follow a low wall and join the cemetery. Enter the small road on the right to the village.

This hike allows you to cross the village of Quinson and to discover, on the plateau, the Poiraque source. Departure: Prehistory Museum car park. Follow the white and red markings of the GR®4. From the car park, follow the pedestrian path to reach the Prehistory museum. Enter the village of Quinson by the Esparron de Verdon road.1- Go past the town hall, the wash house and, through the rue du Var, reach the Place de la Paix. At the foot of the ramparts, go up the right street (Cours). Follow him to the end.2- At the fountain, leave the road to Esparron de Verdon and continue to the right in the "Grande Rue". At 90 m, after the fountain turn left, the street "Puits de Ville".3- Climb the small steps to the side of the cellar on your left, cross the main road and go straight, follow the path of Maudevencet (white and red mark-up) about 300 m. 4- Turn left and continue along the Maudevencet valley to the main road.5- Cross it and take in front the trail going towards Poiraque. Climb under the oaks and win the path of the Vaudoudurde valley. Follow the route at the bottom of the valley for 500 m then continue, at the first intersection, by a path and turn left. At the edge of the road the source, Vaudoudurde (20 m to the left of the trail), just in front of a large ruin. Higher up on the path go under the pines, go along some olive trees, before joining the plateau.6- Get the road to cross it and to take the track in front (leave the GR and follow the yellow markings PR), walk the lavandins fields on the right then 400 m further, to join again some vines plants on the left and quickly you will get to a small wooded area. Stay at the edge of the forest. After a hundred meters, the path goes down to the fields continue to the forest on the left.7- Then turn right and join the Poiraque source located just below. 8- The return is made by the same itinerary.

A fun ride that will allow you to journey through time and trace back to the origins of man and prehistory. From the parking lot, head towards the pedestrian access to the Prehistory Museum. Exit the car park, leave the ascent to the village and the museum and turn right on the paved road. It passes between tennis courts and camping grounds and joins the road along the Verdon. 1- For the pedestrians, reach the nautical base and follow, on the left, the dirt road along the Verdon. It leads to, after 500m by the water, the prehistoric village. For people with reduced mobility, stay on the small road that runs along the campsite. At 500m it reaches the entrance of the prehistoric village (the site can be occasionally impassable after heavy precipitation; dirt road!). Return by the same route to the starting point

Taking the emblematic Blanc Martel trail without taking your car couldn't be easier, thanks to the shuttle bus and the Zou 450 regional line (ex BV1 )from Riez, Roumoules, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane. Shuttle service resumes on 28/04/2023. How does it work? The Zou 450 regional line links Riez to Castellane via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the Blanc-Martel shuttle bus takes you to the Chalet de la Maline, the trailhead. The trail ends at Point Sublime (Rougon). For your return journey, take the shuttle bus to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon and/or the regional line 450 to Riez or Castellane. Timetables... To ensure optimum operation, the timetables of the Riez-Castellane regional line (450) and the Blanc-Martel shuttle are coordinated. Online booking is highly recommended if you want to be sure of getting a seat! Please note that the shuttle does not return to Chalet de la Maline in the afternoon.

Observe the yellow, orange and red-hued ochre deposits that give the village its name and its unique charm. Your tour will end with a visit to the medieval village of Gordes. Its buildings are constructed entirely from shale stone, lending the village an enchanting architectural style and a traditional atmosphere.  At the end of the day, you will driven back to Aix en Provence.

The impoundment of Lake Esparron in 1969 drowned the rich agricultural lands of the valley but in return the rise of the waters allowed to redraw the banks leaving sometimes beaches, sometimes steep cliffs, redrawing the landscapes that were transformed into an idyllic place if only by the colour of the water or by creating real small coves.

Located below the castle of Esparron-de-Verdon, the Vière area, historic heart of the village, did not resist the rural exodus and was abandoned by its inhabitants. It is now in ruins, nature has reasserted itself. After rehabilitation, the site is revived and is now accessible, secured and landscaped. This is an area for strolls, between vegetation and ruins, their stones being a remembrance, which offers magnificent views of the village and the lake.

Lake of Esparron, with its 85,000,000m³ has an area of 328ha for a maximum depth of 55m, is used to supply water to a hundred towns of the Var and Bouches du Rhone from Marseille to Toulon. The old canal of the Verdon is visible from the nature trail at the entrance of the gorges. It was built under Napoléon III and provided water supply from the Basse-Provence at that time. A lake in which it is pleasant to bathe in summer.

It was easy to cross Verdon to Esparron, the waters were calmer at the mouth of the lower gorges. A bridge, nowadays submerged by the waters of the lake, was built there in 1725. The village had therefore define an important route between Var and Haute-Provence. Its function itself is specified in its name. The medieval "Espar" is a lock. And what is this town locking? The great path, which of course, it is carefully monitoring at this period.

The viewpoint indicator map located 498m high provides views of the lake and the port of the town of Esparron du Verdon. In the distance, we can see the massif of Luberon and the Lure mountain

The memory of Boniface VI of Castellane, a fierce baron and impetuous troubadour who lived in the 13th century, still hangs over Esparron-de-Verdon, and more particularly in the renowned dungeon of his castle. Because this mighty building with its massive battlements reflects the ardour of Boniface, who challenged the new Count of Provence, Charles of Anjou, whom he called scornfully "franciot" (little Frenchman).

It is the second Mediterranean juniper that immediately differs from its cousin, the Cade, by its innumerable ramules covered with tiny tortoiseshell leaves. Its range is also less extensive. Very xerophile, he likes the poorest scrubland, cracks of rocks and even limestone cliffs where his red brick balls defy the most insane sunshine and aridity almost absolute.

Here the small road seems to flow into the lake. It has not always been the case. In 1967, the water filling of the lake submerged on12m a stone bridge with three arches spanning the Verdon that connected "Le Quartier” to the rest of the town of Esparron. Passing between the Var and the Alpes de Haute Provence. The bridge built in 1725 by the town council of Arles was a passageway for sheep transhumance between La Crau and the Pre-Alps pastures thus avoiding the unpredictable Verdon.

If you are careful the path is a true archaeological treasure, indeed there is a paved path, medieval for some, Roman for others, it is true that here the Verdon valley has served as a place of passage from time immemorial for but also for transhumance herds between Crau and the Prealps pastures. In 1725 the town of Arles built a bridge a little further upstream avoiding the vagaries of the Verdon in 1967 the launch of the lake has submerged it.

You will see the oldest part of the medieval village of Esparron nestled against its castle and its protective dungeon.
