Camping le Font du Merle: Discoveries and Adventures

At Allemagne-en-Provence, follow the trail of a past rich in knightly history! From the Place du 16 Juin 1944 (square), at the foot of the castle of Allemagne, follow the D952 towards Riez. Immediately after the bridge of the Tartavel valley, take the small path on the right, marked in yellow. 1- Go up by the footpath, under the oaks, amidst the thyme, boxwood and broom. Halfway up, pass at the foot of a column and continue in the woods until the chapel (equipped picnic area). 2- From the top, go back down through Allemagne-en-Provence by a wider path behind the chapel until the Route de Riez. The end of the trail follows the D952 for 500m (watch out for cars, walk to the right of the road!). Go past the old mill village, now converted into a hotel and restaurant. Reach the car park of the starting point.

A nice circuit, amid the scents from lavender, almond and olive groves to reach the chapel of the Trinity. When leaving the car park, turn left, then at the intersection, turn right. At 100m, leave the route de Manosque and follow the paved road of Riou on the left until reaching the exit of the residential area. At 800m after the olive groves, facing a barn, leave the road to go down to the right to the forge valley. 1 - At a small road, at the bottom of the valley, continue straight for 200m. 2 - Turn right and continue straight for about 250m to the picnic area of Holy Trinity. To the right of the source, hidden under the trees, sits the chapel of the seventeenth century. To go back to Valensole, return to point (2) and follow the paved uphill to the left along the farm of Bellencroupe. 3 - At the plateau, turn left. The small road winds among fields of lavender for 2km to the barn of of the starting area. Go into Valensole via the same route used to go.

After strolling through the narrow streets of this typical village of Haute Provence, discover the landscapes and views of the dam and the Verdon valley. From the village square follow the GR®4 (red and white markings) up the alleys to the clock tower. Exit the village to the west and pass a small bridge. 1- Leave the road in a left turn to continue straight ahead past the campsite and follow the stone road which climbs quickly in the pines towards the plateau. 2- Leave the road on the left and continue straight on the GR®4 and follow the direction Gréoux-les-Bains. 3- Turn left the GR® and cross old fields of lavender then continue in the forest. At the first crossroad, turn left. At the second, with a very large pine tree, turn right. Finally on the third, go left (south-west) towards Gréoux-les-Bains and the Verdon. 4- At the edge of the road, turn left, due south and left again until the D952. Cross it and go down to Verdon. 5- Follow the Verdon on the left for 650m, then at the post arrow follow the path on the left until the D952. Cross it then turn right and continue for 350m until the next post pole. 6- Get to the left and climb towards Buffe Arnaud. 7- At the post pole "Buffe Arnaud", continue straight on towards St-Martin-de-Brômes and follow the ridge to point 2. Then take a right and return by the same way to the starting point.

Path making... A bicycle from one shed to another From Riez, take a small communal road and climb up the plateau; the climb is arduous but promises a striking view of the Verdon mountains. Find a trail that is at first brittle and steep and increasingly rolling. Travel between truffle and lavender to the village of Puimoisson. Go down the plateau by the Moustiers road, between rolling trails and small secondary roads, then follow the Colostre (ford, potentially flooded, caution! possibility of variant while staying on the road) in the direction of Roumoules. Exit Roumoules by the GR4 and, after a few hundred meters, climb up the plateau via a steep and stony path (bifurcation loop 2). Amore accessible variant takes you through the trading estate. There is a straight and rolling trail completely open on the fields of lavender and olive trees that join the chapel of Sainte-Maxime. Take a last stony descent (variant possible by road) until the heart of the picturesque lanes of Riez.

A family walk to discover Riez. At the top of the Saint-Maxime hill you will join after a small climb, the chapel overlooking the village. From the Pré de foire car park, cross the Colostre. 1- Go left to cross the square in direction of the church, to circumvent it by the left. Follow the road towards St-Maxime. After the wash house and the fountain, walk up the Faubourg St-Sébastien for 150 meters. 2- Turn right on the small road to St-Maxime (white and red signposting) .After a crossroads, continue ahead. Go up to the plateau by a small road (passage in front of the cemetery). Pass the Sainte Maxime source. 3- On the last part leave the road and turn right on a small path (yellow markers) to join the St-Maxime chapel. Pass in front of the chapel (point of water nearby) and cross the plateau. 4- 4- The descent on Riez is done by a path. At the foot of the hill, walk along the clock tower, down the stairs on the right, cross a small road and continue in front. After a few steps, the alley joins the Riez wash house. The return to the car park is done by the same route as the outward journey.

The short walk of the "Roman columns" will lead you to the columns, isolated in the middle of their meadow. From the car park turn left.1- Cross the bridge then follow the path along the Colostre on the left bank (GR®4 towards Greoux les Bains). 2- At 200 m, take the bridge to reach the other bank and the 4 Roman columns. Possibility to continue the walk along the Colostre, flat and shaded path, by going up to the health course for about 200 m. The return is made by the same itinerary.

Choose a family walk in the lavender fields and in the middle of the olive tree fields, two crops that testify of the glorious past of the agricultural city of Riez. From the hiking panels, at the car park of Pré-de-Foire, reach the Silo de Riez. Take the small road along the Colostre and go around the high school. 1 - At the H. Bourret Boulevard, turn left and reach the Sainte-Croix road. Cross it. 2 - At the police station, go to the right towards the Silo. 3 - On the Revesca path, turn right and head to Millarettes, then right again at the next intersection. Cross the departmental road D11 and go up the paved road across for 1.2km / less than a mile. 4 - Go up the road until the Millarettes plateau. At the ledge, take the second road on the right. Continue on the dirt road in the middle of the lavender plantations and the downy oaks for 1.6km / less than a mile. 5 - At the crossing of 3 paths, take the right trail in switchbacks, go down the valley of the Tailla through the oak trees. At the bottom of the valley, turn right. Go up the gravel path gradually until the road (point 4 -). Come back to Riez via the same route used to go.

A Esparron de Verdon, between the lake and hills, discover the history of the village, its castle and the local flora. From the car park of the tourist office, get on the D82 road and turn right towards the castle and its fountain. Reach on 100m the intersection to the right between the roads of the Tuilière and Quinson. 1- Take the right route (Lake Road and Tuilière Road). After 50m on the path of Tuilière, turn left by the discovery trail. The entire climb, on a trail, is common with this special course. Pass in front of the viewpoint of the Tuilière. Cross a small valley and reach, to the top, a crossroads of tracks at a place known as Séouve. 2 - Exit the discovery trail and turn left leaving the track towards Sainte-Magdeleine. Cross the plateau on about 800m. After coming out of the forest, along the fields, go past a small stone cottage and reach the intersection with the Quinson path. 3 - Take a sharp left and go down the path through the hill. Once on the road, follow it to the left for 150m and take the path starting on the right. Go down for another 400m and reach the intersection with the access track to Bastide Neuve. Continue across on the main track and reach the road at 200m. 4 - Turn left and go through it to the village. At about 700m, go past the Sainte-Magdeleine chapel. Continue to the intersection with the Quinson road. Follow the signs towards Esparron to reach the castle and the route taken to go.

I love this rich and pleasant stroll throughout the year taking advantage of the landscapes especially in spring with the maximum flowering. From the car park of the tourist office, get on the D82 road and turn right towards the castle and its fountain. Turn right in 100m at the intersection between the roads of La Tuilière and Quinson. 1- Take the right route (Lake Road and Tuilière Road). After 50m on the Chemin de Tuilière, turn left onto the GR discovery trail (red and white markings). The entire climb, on a trail, is common with this special course. Pass in front of the viewpoint of the Tuilière. Cross a small valley and reach, to the top, a crossroads of tracks at a place known as Séouve. 2- At the crossroad turn right (yellow signs) and follow "pont coupé 1.5km" 3- Leave the trail that leads to the relay and take the path on the left, follow the trail. (Careful, the descent to the lake is a bit abrupt!) 4- At the bottom of the road turn right and join the paved road Chemin de Tuiliére, follow it to point 1. Continue on the same route as before.

Exploring the Coteau Chiron along the Saint Laurent lake and a part of the lower gorges. From the car park, exit the village through the road Montagnac-Montpezat on the right. When you reach the oratory of Saint-Laurent, at a crossroads between the Riez road and the Montpezatof road, continue straight on the small road C1 of Montpezat. 400m further, just before the bridge, leave the road and follow the path on the right. Go downwards at the edge of the field until the ruins of Angles. 1 - Take the trail on the right and 200m further, go down the road on the left. Coming out a passageway through the woods, reach to a vast mountain pass at the edge of the field (420m). Turn left. Go down the path along the meadows until lake Saint-Laurent. 2 - Upstream the lake, take the left path. Further down, go into the woods. Continue on the main route. The trail rises quickly on the left, upstream the gorges of Verdon, on the hillside of Coteau Chiron (look out for the marking!). When the view opens onto lake Montpezat, follow the trail that descends to the Verdon. Reach to the fencing of the camp (intersection of routes between Saint-Laurent and Montpezat). 3 - Follow the road on the left towards Saint-Laurent. Reach the edges of the forest, and after a short ascent, go to the ruins of Angles. 1 - Turn right and return to the village following the route taken to go.

Taking the emblematic Blanc Martel trail without taking your car couldn't be easier, thanks to the shuttle bus and the Zou 450 regional line (ex BV1 )from Riez, Roumoules, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane. Shuttle service resumes on 28/04/2023. How does it work? The Zou 450 regional line links Riez to Castellane via the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon. From La Palud-sur-Verdon, the Blanc-Martel shuttle bus takes you to the Chalet de la Maline, the trailhead. The trail ends at Point Sublime (Rougon). For your return journey, take the shuttle bus to the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon and/or the regional line 450 to Riez or Castellane. Timetables... To ensure optimum operation, the timetables of the Riez-Castellane regional line (450) and the Blanc-Martel shuttle are coordinated. Online booking is highly recommended if you want to be sure of getting a seat! Please note that the shuttle does not return to Chalet de la Maline in the afternoon.

Since 1922, our mill extracts extra virgin olive oil, a genuine fruit juice, only with mechanical means to olive oil amateurs’ great joy. For more than 40 years we have been making cosmetics and soap made in a cauldron just like Marseille soap. The harvest of olives is done manually with hand and automatic combs to preserve olives quality. Then, we proceed to the grinding of the fruit with a simple mechanical method, without the addition of chemicals or change in temperature. At the end of the grinding, we get an extra virgin olive oil with a free acidity lower than 0.8%. Our mill produces a local extra virgin olive oil. Our olive oil is peppery and refreshing which is specific to the aglandau olives (90%). Nearly 400 olive growers bring their olives to supply you with: - Green fruity olive oil - Local olive oil All our products are available at our shop and online shop: olive oil, homemade products, Marseille soaps… We also make basil, mint and lemon oils. Olive oil sold at the Serres, Orpierre, Sisteron and Laragne tourist offices. We offer visits of our soap factory from April to September by prior arrangement.

Mark, evangelist, is celebrated on April 25 in the liturgical calendar. But throughout France, Saint-Marc is above all, revered for the protection of the crops and fruits, especially of the vine. This protection sometimes extends to transhumant herds. In Allemagne-en-Provence, an old tradition has made Saint-Marc the protector of all the agricultural activity and the patron saint of the village.

The parish church of Allemagne-en-Provence, is composed of several building parts, some relatively recent. In the course of its history, this building has undergone several rearrangements and enlargements. Its eastern part and the overhanging wall of the Romanesque tradition constitute an architectural complex that is particularly interesting, as aesthetic as it is rare, which must be protected and promoted.

A tombstone recalls the memory of Nicholas of Castellane, Baron of Germany and the date of his death: 5 September 1586. It was on that day that an important battle of the religious wars which took place in the valley dominated by the chapel. Catholics and Protestants clashed in a fight in which -it is said- several hundred men were killed. While the Catholic troops were retreating, Nicolas de Castellane, leader of the Protestants, accidentally died.

Another small miracle of nature of the wooded and yet sunny path of the chapel of Saint-Marcla – the small flower of a blooming orchid: ophrys bouc The Orchis bouc (Himantoglossum hircinum) is characteristic by its smell ... that gave it its name.

The name of Allemagne-en-Provence is surprising. Its origin remains obscure. Until the beginning of the last century, in a wish to privilege a Latin origin, this toponym was explained by the expression "area magna": The large areas. It is more likely that the village derives its name from the Germanic people of the Alamans, some of whom may have settled in the valley in a remote period. Then, the name of the village was modified after the war of 1945 by adding "in Provence".

Set in the middle of the Colostre valley, the castle of Germany looks great. It is one of the few Renaissance castles in the area. The highest square dungeon is the oldest part of the complex. It may date from the 12th or 13th century, when the fief of Germany belonged to the family of Castellane, one of the most powerful families of Haute Provence.

This river has marked its history. In Roman times, the Colostre was an important axis of development. Later, the inhabitants of the valley domesticated it and used it for agricultural purposes. A network of canals ran through the valley. The water intakes are still visible. They cultivated tulip, beans or mulberry trees. Shepherds let their sheep to graze on the banks. Today, the Colostre is identified as a major biological reservoir to restore and preserve.

You will see the oldest part of the medieval village of Esparron nestled against its castle and its protective dungeon.

The parish church of Saint-Martin is a former priory of the abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille it has received from the hands of the brothers Gontard and Hughes in 1042. The term "ecclesiam" mentioned in the act can also mean a territory. This transaction confirms that Saint-Martin was at that time a monastic domain and no longer a seigniorial one. An Act of 13 March 1343 mentioned the exchange between Saint-Victor and Boniface de Castellane, allowing him to recover the land of Saint-Martin.

The tower was built in the 14th century on the initiative of Boniface de Castellane, the Lord at that time. It is now recognized as the most beautiful military building work of Haute-Provence. Its military aspect is clear, but its function seems less defensive. It could be used to store the seigniorial tax (in the form of food). We can speak of "dungeon" marking conspicuously the power of the Lord. At the top, the machicolations allowed to defend itself if attacked.
