This hike unfolds in the heart of the High Combes, the highest plateaux of the Jura mountain range, which were once entirely covered by forest. From LAJOUX, the trail cuts through the village towards Mijoux (white and red waymarking), heading past the front of the Maison du Parc. At Route Royale, the road ascends steeply and reaches a pasture (MTB path). The path continues pleasantly until it reaches Trécombe. Branch off to your left (yellow waymarking) on a forest path that is rocky, muddy and hilly. Exit through the pasture and descend the combe to the left on a grassy path. Continue on this path, leaving the intersection at La Pièce du Châtelain to your right and heading to Le Petit Pré (white and red waymarking). The grassy and later stony path (yellow waymarking) descends to your left, and heads past the farms in Sur la Joux before coming to “route du Massacre”. Follow the road to your left for 50 m before joining up with Route Royale and LAJOUX via the path just under the road.

This family hike designed and illustrated by the children from the Lajoux school (year 5/year 6) takes you on a discovery of the Crêt de la Vigoureuse viewpoint, through forests, wooded meadows and pastures. From LAJOUX () follow the village road towards La Fromagerie (white and red waymarking) and then Route sur les Champs.Turn right and follow the road that heads past Sous les Champs and heads uphill, bordered by a few houses and old farms (yellow waymarking). Continue on the path in the same direction bordered by low stone walls through the pastures. The path heads into a first forest (MTB crossing to your left) and exits at the Combe du Sous (MTB crossing) after a short ascent. Head past two houses on either side of the path, Chez Gauthon, and continue into the combe to head up to Sous la Vigoureuse (MTB crossing).Turn left (chicane to cross the fence) up the forest path for around 200 metres. A steeper trail to your left will take you past a fence and into a wooded meadow, before finally coming to the CRET DE LA VIGOUREUSE. From the summit, head back down via the narrow and steep trail to the Bois de la Vigoureuse. Turn left and follow the stony path through the woods, descending to the Combe du Sous and Chez Gauthon.To head back to LAJOUX, take the same path to your right.

Take a road (cycling path) to Sermangindre (chalet). Cross a second cycling path to follow the trail parallel to the road, across several pastures until your reach La Pièce d’Aval. Head up the road to the left (yellow waymarking) for 300 m then take the “chemin de la Combe du Sous” to your left. Head past La Balise d’Amont before coming to Sous la Vigoureuse. The forest trail ascends to the right into the clearing of the CRET DE LA VIGOUREUSE. The hilly trail descends once more to your right towards Lamoura, to reach the Forest of the Vigoureuse. The stony and muddy path branches off to the left to reach the combe and the houses in Chez Gauton. The path heads right and descends back towards the village of Lajoux via Route Sur les Champs. Return to your starting point (red and white waymarking) in LAJOUX via the road to your left.

Continue on this path through a small woods (MTB path) that then joins up with the Route Sur le Champs. Return to your starting point in LAJOUX via the road to your left.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. Notice the two small depressions in the middle of the field to your right. These circular depressions, which are usually larger than they are deep, are sinkholes. They expose the karstic soil below due to a dissolution of the rock underneath. They are created by fractures in the limestone, which become larger due to dissolution and drainage. They are often found in places where limestone has fallen victim to significant cracking, along fault lines and anticline summits, as is the case here.

If not for this cow, with a beautiful white and red-speckled coat, these landscapes would not be what they are: vast spaces devoted to pastures, scattered here and there with farms, long dry-stone walls and spinneys. Without this cow, the cheese would not be as famous as it is either! Their milk alone allows for the local production of protected designation of origin cheeses such as comté, the bleu de Gex and morbier.

Cows eat grass but grass alone isn’t enough. To produce milk, they need to have a calf. During the day, they graze. Mornings and evenings are spent in the milking parlour. At night, the lorry from the cheese dairy picks up the milk from several farms. Early in the morning, cheesemakers curdle the milk by heating it and adding calf rennet (from the calf’s stomach) to produce Comté. The Comté’s flavour is determined by the quality of the grass. The Maison du Parc, which serves as head office for the High-Jura Regional Natural Park, has remarkable architecture and shingled facades. It offers visitors a chance to discover the region through exhibits, projections and a tour of a “Grenier-fort” (a strong attic). The exhibit takes visitors through each of the aspects of the High-Jura, in a colourful, modern and interactive setting: landscapes, nature, craftsmanship and industries, tourism, agriculture and forestry. An acoustic stroll offers an unexpected, poetic and vivid opportunity to submerge oneself into nature in the High-Jura through its exceptional sounds. Finally, two remarkable and recent films on landscapes complete and illustrate the visit: one on the geology of the Jura massif and the other on peat bogs.

The prairies stretching out before you are one of the High-Jura’s treasures. Here, hayfields contain a wide range of plants. Never laboured or sown, most prairies in the region are natural.

The Haute-Joux conquest started here in the 5th century. During the 15th century, a type of serfdom imposed by the very powerful Saint-Claude abbey forced families to stay under the same roof: this was called mortmain. In a certain way, mortmain was the start of craftsmanship at home, as to leave for work in the city was to risk losing family property.

Let’s discover local wildlife with a few clues. If you come across small round droppings, you’ll know a hare has been here. Hares are herbivores and they take up shelter in burrows. You will know if a fox is around by its tracks, which are almost identical to a dog’s pawprint. However, the fox’s digits are spread out much wider and it walks in straight lines. If you want to know whether there are any squirrels in the area, look at the spruce cones on the ground to see if they have been nibbled on or not. Ellyne, Morgane and Néo .

From this little roof above the Jura region, you can admire the High-Jura mountain range, Bellecombe and its large grazing areas. From east to south, you can see the Montrond, the Colomby de Gex and its twin, the Crêt de la Neige, and lastly the pyramid of the Reculet. Following the line of les Plâtières, to the south-west, the triangle made by the Crêt de Chalam is unmissable.

Typical of these environments, the great yellow gentian will be by your side every step of this hike. A fun fact: if you squash the gentian’s fruit between your fingers, do you recognise the smell? It smells of peas.

To the left of your path, you will see a “grenier fort”, or a strong attic, set back from the main house. What is in there today, no one knows. But do feel free to visit the strong attic of the Maison du Parc in Lajoux. The keys alone are worth the detour!
